I found this mailing list while browsing Cindislist.com. My Pettit's all lived in NY. The oldest ancestor so far was Abner Pettit, b 1821 in Saratoga, NY. He married Sophronia Weeden and they had 9 children. He died 2/13/1878 in Ashford, NY. I am looking for any of his siblings or ancestors.

I am searching for Mary R. Pettit, born 27 July 1839 Ohio, and married John Wesley Hemsworth 13 Feb 1861 Columbiana Ohio. After the Civil War, they lived in Howard County and Livingston County Missouri, moving to Oregon about 1890. Mary's middle initial may have been Riley as a son and a granddaughter were given Riley as a middle name.

Thank you,
Bonnie

Henry Isaac Kelley(Kelly) was born in 1801 in Surry Co NC and died December 26, 1890 near Yadkin co NC. He married Sarah Pettitt in 1839. Children of Samuel and Sarah was Nancy P, Rachel E, Rebecca, Samuel H, Sarah A, Jesse and Wilson. Supposedly Samuel and Henry fought on separate sides during the Civil War. Afterwards Samuel went with the Jonathan Davis family to Greencastle Indiana. There he married Elizabeth Davis. Later they moved to Turon, Kansas. Do you think this is Pettitt family?

Parents William PETTITT, Livery Stable Keeper - Hannah LOVEALL

She married Abraham Charles FLOWER c1824, London and gave birth to a son, also Abraham, before emigrating to Australia c1830.

I am new to this list. I am a descendent of the Rebecca Pettit who married William Street of Yancey-Mitchell County,NC. Her father is said to be Henry Pettit and her mother Anna Poole. At this point I am totally confused as to her ancestry as to Joshuas and Thomases. Does she descend from the Downing-Pettit line or the Stovall-Pettits? Any information is welcomed.

from Billie Sheets

1.) Hello List I to am searing for a Mary Pettit/Petit she was born in New York my date for that is 1843 although it is not proven. In 1858 July 6 she marries Riley A Sheets in Ogle county Illinois. One child is born in Illinois and they move on to Iowa. Where 6 more children are born? I have been searching for a long time for Mary's family and I do hope someone out there holds the key.
Thank you all for your time
Billie Sheets - Canyonville ,Oregon

from Kay Hustad

1) I appreciate any information you can connect me with. For so long the PETTIT name has been a mystery. I hunted and hunted for Nancy and all I had to go by was her marriage license with her name spelled Petty. Then a very kind man on the TN list came across a cemetery listing for a Nannie Mayo, and everything fell into place. Her son listed her maiden name on her death certificate as Pettit.
Thank you again,
Kay Hustad

2) My great grandmother's maiden name was Pettit, we found that out from her son. What happened is when she was married, the person filling out the forms spelled it wrong, this happened a lot way back then. And I'm not real sure Nancy (Nannie) could read or write back then. She signed the back of a picture to my grandmother, many years later, but didn't write any letters to her. Her youngest daughter, Luella did all the writing for her.

The man she was married to, John David (David) Mayo was apparently a strong willed man. My grandmother wasn't his daughter, so after he and Nancy (Nannie) married he made Oda leave. He farmed her out as a servant, she lived with one family I believe till she married my grandfather. Because of this she never went to school.
Thank you again,
>Kay Hustad

3) Yes, you sent the information on Benjamin & Nancy Flynn, and you may be right that my Nancy Caroline (Nannie) is a descendant of George's. I see that BENJAMIN PETTIT (BENJAMIN, GEORGE, BENJAMIN, THOMAS) was born February 20, 1815 in Overton Cty, TN. BENJAMIN and NANCY FLYNN would have been in the right time period for my Nancy--- he'd been 38 when Nancy was born. So that's a possiblity.
George & Martha would have been too early.
Thank you again,
Kay Hustad

from Debbie Petet

My name is Debbie Petet and I am trying to research my husband Robert's family line.

I have looked through your info and it's wonderful. I am looking for a Thomas Pettit?? that married a Mary Ann McKeel in NC. He was born abt 1823??? I think they died in Webster/Wright Co. Mo. His son was William Gideon Petet married Sarah Ann Greathouse in Wright Co., MO. His son was Robert Young Petet married Nannie Margaret Baker in MO.

Do any of these names mean anything to you. My records indicate that Thomas was b in either TN or NC. His children are b in NC or TN, I've got the McKeel's into the Dodd-Gilley-Davis lines but I can't seem to connect on the Petet side. We spell our Petet but I have found it everyway. On Thomas's record I think it was Pettit. Sure would appreciate any help that you might be able to give me. I've looked at this line for quite some time. Thanks in advance for any assistance that you might be able to share.

Hope to hear from you soon. Debbie

from Sandy VanBenschoten

I would very much like to know the origin of the Pettit family name/history. Could someone let me know, please - either off or on list.

Thanks, > Sandy VanBenschoten

from Leon Richards

I just recently joined the PETTIT-L list, so this message about the family origin is the only thing I've seen. My wife's ggrandmother was a Harriett Pettit, and we recently visited the Pettit Cemetery in Gilmer County,GA. It is on private property so we had to get permission. The lady that owns the property said that particular family was of French origin. She gave me another lady's address that is supposed to know more of the family history, but I haven't heard from her yet. I will post to the list if I gain anything significant.

later... Leon

from Kaye Pettit

I wanted to post what I know of my family line (which is very little). Is this familiar to any of you?

William H. Pettit b ca. 1853 in Ohio? married Christina A Hughes 12-8-1879.

William may be child of David Pettit & Jane Buckingham or John Pettit & ?

William & Christina's children:
J. H. b. 4-22-1881 (Henry)
Alfred b. 6-28-1883 (Al)
William b. 11-14-1885 (Billy)
James b. 2-1-1888 (Jim) m. Ernestena W. Ott 6-26-1912 Omaha, NE
Effie b. 8-27-1889 m. ? Tibbetts
Anna b. 11-2-1901

These children were probably born in Nebraska (Omaha) but could have been Iowa.

James & Tena's children were born in Omaha.

Their oldest child Howard Edward Pettit b. 4-10-1916 d. 4-27-1983 Los Angeles, CA. was my father-in-law.

Anyone know this family?

Thank you! Kaye Pettit

from Audra Pettit

My Pettit ancestor is Abner Pettit, born in Saratogo County, NY in 1821. I do not know any of his siblings or his parents. I know that he moved west across NY and settled in Ashford. He married a Sophronia Weeden (I have a very extensive ancestry on her line). Since your Marie Antonitte was born about the same time and place as my Abner, maybe they are cousins, or even siblings! Do you have any other information on Wm and Sarah's family?

from Dixie Coates

My GGG-grandfather was William H. Pettit, a cooper & farmer in Page County, Virginia. He was born about 1818 and married Catherine Southard 12 Dec 1843 in Page County, Va. My grandfather used to tell me when I was a child that his ancestors came from France, but that is all I have been told. No proof. Does anyone have information on William and Catherine? They had eleven children and one of them was a Henry H. The name Henry has been found in my family line since William.

Thank you for any help, Dixie
