Children of Bodmin Gaol - 'Scoundrels, Scamps and
Starvelings'
This article by Sally J. Pocock published in the June 2008 issue of the Cornwall
Family History Society's Journal includes a child from Phillack - William Henry
TROUNCE.
In 1846 William Henry Trounce, aged 12 years, only 4' 6"
tall, a shoemaker's apprentice from Phillack, stole some sweetmeat belonging to
Thomas Oliver. He was privately whipped and discharged but not before he
had been reported twice for bad behaviour and been sent to the "solitary" twice.
Whilst in gaol he received a letter from his father, John from Hayle
Copperhouse.

Cornish in Latin America - In the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, many thousands of Cornish emigrated, either temporarily or permanently, to Latin America. Dr. Sharron P. Schwartz of the University of Exeter has built a database that contains details of many of those who emigrated, although Dr. Schwartz acknowledges that the database includes perhaps only an eighth of those who went to Latin America.
To see a list of those who either were born in, or emigrated from, Phillack or Hayle that were extracted from this database with her kind permission, click here.
Additional information on those listed here can be accessed from the database. To further explore the Cornish in Latin America database, click here.
