He bought land in Barrington, New Hampshire in 1732.

Joseph Holmes of Portsmouth was granted lot 16 of 150 acres in the first range. This lot was next above the land later purchased by Jethro Locke, and it was one of the four lots in town settled by the family to whom the land was granted. Joseph Holmes deeded this lot to his son Ephraim in 1748, at that time they were both from Rye. Ephraim had his home on part of this lot where Chester Scruton lived much later. Ephraim had sold 20 acres of this lot 16 to Joseph Chapman, 32 acres to Noah Holmes and 52 acres to Ephraim Holmes, Jr.; the remainder of his land which was his home he deeded to his daughter Phoebe Holmes Connell.
