Notes for LOIS COOLBATH: According to the journal of Enoch Place, he preached at the funeral of Mrs. Lois Peavey on Wednesday December 4, 1844. He had gone to visit the family on Monday December 2nd after he heard of her death to pray and comfort John Peavey Jr. and his family. On the day of the funeral it was rainy and overcast. Mrs. Peavey, aged 92 years died of old age. His message came from "Daughters of Jerusalem weep not for me but weep for yourselves and your Children". Her death was a blessing as she had been nearly senseless for some two years. The LDS Records has a marriage record for John Sr. Peavey to a Mrs. Lois Colbath. This lead to a lot of speculation as to her maiden name and who she married the first time. With the cemetery records and Enoch's journal it was possible to pinpoint her birth date but nothing was known regarding her previous marriage. The notes from Joseph Adams show that he married Lois Coolbroth and John Pevey September 17, 1777 in Newington. There is no "Mrs." in front of her name. Based on this information, there is the possibility that she had not been married previously. Further research in "Newington Families" compiled by Henry Winthrop Hardon show a daughter born to Pitman Coolbroth and Jane Hodgdon who was baptized Oct. 8, 1756 by Rev. Adams. The daughters name is not given which was sometimes the case for children who were stillborn or died in infancy. However in the same records another daughter born to Pitman and Jane was identified as having died in infancy. That was not the case for the daughter who was baptized October 8th. It is also true that many times children were not baptized immediately after birth. However, looking at the baptismal records for her siblings shows that in this family the children were probably baptized shortly after birth as evidenced by the various baptismal dates that follow what would be considered a normal time pattern between births. This is not solid proof but a consistent circumstantial indication of facts. The location in Newington fits. A baptism 5 days after the known birth date for Lois fits. The lack of the title "Mrs." by the officiating Minister fits. The fact that there was no indication of the death of this daughter fits. The fact that Rev. Adams baptized the daughter and also performed her wedding ceremony also fits. The LDS records have the same daughter of Pitman and Jane born October 3, 1856 which fits exactly with Lois' birth date. Case closed for now. I will be placing the Coolbroths in the Peavey tree unless some other evidence comes to light. More About LOIS COOLBATH: Burial: December 04, 1844, Center Strafford Cemetery Strafford, Strafford County, New Hampshire Notes for JOHN (SR.) PEAVEY: Information for John Peavey Sr. of Barrington/Strafford came in part from "Revolutionary Documents of Heads of Families on June 1, 1840". Information for the burial location came from "Colonial Gravestone Inscriptions" under the heading of State of New Hampshire. John Peavey Sr. who married Mrs. Lois Colbath has been a difficult person to track because of his common name and the lack of information regarding his children. We do know from the history of the Town of Barrington that John and his brother Joseph were among the founding fathers of the town. The only confirmed record on the LDS site was his marriage to the widow Lois Colbath. There was a John Peavey Senior listed as a pensioner of the Revolutionary War living in a household that was headed by a John Peavey Junior on June 1, 1840. This was in Strafford, Strafford County, New Hampshire. The only John Peavey listed in the 1840 census in Strafford showed a male and female with birth dates between 1750-1760 had moved into that household after the 1830 Census for the same family. We also had a burial location for John Sr. and Lois in Center Strafford Cemetery (Lisa has Ridge Cemetery) located in Strafford, Strafford County, New Hampshire. The birth dates lined up as well as the location. The Census confirms the likelihood that John Jr. would have taken in his parents after they were over 80 years old. Since this was the only possible John living in the area at the time they had to be connected. John Jr. was married to Mary Caverly with essentially the correct number of children in the household that fit with the rest of our records for him. We now have the first confirmed child for John Sr. and Lois as well as the military records, burial records, marriage records, and locations that fit together. We now have additional information on the Peavey family from a different source from the LDS Records. The book "Newington Families" was compiled by Henry Winthrop Hardon from several sources. His main source was the journals and records of Rev. Joseph Adams. He used the additional sources to confirm and expand the information from Joseph Adams notes. Joseph Adams was an uncle to President John Quincy Adams and ministered in the Rockingham/Strafford area from 1725 to 1760. He married several of the Peavey's and there is a possibility that Rachel who was married to the first Edward Peavey and the mother of the New Hampshire Peavey's may have been an Adams. In addition Joseph Adams' notes might contain information that would be of great help in connecting the family.
