Biographical Directory of the American Congress, 1774-1949 The Continental Congress September 5, 1774, to October 21, 1788 and The Congress of the United States From the First to the Eightieth Congress March 4, 1789 to January 3, 1949, Inclusive United States Government Printing Office 1950 [p.759] PEAVEY, HUBERT HASKELL, a Representative from Wisconsin, born in Adams, Mower County, Minn., on January 12, 1881; he moved with his parents to Redwood Falls, Minn., in 1886; attended the public schools, the high school at Redwood Fails, [p.1663] and Pillsbury Academy, Owatonna, Minn.; pursued various activities in Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma from 1900 until 1904, when he moved to South Dakota and engaged in the real-estate business and in the development of the town sites of Carlyle, Cresbard, and Lowry; moved to Washburn, Bayfield County, Wis., in 1909 and continued the real-estate business; served as alderman in 1911 and as mayor of Washburn in 1912 and 1920-1922; member of the State assembly 1913-1915; became editor and publisher of the Washburn News in 1915; during the First World War recruited Company D, Sixth Infantry, Wisconsin National Guard, and served as captain; reported for duty July 15, 1917, and commanded the company until October 15, 1917, when it became Company D, Thirty-second Division, which he also commanded; served until honorably discharged on October 29, 1918; resumed his former newspaper activities in Washburn, Wis.; unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination in 1920 to the Sixty-seventh Congress; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1923-January 3, 1935); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934 to the Seventy-fourth Congress; again engaged in the real-estate business and also operated a fur ranch. He died in Washburn, Wis., November 21, 1937; interment in Woodland Cemetery. |
