Letter from Kathy

Hi, John.

I'm fine, though like everyone, still a little shook up.

On Tuesday morning I made it to my office via the 2-3 line that ran right under the World Trade Center, oblivious to what was happening.

When I came above ground the sidewalks were filled with people and from 6th Avenue we could see black smoke billowing from the still standing WTC.

It was horrifying. Was watching coverage on television from my boss's office when the first tower collapsed -- then looked out the window and saw it in real life. Felt this visceral horror, anger, and sadness, stunned by the magnitude of the violence.

Decided to hoof it home since all the bridges and tunnels were closed and subways not running by then.

Fighter jets were roaring overhead and the smoke billowed from the site all afternoon.

A sea of us streamed across the Manhattan Bridge.

Took me over 2 hours to get home, fearful another shoe might drop, but felt much safer being in Brooklyn than on the targeted island.

In the days since, New Yorkers have been generous and the mayor has had perfect pitch. There are flags everywhere.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Will be in touch.

Kathy
