12. Robert MCFARLAND

Robert Mc Farland I, was born in Scotland, April 7,1730. He married
Esther Dunn in 1748 and lived in the Valley of Virginia with his father.
The History of Shenandoah Valley gives the date of Robert I being made
Lieutenant after the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. Both Robert I and
his son Robert II were in the revolutionary war. Robert I then moved to
Kentucky in 1788 and evidently carried his family history or records with
him, as they have been lost to us. We do not have the list of his
children with the exception of Robert II, who was grown and married (29)

until about 1771 to Botetourt County, Virginia. Moved 1779 to Washington
county, Virginia, and then later to Jefferson County, Tennessee.LAND: Robert inherited one-half of a farm from his uncle James. Jame's wife,
Margret inherited the other one-half. Later Robert sold his one-half to

Creek for 20.14 pounds to John Downing. Teste: Abraham Dunkleberry, Nathaniel
Wilshire. (Chalkley Vol 3:330; Augusta County Will page 442).QUESTION: Last transaction mentions John Downing, who was related to James
McFarland. However, James McFarland, brother of this Robert, died in 1750's.
Do I have James McFarlands mixed up?LAND: 1766 Although Robert was still in Orange County, NC, he bought property
in Bedford County. In 1766 he bought 254 acres on the Otter River in Bedford
County from Giles Williams, property that was near to his father, John.

Sir John Mc Farland, of Arroguah, Scotland, was born in the highlands of
Scotland in 1708. He was the last of the chieftans for his clan. In 1728
he marriedMary
Montgomery who was born in 1712. After the battle of Culloden, about
1746, Sir John fled to America from Argyleshire. He was the first of his
family to come to America. The Duke of Argyle seized his estate in
Scotland but it is still in the possession of his descendants.He settled in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia and also lived in Bedford
and Augusta counties, Virginia. Sir John was an elder in the Presbyterian
Church, the old stone church in Bedford County he attended is still
standing. William Callaway's List of Loyal Americans gives the name of
Sir John Mc Farland taking the oath of Allegiance to the state of
Virginia, September 1777, as follows: "I do swear that I renounce and
refuse all allegiance to George III, King of Great Britain, and that I
will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia
as a free and independent state, that I will discover and make known to
some to some one... all treasons or traitorious conspiracies which I know
or shall hereafter know to be formed against this or any of the United
States of America. So help me God.".Sir John was too old for military service, but was an ardent patriot and
had several sons who fought for America's freedom, and one son, James Mc
Farland, was killed by the Indians. Sir John Mc Farland died in Bedford
