Rev John Perry

Rev John Perry

(Abt 1709 to aft 1756)

James Perry and family were living in Belfast when John, according to his school records, was born in 1709/10.  He attended Trinity College in Dublin just like his brothers Adam and Joseph.  John started college on July 25, 17261 at the age of 16.  He also attended one of the private schools in Dundalk, County Louth.  His teacher there was a Mr. Garnett.  He received a scholarship in 1730.  Then he received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in the autumn of 1731.2  After that, he entered the church and was later appointed curate at Annahilt, County Down by 1742.  John held that position until 1754.3

In Swanzy's "Succession Lists of the Diocese of Dromore" (pg. 96), there is a short biography on John.  It tells us that he "probably" married Elizabeth Quinn.  She was the daughter of the Reverend Daniel Quinn, who was the Vicar of Drumgath.

John is mentioned in his father James' will written in 1753 and proved in 1756.4  Nothing is known about John after this time though some records5 of a John Perry appear in the 1760's, but nothing to prove which John this could be.  Some speculate that he came to America and settled in Rhode Island.6  Some researchers, such as Wendell C. Perry, believe that John had a son named Daniel, who appears in America with Swift Perry's sons Swift Jr. and John.  They were all living near Joseph Perry.  Daniel reportedly married Joseph's daughter Eleanor7 and moved along with Swift Jr. and John to Monroe County, VA8 in what is now West Virginia.  There may be some merit to that belief.  John's father-in-law was named Daniel9 and this perhaps led to John and Elizabeth naming a son Daniel.  Daniel in turn named his first son John.  The Reverend John Perry probably had several children, but we may never know their names. Some recent evidence shows that John may have had sons named Joseph and Robert, but it isn't strong enough evidence to list here yet.
