THE ANCESTORS OF
CARRIE SWENSGARD-PARLER
Generations 1-10

FIRST GENERATION

1. Carrie SWENSGARD was born on 18 Dec 1903 in Overly, Rolette County, North
Dakota. She was baptized on 8 May 1904 in Lutheran Church, North Dakota. She died
on 12 Jun 1961 in Santa Cruz, California. She was buried on 14 Jun 1961 in Golden Gate
National Cemetery, San Bruno, California. When Carrie was about 15 her father had a
accident on the farm and could no longer work. The bank foreclosed on the family farm.
The family had to be divided and she went to Florida to live with an older, married sister.
She met Dan PARLER there and they got married. The first two children were born in
Tampa, Fla., before the family moved to N.Y.C. about 1929, along with her in-laws. She
had no trouble getting a job during the depression as she was pretty, and a hard worker.
Carrie was a beautiful person, in appearance and heart. She had naturally curly auburn hair,
that she modeled in her younger days in N.Y.C. She loved to dance and was in a Charleston
contest when she was in her last month of pregnancy, with her first child (she did not show).
She had the chance to become a ballroom dancer, but her husband did not approve. She
was liked by everyone and refused to give in to any illness. When her children were very
young she had a broken arm, and carried on. She had her tonsils out about 1944 in the
doctor's office, and went right down to her own apartment after. About 1947 she had a
bad case of the mumps, on both sides, and her younger daughter, "Midgie", had to sneak
and call the doctor, as she was about to go to work. She worked hard all her life at various
jobs, and in a defense factory during W.W.II. She was the most Christian person you could
meet, although she did not go to church. She was strict and managed to instill excellent
values in her children. She developed Cancer in 1960, and was hospitalized with little hope.
All her children came to Calif. (Clifford lived there also) to stay at Mary Ann's house and
"Midgie" brought her two children. After seven weeks when "Midgie" had to return home
to Canada, the job of caretaker fell on Mary Ann's shoulders.

SECOND GENERATION

2. Tollef A. SWENSGAARD born on 6 Sep.1861 in Hol Par., Buskerud, Hallindal, Norway.
He died on 5 Apr 1928 in Cecil, Bottineau Co., North Dakota. He was buried in Memorial
Park Cemetery, Willow City, North Dakota. They farmed near Overly, North Dakota.
Tollef bought horses from his neighbor, when his neighbor was unsuccessful breaking them
to harness. When the neighbor saw Tollef had the horses in harness pulling a harrow/drag
he became furious and fired his rifle to scare the horses. The horses bolted and Tollef was
knocked down and the harrow was dragged over him. The neighbor then felt real bad,
loaded Tollef into his wagon and drove Tollef to Willow City to a doctor. With the horses
running at full speed it is a wonder the ride to town did not kill him. Unable to work after
that the bank foreclosed on the family farm in the early 20's. The family moved to some
vacant farm buildings near Overly and got by with the help of relatives and friends and
welfare, etc. Some of the children went to live with relatives or married siblings. In 1928
word was sent to his sister, Kari OLSON that Tollef was dying or had died so Kari and her
son, Roy went with horses and a bob sleigh as the roads were still not open. They stayed
overnight, making arrangements for the funeral. Anne moved to Minot and lived there

in Memorial Park Cemetery, Willow City, North Dakota. They had ten children. Serena's
family is believed to have settled in Saskatchewan, Canada.
The SWENSGARD farm was about 1 1/2 miles south of the OLSON farm and the younger
children went to the country school together, which started in 1910, so the older children
were self taught. The SWENSGARD children had about two miles to walk to school.
The school term was from April to early Dec. Serena would go to the OLSON farm to
assist the doctor with the birth of the OLSON children.

THIRD GENERATION

4. Anders Tollefson SWENSGAARD was born on 29 Jan 1836 in Myren, Norway. He
died on 6 Jul 1911 in Wellington, Bottineau County, North Dakota. He was buried in Memorial
Park Cemetery, Willow City, North Dakota. His father gave Andres the family farm and he
was the owner until he sold it in 1885 and bought the Haugen Farm from Thuri's brother, Asle.
Very much in debt the farm was sold at auction July 30,1887 after which they emigrated to
America with three of their four children.
Over one hundred years ago, in 1875, large eastern corporations rolled into the vast plains
of the Dakotas. The Indian problem was pretty much under control by that time and the
level, fertile plains were ripe for the white man's plow.
These corporations had the money for machinery, seed and labor and the land was there for
the grabbing. These corporation farms ran from 3,000 to 65.000 acres and grew only one
crop, wheat. So much money was made from this growing gold that they were called "Bonaza
Farms". Lured to the Dakotas by the reports of large profits in grain production, settlers
began arriving in the late 1880's. They came from states east and south and from Norway,
Russia, Germany and Canada. It was at that time that Thuri and Anders arrived in America.
From the eastern seaboard they moved west stopping with Norwegian friends and relatives
in Minnesota and Iowa. These Norwegians had preceded them to the "New World" and
were probably happy to give the newcomers a few weeks rest, English lessons and advice in
exchange for news of those they had left behind. Knowing that Thuri and eleven year old
Carrie would be well taken care of, Anders and his sons, Tollef and Elling continued on to
the north central plains of North Dakota. Here at Willow City they filed on a homestead
and began "proving up". Getting the seed into the ground was probably their first priority
followed by some sort of shelter for the family. After these two important tasks were
completed, Thuri and Carrie could be sent for. The family was not complete however,
until Julia, 24, who had remained behind in Norway, joined them. Julia arrived weakened
by the effects of diphtheria which had killed three of the family that had given her shelter
in Minnesota. With the family intact they began the long, arduous task of making a home
for themselves in strange surroundings.
He was married to Thuri ELLINGSDATTER before 1861 in Hol, Hallingdal, Sukun, Norway.
5. Thuri ELLINGSDATTER was born on 14 Jun 1832 in Sukun, Hol, Hallingdal, Norway.

and came to America in 1887. They lived in Wallingford and Estherville, Iowa and in 1888
homesteaded in Wellington Township, Bottineau Co., North Dakota. After their death the
homestead was purchased by Tom and Guro HERMANSEN. Lloyd OLSON purchased the
farm and lived there until the 1980's when he moved to Willow City where he and his wife,
Anna, built a new home in 1985. The SWENSGARD farm is listed as a centennial farm as
it has been in the family for over one hundred years.
