EVERETT & HATTIE 'STEVENSON' PEAVEY Sod House - 1888 Merna, Custer County, Nebraska  Everett Wesley Peavey was born on 3 Oct 1866 in Oakland, Kennebec County Maine. He died on 28 Mar 1957 in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington. He married Hattie Mae Stevenson on 19 May 1887 in Clearfield, Taylor County, Iowa. She was born 26 Aug 1868 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. Everett was the son of Charles Hiram Peavey born on 3 Apr 1840 and Sarah Ann Messer born 14 Feb 1847 - both born in Kennebec County, Maine. Their first child Charles Vincent Peavey was born on 5 Feb 1888 in Clearfield, Taylor County, Iowa. This young family moved from Iowa to Nebraska while Charles Vincent was still an infant in 1888. They built this sod house probably in Merna, Custer County, Nebraska, proving up on free land. They cut the sod blocks and lifted them up by hand. There was no wood for a floor - just the dirt. A pit was dug in the floor for the ashes from the stove. After living on the land the required time to make it their own - they sold and moved on. Everett Wesley Peavey and Hattie Mae Stevenson are the grandparents of our Hallie June Peavey, founder of the ' PV Group.' Everett must have taken this picture as he is not in it. His wife Hattie Mae is seated holding their first child, Charles Vincent. On the horse is Alice Frances Peavey sitting side saddle. Everett and Alice are children of Charles Hiram and Sarah Ann Messer Peavey who are to the right of Hattie. Charles and Sarah are the great grandparents of Hallie June. Her father was Hallie Peavey who was the 5th child of Everett and Hattie. Hallie married Lula Caroline Schlaser and they had a daughter, Hallie June Peavey. The family moved on westward through Idaho and settled in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington. |
