Peeler, James Eugene

James Eugene Peeler, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. David Peeler, who died Tuesday afternoon, was buried Wednesday morning at New Prospect cemetery. (Benton Courier; September 27, 1923; page 1)
On September the 25th the death angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Peeler and took home from them their darling little baby, James Eugene. His life on earth was but a short stay, only six short months, but God in His wisdom knew best. He thought best to take him to be a flower in heaven, for we know that such as he do not die only leave this world of sin and suffering to live with God and the angels on high. It is very hard to have to see them taken from us only those who have had the same experience can sympathize with them and know how their hearts ache. Dear father and mother, you can only look heavenward and know that you have still a greater tie in heaven for little James is at rest in the arms of Jesus, where he will not have to suffer as he did while here on earth. He was laid to rest in the Sharon cemetery, Wednesday afternoon, Sept 26. he leaves a father, mother, and one little brother to mourn his loss...poem...Written by a friend, Lexie Collins. Peeler, James Wilson Turner

On April 3, 1930, the death angel visited at the home of Mrs. J. W. Peeler and family, and summoned our precious husband and father.
For several months he had been in feeble health, and for many days had suffered untold agony. Gold alone knows the extent of his pain. But he bore it meekly. When the end came he passed gently away, as though falling asleep, which, of course, he was asleep to wake with Jesus. It was hard, so hard to give him up. But we must bow to God's will, and too, we know that is faring much better now than he ever did in this world.
His life had not been one that was all roses, he had met with many trials. But he was never one to grumble at life's hardships. He had a cheerful optimistic disposition. "Back luck" as folks call it had little effect on his cheerfulness. He would smile and whistle when both danger and bad luck were facing him. There was not an iota of cowardice about him. He was never afraid to do right, no matter what the personal cost might be, and no amount of persuasion or threats would have tempted him to do that which he knew to be wrong. Of course, we do not claim that he never committed a wrong deed, that is impossible but I'm sure his wrong doings were by far out weighed by the good and that God understood and freely pardoned his sins.
Our loved one, J. W. Peeler, familiarly called "Bud," was born February 4, 1846, in Tipper [Tippah] County, Mississippi. At the age of nine years he with his parents came to Benton, where the remainder of his life was spent. In April, 1865, he was married to Miss Anna Needham. Eight sons and one daughter were born to this union. After some twenty odd years his wife died, and he was married to Miss Laura Fletcher, to which union six daughters and two sons were born, altogether his children number seventeen, twelve of whom survive him. He also has 44 surviving grandchildren, and quite a number of great-grandchildren, all of whom feel their loss greatly.
But we should not grieve if we can help it for we know that his life on earth was far above the average and was well spent, and that he now enjoys perfect peace and rest.
Mrs. J. W. Peeler, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Peeler, Miss Dollie Peeler, Miss Irene Peeler, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Peeler, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Peeler, Mr. and Mrs. Dane Peeler, Mr. Jess Peeler, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, Mr. and Mrs. James Wilson, Mrs. Daisy Robinett, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Will Collins.
All of the above signed wish to extend thanks to all who assisted in any way during the illness and death of our beloved husband and father. We also extend thanks for the floral offerings and words of condolence.  [from the Benton Courier, April 17, 1930, page 2]
