Dulaney, Fred

Death Ends 55-year Bank Record for Fred Dulaney; Services are Held Here
People from all walks of life paid their last respects here Monday afternoon to Fred Dulaney, native of Houston, who began his banking career in Tupelo 55 years ago and who was executive vice-president of the Houston state Bank at the time of his death. He was 77.
The chapel at the Houston Funeral Home was filled to capacity and many persons stood on the outside at 2 p.m. Monday as the Rev. Howard Hathorn, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, told of the admiration with which the Houston banker was held, not only in the community but throughout the state.
The pastor said that all of his adult life the deceased had been engaged in the handling of money, and that he had so lived his life that he had laid up treasures in heaven "where neither moth nor dust doth corrupt."
Active pallbearers were Flavius Alford, Bob Scott, Harold Craig, Bobby Mooneyham, Hugh Vickery and Johnny Murphree.
Interment was in the Houston Cemetery.
Mr. Dulaney is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irlene Pearson Dulaney of Houston, and two brothers, James Dulaney of Houston and Lt. Col. Dan E. Dulaney of Bayonne, New Jersey.
The Houston banker just a few days ago had turned the first spade of dirt on construction of the Northgate branch of the Houston State Bank, this community's first drive-in bank.
He was admitted to the Houston Hospital Friday night, October 19, after attending a bank director's meeting here. He suffered a heart ailment. He died at 10:30 p.m., Saturday, October 20.
Fred Dulaeny worked in Tupelo several years, first with the old First National Bank, later with the People's Bank and Trust Co. He returned to Houston in Jan 1920, as assistant cashier with the Houston State Bank was organized. He was assistant cashier to the late A. M. Harley, and the two of them and Miss Louise Evans made up the original bank staff.
He was born in Houston August 8, 1896, the son of the late Daniel C. Dulaney and Minnie Tabb Dulaney. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Mason.
It was thought that he might be the last surviving charter member of the Houston Exchange Club, unless Charlie Justice of West Point as also a charter member.
He was a member of the American Legion Post, and a member of the 40 et 8. For many years, he served as treasurer of the local Red Cross chapter, and as active in the War Savings Bond program.
