The
American Civil War

Newton
Kennedy
Newton Kennedy was the son of Alvira Hull from her first marriage to Fredrick Kennedy. He was the half brother of Lewis Jacob Brown.
Newton
enlisted on 1861 in the 15th Ohio Infantry. He gave his age as 18,
but according to the census of 1860, he was only 14. Therefore, he
would have only been 15 at the time of his enlistment. After 1st Bull Run,
Newton Kennedy enlists in the 15th Ohio. In 1862 Newton Kennedy is
at Stone River (Tenn.). In 1863 Newton Kennedy and William invade
Georgia and fight at Chickamauga. In 1864 reenlists as a veteran
in the 15th Ohio and gets a month-long furlough (I wonder if he went home.....)
In May, William and Newton are at Rocky Face Ridge, and fight at Buzzard
Roost and Dig Gap. On May 12, Newton is killed while on picket duty at
Rocky Face Ridge in Northern Georgia. Below is a description of the
conflict as described by Oliver O. Howard, Major-General, USA.
"Early in the day, May 7th, the Fourth Corps, arranged for battle, was near a small farm house in sight of Tunnel Hill. Two division's, Stanley's and Newton's, abreat in long wavy lines, and the other, Wood's, in the rear, kept on the qui vive to prevent surprises, particularly from the sweep of country to the north of us. The front and the left of the moving men were well protected by infantry skirmishers. It was a beautiful picture -- that army corps, with arms glistening in the morning light, ascending the slope. By 8 o'clock the few rifle shots had become a continuous rattle. First we saw far off, here and there, puffs of smoke, and then the gray horsemen giving back and passing the crest. Suddenly there was stronger resistance, artillery and musketry rapidly firing upon our advance. At 9 o'clock the ridge of Tunnel Hill bristled with Confederates, mounted and dismounted. A closer observation from Stanley's field glass showed them to be only horse artillery and calvary supports. In a few moments, Stanley's and Newton's men charged the hill at a run and cleared the ridge, and soon behald the enemy's artillery and calvary galloping away. "The ball is opened," Stanley called out, as I took my place by his side to study Taylor's Ridge and its "Rocky Face"."
