According to the History of Strafford County, New Hampshire, Tuftonborough was Granted to Captain John Tufton Mason on December 11, 1750 and named after him. It was incorporated December 17, 1795. The first settlers were Benjamin Bean, Phinehas Graves and Joseph Peavey, in 1780.

The 1810 Census seems to verify his birth date. Joseph is not listed in the 1790 census anywhere which may mean that he was living with another family member at that point. He is on the tax index in 1798 owning a 50 acre parcel, a 100 acre parcel, and a 25 acrea parcel of land.

His wife Abigail is over 45 which verifies her birthdate of 1763. Joseph is between 26 and 44 and that seems to verify his birth date of 1766. He has a son born between 1785 - 1794 which would be Joseph L. Peavey Jr. who was born in 1793. He also has a son 1795 - 1800. The rest of Joseph's known sons were born after 1800 and could not have fought in the War of 1812.
