The L. B. Parrent who served in Co. A, 3rd KY Mounted Infantry, CSA
is the same man as Linn Boyd/Lynn Boyd Parrent who moved to MO?

The same roster also lists a "Lane Parent", a "Lane or Lene. Parrent"
and a "Lewis Parrent". They are all the same man, L. B., just confused
by the transcriber.

There appear to be several Lyon County men serving in this unit.

Hello again John.

I see on your website that Henry Wilson Parrent was born 1876 in
Hopkins County, KY.

That is of interest to me as I find that in the 1880 census Perry
M. Parrrent (Lynn Boyd's half-brother), John L. McCracken (whose
deceased wife, Cynthia A. (Parrent), was Lynn Boyd's sister who had
died Oct 1878 in Lyon County),
and
John P. Devers, whose deceased wife was Charlotte Parrent, another
of Lynn Boyd's sisters, were all living near each other in Hopkins
County.

I don't know when John L. McCracken moved to Dunklin Co., MO but he
was there by April 1883 when he consented to the marriage of his
daughter Cynthia E. McCracken.

I know from Lyon County tax records that Lynn Boyd was a resident in
the county through 1874. Do you know when he moved to Hopkins County,
and then to MO? Also, do you have any idea of why these related
families moved to Hopkins?

Pat

John,

I've placed tax data I extracted from various county tax lists
on my Lyon and Caldwell pages (same data on each page). Feel free to
place a link to it if you wish. Hopefully others will find it useful
in seeing the migration patterns.

I included Calloway because Nancy (Conway) Parent moved there to live
with her daughter's family (John and Catherine Parent Holland) ca
1835. The area where they lived later became Marshall County. I have
no way of knowing if the Parrent/Parrant man found there is related
to David.

The family and descendents of David's daughter Sally/Sarah who
married Edward Jenkins in 1818 Caldwell County and then almost
immediately moved to AL and later to TX is very well documented in a
book "Recollections of Early Texas: The Memoirs of John Holland
Jenkins". Edward Jenkins was killed and scalped 1832 in Bastrop
County, Texas. Sally married again and her second husband was killed
at the Alamo. John Holland Jenkins was a son of Sarah and Edward
Jenkins.

Hi Pat

Thanks for the info and the links

They must have gone to Hopkins Co for work. I've often wondered myself.

The following article will give you the rest of the info re: L. B. in
MO--or at least as much as I can claim to know:

Lynn Boyd Parent, md. Julia Gillis, Oct. 23, 1867, Caldwell Co., Ky.,
witness--J. L. McCracken (son of Elizabeth. Sometimes called J.L.
Parent)

1870 Fed. Cen. Lyon Co., Ky.
L. B. Parant 28 Farmer b. Ky.
July 25 Wife Ky.
J. R. 2 Ky.
George W. 8/12 Ky.

1880 Fed. Cen. Freeborn Township, Dunklin Co., Missouri
So he was in Dunklin before 1880.
[However, either he himself, or the census taker, supplied some very
false information]
Lynn B. Parent 31 b. Tenn. Fath. b. N. C., Moth. b. N. C.
Julia 26 Ky. Ky. N. C.
James R. 10 Ky. Ky. N. C.
George W. 9 Ky. Tenn. N. C.
Ellen (G.) 8
Horace 5
[someone claims that Horace was a Lankford, son of L.B.'s 2nd wife,
but he didn't marry her until 1886, so this idea must be discounted]
Henry 4
Carrie 3

Notes:
If Callie was also born in KY, then they went to Dunklin Co between 1877
and 1879/80.

Thanks for the data.

With your help (above) I finally located Lynn B. in the microfilmed
1880 Freeborn Census. Attached are the actual census images in case
you don't have them. They appear to be the same as the transcription.
I also have the 1850, 60 and 1870 Lyon Census images for your records
if you want them.

L. B. was an honorably discharged Confederate soldier. He returned
to Lyon County after the war, married there and continued to live
near and associate with other Confederate soldiers (including his
brother-in-law John L. McCracken).

I'll seek out and send you the URLs for L. B.'s service records in case
you don't have them. Just disregard if you already have them.

I have the transcripts that I sent you and the images and URLs, and
am grateful for this and anything else that will help fill out his
biography.

I didn't realize I had a page re: L.B. and the censuses as well as CW
info. You can find it as one of the links under the index heading.

I have all the censuses but not all the info. No info on 1850 where
anyone was born. Also the censuses are consistent that L.B. was born
in Tenn regardless of the other erroneous info. Elizabeth was also
from Tenn. Why and when was Wilson in Tenn? This raises unanswered
questions for me.

Do you have complete 1850 info?

John
-------------

John,

I have photo images of the 1850 data entries which I'll forward to you.

Pat
-------------

John,

Here are images of the actual 1850 Caldwell Federal Census entries
for Wilson Parent and Elizabeth McCracken. Note that Wilson
gave the birthplace of all his children as Kentucky.

The Lucretia Conway living next door to Wilson was the widow of
Valentine Conway, brother of Wilson Parent's mother, Nancy (Conway)
Parent. I have documented Valentine's family, with the help of a
descendent of his.

In answer to one of your earlier questions: I do have access to the
1900 FC images (all states) but the only indexed one I have is Lyon
County, KY. Searching the images without index info is too difficult.

I will attach images of the 1860 Lyon County Wilson Parent entry and
the 1870 Lyon County L. B. "Parant" entry to another message. Both
give Lynn Boyd's birthplace as KY, not TN.

Pat

Thank you very much. Especially for the clarifications. I honestly
don't remember if I got my census inmfo from a tape or from a printed
source, it was so many years ago. So I can rest in the assurance that
all the KY cenuses were in agreement. However, there remains the
mysteryof the disparate info in MO in 1880. But just as there are
people today who assume the role of authority about people they
scarcely know so may there have been someone then, and not L.B., who
gave out this erroneous info.

I guess I assumed the available records would be in Soundex form for
1900FC, but thanks for all your help so far!

I have already made some modifications on my website. I haven't posted
your links yet.

Hello John,

You're quite right about the Soundex for the microfilmed 1900 census.
Unfortunately, while I have internet access to images of all 1900
census pages, arranged by state and county, there is currently no
on-line index, Soundex or other. My local library does have some few
1900 MO counties on microfilm but Dunklin is not among them. But the
Soundex is available for those counties in their holdings.

Did L. B.'s descendents live in other MO counties?

Your idea that someone other than L. B. might have given the census
taker incorrect info is certainly plausible, in fact, I've seen similar
instances before. It is entirely possible that L. B. was away from home
at work the day the census taker came to the house and that his wife
provided the incorrect information, probably in all innocence, since
she may not have actually known where he was born. It is well known
that this sort of thing occasionally happened.

I'm descended from John L. McCracken (son of Elizabeth and ??) who
married Cynthia A. Parent (dau of Wilson and Cynthia Aurelia
(Galusha) Parent) 19 June 1862 in Lyon County, KY.

John L. and Cynthia A. had four children:
Cynthia Elizabeth,
Willis Machen,
David W.
and an unnamed son born and died Oct 1878.

Cynthia A. died in childbirth Oct 1878 Lyon County. (The birth/death
dates for the child and the death date for Cynthia are from Lyon County
Vital Statistics - Births and Deaths, microfilm.)

After Cynthia A. died, John L. married a young woman named Mollie
(where? when?) and moved to Hopkins County, KY where he and his
family were living in 1880 at Fisher's Springs.

Also living at Fisher's Springs were John P. Devers and children and
Perry M. Parent and wife.

John P. Devers was married to L. B.'s sister Charlotte. Charlotte was
not listed in the 1880 census and I believe she had died.

Perry M. Parent was the oldest child of Wilson Parent and his second
wife Elizabeth McCracken. I have no additional information on either
Perry M. Parrent or John P. Devers.

In April 1883, in Dunklin County, MO, John L. McCracken gave
permission for his daughter Cynthia McCracken to marry Harry Ross.

I have no later info on John L. McCracken though I'm confident he
remained in the area for a few years as his sons Willis Machen
McCracken and David W. McCracken were both married in Dunklin and
were listed in the 1900 Dunklin Census. I have never located Harry
and Cynthia E. Ross after their marriage.

In the 1900 Dunklin County Census, David W. McCracken and wife were
listed. In their household was an Albert L. McCracken, age 12, shown
as "brother". I can only assume that Albert L. was a son of John L.
by a second (or third) wife. I have no further information on Albert.
David W, died in Dunklin Co. in 1902 and is buried there.

Willis Machen McCracken was married to Eudora Gowen 22 April 1893 in
Dunklin. They had three sons but only one, Chester Roland McCracken,
MY GRANDFATHER, survived childhood. Eudora (Gowen) McCracken died in
1898 in Dunklin County. In about 1908, Willis Machen took his son
Chester back to Lyon County, KY to live. Shortly after that Willis
Machen died at the home, I'm told, of his sister--

Gustava (Aunt Gus) (McCracken) Parent, widow of George W. Parent.--

Willis M. is buried at Saratoga Methodist Church in Lyon County.

My mother was the oldest daughter of Chester R. McCracken.

John,

I thought you might be interested in seeing that John P. Dever's family
in 1880 included sons John L. and Lynn M. John P. Devers and Charlotte
W. Parrent were married 7/16/1857 Lyon County "at her father's house,
Sure: Wilson Parrent, wit: Harrison Coffer, & Geo. Henson"

It's interesting to me that Charlotte and John P. Dever(s) named their
older sons John L. and Lynn, the same names as Charlotte's
step-brother and brother.

Go to Click and search on Devers, John and you'll see something interesting.

NOTE: I went to the site and did this and found a John W. Devers
in both armies in Kentucky. Is this what we were supposed to see?
