Hello and welcome to the online resource for the Peet Family, where I hope to create a comprehensive study of the Peet surname. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this research, a one name study is a project researching all occurrences of a surname across the world, as opposed to following just the ancestors of one person or couple. As a Peet myself researching the family tree, I was a bit upset to find little information about the Peet (Peat, Peete, Piet and so forth) family on the web. After years of personal research, I finally decided to create this one name study.
Peet Surname
I've always been wary of these sites that claim to provide "family crests" and surname meanings, especially since it's a decent way to make money by simply making something up. Nevertheless here's what I dug up about the surname Peet.
"There are three possible origins: (1) as a variation of the personal name Peter, from the Greek "petros", meaning a "rock", (2) a peat was a nickname for a fragile person, i.e "pet", (3) in reference to peat, decaying vegetation matter. The first recorded spelling is that of John Peat, dated 3 April 1635. He sailed from London to New England on the ship "Hopewell" during the reign of King Charles 1."
It appears we are unfortunate to not to have an official "family crest" or coat of arms; there are a few online, however, although I don't believe they are authentic.

My name is Victoria Peet and I started researching my own family history in 2009, which was unfortunately just about the same time my last great-great grandparent passed away (oh the history she could have told me!).
