Cornish Copper Company

Hayle firstly became a coal port, and also exported ores, particularly copper, to be smelted in Swansea in Wales and Bristol.  In 1704 a large tin smelter was erected at Angarrack and in 1710 a copper smelter was erected in Penpol both of which prospered for many years.

Then in the early 1754 copper smelting began in the Camborne area and a partnership, which was formed in 1758 to develop this enterprise, decided to move to Hayle to be closer to the newer coal quay.

The Cornish Copper Company ("CCC") was established and the parish of Phillack entered the industrial era and boom times.  The company built up a large work force and the population of the parish grew from circa 400 in 1750 to over 1400 by the turn of the century. They also began importing coal, timber, limestone, iron and other goods into Hayle.

In 1791 a residence for the Manager of the CCC, John Edwards, a protégé of Dr William Borlase, was built on land rented from the Rector of the Parish, a fine house of the period which is still standing. 1805-6 saw the churchyard walls built of scoria blocks, a result of the copper smelting process - black blocks which today may be seen all over the town, the dock walls, houses, etc.  The church paid 9 pence per scoria block but to the employees of the Company they were free to build their own houses on Company land.

There was great rivalry between CCC and Harvey's.  (see story)

The following are some of the people who were connected with the CCC from "The History of the Cornish Copper Company" by W.H.Pascoe.
