I have particularly concentrated on the family of Adin Burt, Civil War Veteran from Morrow County, Ohio. His father Joseph (b. 1818) left Morrow County around 1853, for Paulding County, with two of his brothers, following the death of his wife Emily Tucker.Joseph's father was Ebenezer Burt, b. 1783, Justice of the Peace for Canaan Township, in Marion County (now Morrow County). Ebenezer left Somerset Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, around 1824. I believe he was the son of Joseph and Jemima Leonard Burt but at this point despair of ever finding any proof! However, I've had a good time accumulating information along the way. Please contact me if you think we connect!
FIRST GENERATION
1. Ebenezer Burt was born on 8 Aug 1783 in prob. Washington County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He died on 8 Jan 1836 in
Worden Cemetery, Cardington, Marion County.3 1806-1807 Somerset Tp Washington County tax list Ebenezer appears
on the single freemen list with brother William and father Joseph (tanyard and 50 acres) The 1807-1808 list notes that
Joseph, William, and Ebenezer are all in the Hills voting district. (Would like to know where that is!) This list also says that
Ebenezer is a shoemaker (like the father).
All three of them, plus John Burt, appear on the married list in 1808-1809 (and this time it is Ebenezer who was written on
the Single list and then noted as married).
Ebenezer is noted with 57 acres of land in 1816-1817 and noted N.R. (non resident? did the family go to Greene after the
death of Sarah's mother?) also 1817-1818. He returned in 1818-1819 (N.R. written but crossed out). He had only 36 acres
by 1819 tax list. Found in 1820 census. Had only 35 acres in 1822 and his land transferred to Odbert in 1823 (in
preparation for his move to Ohio). This is several years past the date of death often ascribed to him.
Next found in tax lists of Canaan Township Marion Ohio 1827 (cattle but no land) and 1830 census, town of Denmark.
(Remember there was a grace period of several years after immigrating when no taxes were levied.) Probably living on/near
lands of Zenas, Isaac, George Leonard, his wife's brothers and sister's husband. He was Justice of the Peace 1832-1835 at
least. Close friend was Samuel Fuller.
In 1833 he was one of the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church as they purchased a small lot from John S. Garoutte
to erect a church. The deed was not filed until June 1836, after he died.
From Lou Burt's notes:
"[Lou's] grandfather, Ebenezer Burt, and his grandfather's brother, William Burt, moved from Washington County Pa to
New Denmark, Columbiana County, in or about 1815. [Note: Lou was confused. I believe William at least moved to
Columbiana, but Denmark--now Mt Gilead--is in Morrow County, then Marion County, and that is where Ebenezer settled,
about 1825.] The grandfather died suddenly, while hunting."
He was married to Sarah Leonard (daughter of Lot Leonard and Elizabeth Hoge) between 1807 and 1809 in Prob. Greene
County, Pennsylvania. Sarah Leonard was born in 1790 in Prob. Greene County, Pennsylvania.1 She died on 12 Aug
1849 in Worden Cemetery, Cardington, Marion County.4 Probably daughter of Lot Leonard and Elizabeth Hoge: Lot
bought land in Congress Township. His sons Isaac and George and his daughter Nancy (and her husband and cousin Zenas
Leonard) moved south of Denmark, Marion, OH, where Sarah and Ebenezer settled after leaving Washington County PA.
She was living as widow next door to Isaac Leonard in 1840 census Ebenezer Burt and Sarah Leonard had the following

(since she made Isaac guardian of her children). She sold land to Sarah Burt (mom?) in 1845 prior to her second marriage.

From December 9 1880 Sentinel, West Gilead Items: "It has not been safe for a book agent to travel through this
neighborhood since that book of all books, the _misrepresentations_ of Morrow county, has been delivered. ... the balance of
the history of this place is far from correct ... Again the history says, "that the first grocery-store was kept by Davenport
Rogers." This is not true. Before Mr. Rogers came here, grocery-stores were kept here by Isaac De Witt, Mr. Waring, Lot
Burt, Samuel Christy ... If we are to judge of the correctness of the work from what we know here at home, there is not more
than one statement in ten that is correct."

quite heavy, with no insurance. Probably the work of incendiaries."

children:
| 74 | i. | Marvin Burt was born on 27 Nov 1865 in Loganville, Sauk County Wisconsin.46 He died on 26 Apr 1877 in Glendale Cemetery, Cardington Morrow County OH.7 DIED--BURT--April 26th [1877], at Cardington, Marvin Burt, son of Adin Burt, of paralysis, aged 11 years and 5 months. |
| The illness of Marvin Burt, which has been made the subject of several local articles during his long suffering, has finally ended in death. His case was one that excited universal sympathy, not only among those personally acquainted with the youth, but also among people whose attention has been excited by the peculiarity of his disease. Fourteen months ago the lad, in an apparent state of good health, was attacked by what was supposed to be rheumatism in his feet and ankles. In a short time the disease developed more fully and was declared to be paralysis. Since that time to the 26th of April last the boy has died literally by inches, notwithstanding the efforts of some of the best medical talent in the State. The past has been a sad year to the parents. The sick child has been a great burden, and the end was considered inevitable, yet have they striven by every possible means to lengthen out the waning life, that they might have the dear boy with them a little longer. But the time came when the temple of clay was no longer habitable, and the spirit took its flight back to its Maker. In their bereavement the family have the true sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services were held in Gurley Chapel on Friday last. Rev. J. J. Henry | ||
| delivered the sermon, taking his text from Joh I, 8d chapter,
and part of the 2d verse: "And it doth not yet appear what we shall be." The remains were then interred in the new
cemetery, north of town."

Some time since Mr. Burt discovered that checks had come in to the amount of a couple of hundred dollars, the money for which had evidently been used for gambling, or other than legitimate trade expenses. He then reprimanded Marion, but continued him in his service. For a time the young man followed the path of rectitude,
but recently fell from grace, and again drew upon his father's bank account for various sums, for his individual use, amounting to about three hundred dollars. Thereupon Mr. Burt removed his son from his
responsible position and gave him a place in the house, to handle hides and pelts instead of dollars and cents."
In April 1894, not long after the above, Lulu filed for divorce (see details in her notes)
Oct 1898 Russell Bristow Burt was listed with George Burt of Marshalltown as guests at Imogene's wedding. Another news
notice mentioned Lulu being present.
Listed 1899-1901 in Marshalltown IA director as travelling agent. Death certificate says he moved to Chicago in 1902. Says
he owned a cigar store. It also puts his birth date as November 25 1870. Says he was born in Reedsburg Wisconsin and that
Almira was born in Toronto.
Found in 1914 and 1915 city director for Chicago - Marion (occ: cigars) and Lulu (occ: police) living together. In 1916
same occupations but two separate residences. In 1917 at Adin's death Lulu was listed as his next of kin, making me wonder
if both sons were dead (though both daughters probably still alive).
His obit lists wife as Lulu Bristol Burt and son as Russel Bristol Burt. Buried at Rosehill, Chicago I presume.
He was married to Lulu Beatrice Bristol (daughter of Christian Bristol and Sophia Oppenheimer) on 30 Aug 1893 in Logan County, Ohio.67 Lulu Beatrice Bristol was born in 1873 in Indiana.68 She died after 1924. Charlotte Roby in Bellefontaine "went to the civil dockets book as one last ditch effort and bingo there was the three names you gave me. Here is what I found: Lulu Burt, plaintiff against Mario G Burt, defendant Petition for Divorce and Alimony. In this it states they were married on August 30, 1893 in Logan COunty. It says that the defendant has been guilty of extreme cruelty toward the plaintiff in that he has on ____ ____ occasions threatened to beat and killl her and for the last four months and more has continuously used ____ profane and abusive language toward her. That said defendant has been
guilty of gross neglect of duty toward the plaintiff in that he has failed and ______ neglected to provide plaintiff with the
common and ordain necessities of life so that the plaintiff has been compelled to live ____ the charity friends and upon her
own ______ because of his _______ and _____.
Some of this writing I cannot read but it goes on to describe some property. Then it tells that her name was Lulu Bristle
prior to this marriage. She asks for alimony, that she be awarded all property that he has any ownership in, and that her
name be restored to Bristle. She also asked that her attorney fee be paid by him. This document was filed in Logan
County on April 23, 1894.
From Carol Brandt: 1880 Census

In 1917 when Adin died, next of kin was Mrs. Lulu Burt. #2726 North Clark St., Chicago, Illinois (Daughter in Law.)
Lulu and Marion were present at Imogene's wedding. Marion George Burt and Lulu Beatrice Bristol had the following

76. Arminta Burt was born on 17 May 1870 in Morrow County, Ohio.69 She died on 15 Jul 1966 in New Paltz, Ulster, New York.70 >From Cardington Independent, Feb 24 1892
Dunham-Burt (from Bellefontaine Examiner)
One of the prettiest weddings that ever occurred in Bellefontaine was the Dunham-Burt wedding which was solemnized at
the Methodist Episcopal church last evening in the presence of a large and brilliant assembly of spectators, when Miss
Araminta Burt, of this city, was wedded to Mr. C. Irvin Dunham of Rome Georgia ... the ushers were Mr. E.M. Short, Mr.
Loe Haines, Mr. Harry Barton and Mr. Marion Burt, of this city.
At the appointed hour, 7 pm, the bridal party, to the entrancing music of "Satalia's" harp, entered the church ... the bride and her maid, Miss Anna Turner, of Findlay, Ohio, and the lady attendants, Miss Maude Reed and Miss Etta Murray, of Balion, Ohio, and Miss Lulu Barker [possibly Bristol?] and Miss Belle Hamilton, of this city ... and the groom and his best man, Mr. T. E. Powell of Cincinnati, followed by the attendants, Mr. Ed Slough, of Columbus Ohio, Mr. Will Zellers of Mansfield Ohio, and Mr. Harry Kerr and Mr. Marion Burt of this city made their way ... Rev. C. R. Havighorst, pastor of the church, was the officiating clergyman. The ceremony was a departure from the usual form, and was very pretty and impressive. At the conclusion ... the wedding party repaired to the home of the bride's parents, on
Garfield Avenue, where a large and informal reception was held. The handsome home was a dazzling scene of splendor --
beautiful costumes, inspiring music, floral displays, and a happy and gladsome assembly of guests thronged the parlors. ...
The bride is the pretty and charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Burt, and is one of our most cultured and popular young
ladies ... the groom is a handsome and prominent young man of Rome Georgia ... his friends in Rome sent him the
following telegram: ROME, GA: Feb. 16 -- "Poverty Hall sends her congratulations to the man that 'picked the winner.' "
[note, what do you think Poverty Hall means?] [note Willis is not present, or at least not mentioned]
Mr. and Mrs. Dunham departed for the south ... the following relatives and friends were present from other cities:
Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Burt (Joseph's youngest brother)
Mr and Mrs E. A. Martin, Miss Ella McCool, Miss Etta Murray, Miss Maude Reed, Miss Lou Hofstetter, Miss Carrie Burt, John Ruhl and E. D. Williams, Galion, Ohio; Miss Allie Ennis, Stratford, Ontario [note:
Almira was from Ontario, I wonder if this is a friend of hers); Miss Maud Archibald, Topeka, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Burt
Donaldson, Sidney, O; Mrs. Louis Funk and Anna Conn, Ada, O; Miss Anna Turner, Findlay, O; Miss Lilly Fritch,
Defiance, O; Miss Celia Conrad, Miss Flora Conrad, and Mrs. Atkinson, Cardington, O; Ed Slough, Columbus, O, Will
Zellers, Mansfield O; Miss Donaldson, Urbana, O; Eugene Renneckar, Sharon Pa; T. E. Powerll, Cincinnati, O, and W. W.
Mason, Boston Mass.
At the time of Imogene's death, Minta (who was informant on death certificate) was Mrs. C. I. Dunham, listed as living in
Selma Alabama. However, in the death Notice July 31 1958 in "The Townsman" of Wellesley, it says she lived in NYC.
They were "headed south" after the wedding. back to Georgia?
In 1900 Reunion Minta Burt Dunham was listed as hailing from Meridian, Lauderdale MS
In family reunion picture, Vail looks a few years older than Bowen. There is no Irene and no C. Irvin in the picture.
She was married to Charles Irvin Dunham (son of James Vail Dunham and Anna G. Field) on 23 Feb 1892 in
Bellefontaine, Logan, Ohio. Charles Irvin Dunham was born on 1 Feb 1861 in Dunellen, New Jersey.29,71 He died about
1918 in Selma, Alabama. C. Irvin was an engineer who worked with steam locomotives - exactly the same as Charles
Hodges, who married Arminta's sister. I wonder if C. Irvin "set them up."
11/23/1899, notice at Logan of birth of twins. "had Park Hotel, Belle Center" was that referring to Adin or Charles?
Living in Selma, Dallas county in 1910 with all three kids
Died of a railroad accident. "The childred were by then in their teens, and in order for the twin girls to enter college, my
Grandmother Minta secured a job as housemother at one of the sorority houses at Wellesley, probably with the help of her
sister Imogene, whose husband seems to have been well-to-do." "My Mother and Aunt attended Wellesley for a few years, I
think, but I doubt they graduated."
Most of this info from Jeane, phone 310-325-2516 Arminta Burt and Charles Irvin Dunham had the following children:
| +132 | i. | James Vail Dunham. |
| +133 | ii. | Irene Dunham. |
| +134 | iii. | Imogene Dunham. |
77. Willis Burt was born on 1 Nov 1872 in Cardington, Morrow County, Ohio. He died between 1908 and 1958.
Mentioned as being present "on furlough from Company B, Jacksonville" in an announcement of Imogene's wedding.
Willis (under name William) was living with Aden and Almira in 1900 census, 18,4,10
In 1905 Will and Alice were living at the Raymond farm, Poyner Township--They sold this farm to Adin and Almira?
Picture of family has Willis standing next to an Ellen or Ella. Child plastered to him named Ruth looks a little younger than
Richard. Born 1902? Possibly a child of a previous marriage of Ella.
A search was done of the marriage records for Black Hawk County from about 1895-1905 and no mention of this marriage
was found - perhaps they married elsewhere!
No birth record in Black Hawk found for Ruth.
He was married to Ella [Burt] in 1903 in prob. Poyner Township, Iowa. Ella [Burt] was born in 1880 in OHIO.72 She
died between 1930 and 1933 in Elk River?. In Mabel Thorndike's letter she mentions Minta's visit and that the news from
Elk River was that Aunt Ella had passed away. Letter written after 1930 (birth John) before 1933 (birth Richard) Willis
Burt and Ella [Burt] had the following children:
| 135 | i. | Ruth Burt was born about 1905. |
78. Imogene Burt was born on 17 Jul 1876 in Cardington, Morrow County, Ohio.73 She died on 26 Jul 1958 in Winter Park Florida.74,75 Bellefontaine, Logan County, October 13, 1898

"Mrs. Hodges was an active member of St. Andrew's Church .... the funeral was conducted at St. Andrew's on Monday
afternoon by the Rev. Warren G. Hunt. Burial followed in Mt. Auburn Cemetery"
She was married to Charles Bowen , Sr. Hodges (son of Thorndike Deland Hodges and Mary Williams Bowen) on 13 Oct
1898 in Waterloo, IA. Charles Bowen , Sr. Hodges was born on 29 Jun 1870 in Orange, Essex, New Jersey.73 He died on
15 Oct 1947 in Boston Massachusetts. He was "of Sewickley PA" a mechanical engineer age 29 at the time of his
marriage. MJ thinks he met Imogene while boarding - she was a fellow boarder, or was living unmarried in Cleveland,
Ohio, in 1894. Maybe daughter of a boarding house owner. She thinks this could indeed have been in Waterloo.
Graduated from M.E. Stevens Institute 1891. 1895-1926 H.K. Porter Co., Pittsburgh PA, director in later years. "He spent
most of his engineering career designing steam locomotives, as all good engineers should." from recollections of John

of ill health, and that he had moved there shortly after retiring from Wellesley College Business manager job in 1938. "The
funeral service was conducted at St. Andrew's Church Friday afternoon by Rev. Charles W. F. Smith. Imogene Burt and

attorney, and they lived in an apartment in Evanston. ... they had one child Buddy, who suffered from cerebral palsy."
have no family lore to tell you about the marriage of Lulu and Marion. The only thing my mom said was that when Buddy,
Russell and Marian's son, was born, the doctors said he would not live, and that it was Lulu who said that they should keep
him alive. He was extremely handicapped, not even able to speak, and had to be cared for all his life. After Russell and Marian
died, he went to live in a nursing home. Maybe a will from Russell and Marian would give some information about the
arrangements made for Buddy. My mom said that Russell and Marian both died within a relatively short time of one another.
