Descendants of Blake CARLTON

Third Generation

5. Mary CARLTON (John , Blake ) was born in 1753 in Brunswick VA. She died on 4 Apr 1837 in Spartanburg South Carolina.

Notes
From Robert Davidson:

"John Durham and his wife, called Mollie, were in Surry Co NC by 1774,
where they lived on Deep Creek next to the Carlton family. They led the
family migration to Spartanburg Co, SC, going back and forth and finally
settling there about 1789. The Durhams had a large farm near Switzer in
the southern part of the county, and over the years they prospered. John
Durham's will leaves land and property and nine slaves to his children.

"John and Mary Durham died on the same day. The tradition passed along by
a granddaughter, Matilda Hoy, is that Mollie died first, and John, not
wishing to live any longer, but in good health, simply put his hands over
his eyes and expired. This may be fanciful, but the "Greenville
Mountaineer" for April 15, 1837 gives this account:

'Departed this life on Tuesday, the 4th instant, in Spartanburg District,
Mr John Durham, aged 86, and Mary, his wife, aged 83. They had been
upwards of fifty years members of the Baptist Church at Green Pond, and
their truly Christian deportment had marked their course. In death as in
life, they seemed one, both being interred in the same grave."

6. John II CARLTON (John , Blake ) was born in 1760 in Brunswick VA. He died in Surry Co. North Carolina.

From Robert Davidson:

"...living with wife, but no family in Surry County in 1810, 1820 and
1830. No record thereafter."

John Carlton II, born 1760, died 1837-38, Surry County. He served in the
Revolutionary War, married Anna ?, in Spartanburg County SC, and then
moved back to Surry County. This is the testimony of Elijah Carlton II,
his grandson*.
Census records do place him in Surry County in 1810, 1820 and 1830, but
do not show a son, only a daughter or young woman in his household.
However Elijah Carlton does give a son:

1. John (Buck) Carlton, b 1792, d 1871, Scott Co Illinois. m (1)
February 16, 1816, Surry Co, Lettice Morefield (1800-1852). m (2)
March 18, 1859, Scott Co, IL, Milly Sweeton.

*But see Lunenburg County VA records where a John Curlton married Hannah
Davis in 1783, apparently after a first wife, Sarah Moore, had died. The
Carltons and Moores had been neighbors in Lunenburg County fifteen years
earlier. Could "Anna" from South Carolina be "Hannah" from Virginia?

7. Elijah CARLTON (John , Blake ) was born in 1763 in VA. He died after 1850.

Elijah "...was brought to Surry County, NC as a child by his parents.
With wife ELIZABETH (b1770), he was still living in 1850 on his farm
between Yadkinville and Boonville, in Yadkin County, but both must have
died soon after. Census records
show six or seven sons and one daughter..."

Elijah married Elizabeth UMN wife of Elijah CARLTON. Elizabeth died after 1850.

They had the following children:

+ 32 M i Micajah CALTON
+ 33 M ii Amos CALTON
34 F iii Agatha CALTON was born in 1795.
+ 35 M iv William CALTON
  36 M v Moses CALTON was born in 1804.
Moses married Mary UMN wife of Moses CARLTON.

8. Lindsey CARLTON (John , Blake ) was born in 1765 in VA. He died in 1834 in Surry Co. North Carolina.

According to Robert Davidson, Lindsey was married twice. The name of his
first wife is unknown, but she died about 1810 leaving four sons and four
daughters.

His second wife was a Rachel Carter, whom he married in 1818. She died in
Surry County in 1831.

The following is from information compiled and supplied by Robert
Davidson:

LINDSEY CARLTON OF SURRY CO, NC
"...Lindsey Carlton lived about four miles north of Yadkinville. Census
records suggest at least eight children by the first wife, and there is
an indication of one or more by the second wife. The family has to be
reconstructed, mostly from circumstantial
evidence. It seems certain that Lindsey Calton, Jr. and Joel Calton, who
were brothers, were sons of Lindsey, Sr. Lindsey, Jr. married a Rutledge,
as did George Calton. All three families ended up in Missouri, and all
use the CALTON spelling. One
daughter, Martha, can be placed in the family because she named a son
Lindsey Luper. Morgan Carlton of Pulaski Co, KY is said by descendants to
be a son of a Robert Carlton, and he was born in Surry Co in 1819, but
there is no record of a Robert
Carlton. Morgan named a son Harvey Lindsey, and he is known to have had
a brother named Bloom Carlton. Bloom, who stayed in Yadkin Co, is buried
in the same cemetary as Charlie R. Carlton, and both seem to be sons of
Lindsey by his first wife,and
Morgan a son by the second wife. No proof. Lindsey Carlton was married by
February 1787, and at tha time of the 1790
census had two sons...."

"...Although Lindsey Carlton owned considerable land, there is only one
paper in his estate file at the NC archives--a bond of administration
dated 1834, which gives no family information."

"...Two girls who married in Surry Co are members of the family, but
their parents aren't certain: POLLY CARLTON married October 15, 1822,
JAMES CARTWRIGHT; and REBECCA CARLTON (b1802), who married JOHN BOHANNON,
October 10, 1823, and was living, a widow, in Surry Co in 1850."

Lindsey married Rachael CARTER on 19 Sep 1818 in Surry county, North Carolina.

They had the following children:

+ 37 M i Joel CALTON
+ 38 F ii Mary CALTON
+ 39 M iii George CALTON
+ 40 M iv Lindsey , Jr. CALTON
+ 41 F v Martha CARLTON
42 M vi Bloom CALTON 1 was born on 3 Mar 1802 in Surry county, North Carolina. He died on 4 Feb 1870 in Santa Anna, California.
Bloom married Elizabeth (MNU spouse of Bloom) CALTON.
43 M vii Charlie R. CALTON 1 was born on 16 Aug 1812 in Surry county, North Carolina. He died on 24 Mar 1870 in Yadkin county, North Carolina.

9. George CARLTON (John , Blake ) was born after 1765. He died after 1830 in Sullivan, TN.

The following information was researched and supplied by Robert Davidson
of Eastford, CT.:

"There is said to be a marriage record of George Carlton to Mary Bone,
1797, in Surry Co NC. This would seem to fit here. George Carlton was in
Spartanburg County SC in 1800, and in his household were an older man and
woman, both over
45--probably John and Agatha Carlton from Surry Co, NC. In 1810, George
Carlton and John Carlton are given in separate households, next to each
other, obviously related, but perhaps not father and son. In 1824 George
Carlton was in Sullivan Co,
Tennessee. Census records also show seven sons and two daughters born
between 1795-1820. Some of these died young.
There is no certain record of the family found, but Blake and Frederick,
when grown, were neighbors of George and Mary and must be sons. Mack
Carlton of Scott Co, VA lived only a few miles away, over the state line,
and census records (twice) show him born in SC, and therefore place him
with this family. All the other Carltons in the area are from Surry Co,
NC."

Lived in Surry County until 1813-14. Previous marriage to a woman (name
unknown) who died between 1810-12.

From information compiled and supplied by Robert Davidson of Eastford,
CT.:

"There are very few records of Frederick Carlton. He was in Surry Co, NC
in 1790, when he was involved in a lawsuit, but is not listed in the 1790
or 1800 census. He is found in Surry Co, NC in 1810, but by 1815 had
moved to Spartanburg Co, SC. He is not found in land records in either
place, but does appear several times as a debtor in Spartanburg County
court records. He seems to have left no estate, and there is no record of
his death. There is no certain record of all of his many sons and
daughters, but placement in the census indicates that Blake and James,
who were brothers, were his sons, and
that Lucretia was his widow."

20. John Flood CARLTON (Blake II , Blake ) was born about 1770. He died on 25 Dec 1834 in Hopkins Kentucky.

The following information was researched and supplied by Robert Davidson
of
Eastford, CT.:

"John Flood Carlton was a son of Blake Carlton of Lunenberg County VA in
1762."

From Surry County Court Minutes, February 15, 1787:

"Ordered--that John Flood Carlton, orphan of Blake Carlton, dec'd, be
bound to William Cook Junr for the term of 22 months to learn the art and
mistry of a saddler. And the said Cook doth agree to learn him to read
and write and to give him
six pounds at his freedom or cloathes to the amount thereof."

John Flood Carlton did not stay long in Surry County. He is living in
Wake County, NC in 1790, recently married, and in 1800. He bought land
there from John May in 1798, which he sold to Henry Evans (Wit: Charles
May) on March 10, 1807.

Later in the same year a John F. Carlton married Mary Watson,
amuchyoungerwoman, in Mercer Co, KY. The assumption here is that the two
were the same. John F. Carlton served in the war of 1812, and his widow's
pension file documents the second marriage. He finally settled in Hopkins
County, in western Kentucky, and after his death the family moved on to
Johnson Co, Illinois."

His first wife was born in 1789 in NC and "...died before 1807. The four
sons and one daughter of this marriage, listed in the 1800 census, have
not been found later. If they survived childhood, they do not seem to
have gone to KY--there may be some record of them in Wake County NC."
