Mentions Marcus Holling as part of this Missionary Group.

"He started from Alt Lake City on this mission, on 12 May 1867, crossingthe plains most of the way by foot, and occasionally by oxteam.  His ownimmediate group of missionaries were:  Nephi Pratt, John S. Lewis, LeviW. Richards, Willard B. Richards, and himself, the other missionaries in the large party, most of whom were going to Europe, were:  Karl G.Maeser, M. Holling, Octave Ursenbach, James Sharp, Wm. H. Harner,Christian Fjeldsted, , (???) Mortensen, (???) Olson, (???) Reese, (???)Jensen, (???) Peterson, and (???) Johnson.  Due to the deep snows in thecanyons, and snow and mud in the high valleys of the Rockies in easternUtah and Wyoming, even at this late period o spring, their travel wasquite slow, many days making only ten or twelve miles, while on betterdays they sometimes made as much as twenty five or even thirty miles eachday.  The weather was fine for the most part, his record states , thoughthey had a few small storms and considerable wind, but most nights werequite cold at that high altitude and in the open country.  He and theothers soon learned at first hand just what their parents and the otherpioneers had encountered fifteen to twenty years before.  The night ofFirday , June 7th, while camped on the "Muddy Creek", (evidently justsoutheast of Wamsutter, Wyoming), Indians attacked their camp, killingthe herdsman and night-guard, a Brother Christian Jensen, and made offwith the four horses they had.  After burying Brother Jensen, theyproceeded slowly onward being more careful, and doubling the night-guardover teh oxen.  Tavel from there on was by foot for all of them, withonly occasional travel in the wagons when the going was easier.  Theiroxen became poisoned from eating certain weeds along the trail, and theylost a very ffew of the cattle, doctoring the sick with emetics, and thenloading the sick cattle into one or two of the large wagons, andproceeding on their way.  The sick oxen soon recovered, and they lostvery few, while other parties of ox-trains were loosing many of theirbest cattle due to the poisoning from bad feed along the trail.Monday, July1, 1867, they arrived at Julesburg, Colorado, which was thenthe western terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad, then being pushedwestward across the courntry as radily as possible.  From Julesburg toOmaha City, then from Council Bluffs to Chicago, and ont o New yOrk Citythey traveled by "the luxurious comfort of an elegant railway carriage",changing cars and trains three or four times en-route, as they changedfrom one railroad to the other, reaching their destination, New YorkCity, on Saturday, July 6th, where they took in the sights of the bigCity for a few days, though he acknowledges they "all soon tired of sucha City lif".  Wile in New York City they met Brothers Orson Pratt,Brigham Young JR., Mrs Young, John W. Young, Geo D. Watt, and others ,who were en-route home to Salt Lake City, after ahving just returned fromEngland.  Friday, July 12, Brother Maeser procured their tickets forpassage to England on the SS. Manhattan, sailing the next day.  The following several days of grandfather's Journal states how terribly sick he was, learning all about sea-sickness and steerage life, and becameconvinced he was very poor material for a sailors life.   Friday, July26, 1867, they landed 'on good old terra firma" in Liver pool, Englandand wree met by Brothers Franklin D. Richards, W. B. Preston, and C. W.Penrose.  ".......

Snow Ox team which departed Nebraska 13 - 17 August 1864 and arrived in SLC 2 Nov 1864.  Emily and Elizabeth were likely on this some company, no records of a roster exist however.  Joseph being only 14 years old and traveling with Emily and Elizabeth up to this point has been varified.  Elizabeth married in SLC in December 1864 in Salt Lake City which falls into line with the ox team companies arrival.

History of ship - Hudson -

HUDSON
Ship: 1618 tons: 208' x 41' x 29'
Built: 1863 by J. A. and D. D. Westervelt at New York City, New YorkCaptain Isaiah Pratt, a mariner who had as early as 1852 skippered theship Margaret Evans in the Black X Line, was in command of the largepacket ship Hudson on both of her voyages with Mormon emigrants. On 3June 1864 the first passage  began at London with 863 Saints from theBritish Isles, Switzerland, Germany, and  Holland. Elder John M. Kaypresided over the emigrant company. His counselors  were George Halliday,John L. Smith, and Matthew McCune. Other returning  missionaries were Elders Louis A Bertrand, Samuel Neslen, and Thomas O. King  The crossing was unusually slow-forty-six days, but the "kindness of Capt. Pratt didmuch to alleviate the fatigue of the journey." Measles broke out amongthe children,  and nine died and were buried at sea. Soon after landing, another child died at Castle  Garden. One woman from Switzerland also died. There were three births. The vessel  arrived at New York on 19July. Three years later-1 June 1867-the Hudson sailed  from London with twenty Saints aboard, arriving on 19 July after a forty-eight-daypassage.
This full-rigged packet had three decks, a round stern and tuck, and abillethead.  Captain Pratt was listed as owner in 1868. Her registration was surrendered 30  September 1878 because the vessel had been sunk sometime earlier.

17. Hannah Elizabeth TOONE

BIOGRAPHY: Hannah Elizabeth Toone & Edwin Albert Wilde

BIOGRAPHY: The third girl was born to the Toone family on May 11, 1870.  She was named hannah Elizabeth Toone.

BIOGRAPHY: She too, grew up and received her early education in Croydon.  Elizabeth or Lizzie as she was called had a happy disposition and was always concerned with others.  She was a very good homemaker.

BIOGRAPHY: During this time many miles away in Hilltop, Greasley, Eastwood, Nottingham England a son was born to Edwin and Anna Bradley Wilde on September 15, 1870.  It is hard to imagine in that day and age that two people so far apart in miles could ever meet and fall in love and live happily in marriage for over 50 years, but it did happen.

BIOGRAPHY: Edwin Albert along with his parents and brother George Herbert and sister Anna Marie (Annie Fister) came to America and first settled in Como, Colorado.  Little Edwin was seven years old at this timem.

BIOGRAPHY: Edwin’s occupation in England had been a coal miner, so that brought them to this little minning town.  He found employment there.  Father Wilde took out his naturalization papers at the Fairplay Court House as it was the county seat of Park County, Colorado.  That is when he added the “E” to the Wilde name.

BIOGRAPHY: He remembered John Hopkin who converted and baptized him in England to the L.D.S. church and decided to go to Croydon and visit him.  He fell in love with the Lost Creek and Croydon area and decided to plant his roots here.

BIOGRAPHY: We the posterity should always be grateful for his wise judgement for this move.

BIOGRAPHY: Edwin Albert and Hannah Elizabeth (Lizzie) were married on May 19, 1892 in Croydon, Utah.  They were later endowed on June 3, 1903.  They were both 22 years old.

BIOGRAPHY: Elizabeth worked very hard to “Make Ends Meet” (an old saying).  Besides the household tasks she helped with the farm work and the animals.  Often she helped with the hay harvest too.  She always took the lantern at night and went out checking the gates and seeing if the animals were alright.

BIOGRAPHY: Their first baby died while they were living in Almy, Wyoming.  Edwin had found employment working in the coal mines.  He brought his baby boy to Croydon in a wagon .  He stopped in Echo Canyon at the home of Tom Moore for the night.  He was so very grateful for the hospitality shown to him as he was almost frozen himself.  The baby was buried in the Croydon Cemetery.

BIOGRAPHY: They later moved back to Croydon to make their home.

BIOGRAPHY: Their other children were Lawrence Dare, Ann Marie, Altha Leola,  another still born boy, Marcus Reed Toone, and Elizabeth (Bessie).

BIOGRAPHY: All of Lizzies babies were large and she suffered very ahrd births.

BIOGRAPHY: Edwin, George, (His brother) and father were partners up Lost Creek on a ranch located in Gildersleeve Canyon.  He sold out to his father and brother for the ground in Croydon.

BIOGRAPHY: A very worrisome time occurred when their young son, Reed became critically ill.  It was thought to be Meningitis.  Many eyars later a Dr. Charles M. Swindler said “Not so, you had Polio.”  He could tell by the X-Rays that Reed had been  taken for another condition that he was suffering with.  He did recover though after many day of unconsciousness and left with paralysis in his legs.  His folks nursed him back to health.  He had to learn to walk again, as he was about five years old at this time.   It was simply a miracle as there was little known medical facts on the disease of Poliomyelitis (Polio).  His legs were never really stong again in his life time.  He lived to be 93 and years of age.

BIOGRAPHY: This family raised two foster chidlren Echo Beery Boyce and Chester (Chink) Beery.  They were brother and sister and were the step children of their daughter marie.

BIOGRAPHY: Grandmother and Grandfather may not have had all the conveniences that others had but they were truly happy.

BIOGRAPHY: Lizzie’s health began to fail as she had had diabetes for many years.  This disease causes other complications.

BIOGRAPHY: It was decided that she shopuld spend the winter of 1947-48 with her daughter althea and Bill Branch in Ogden.  While there she suffered a fall and broke her hip.  She had good care and was admitted to the Dee Hospital.  She passed away March 31, 1948 while she was hospitalized.

Grandfather spent nine lonely years without her.  He loved her dearly and always spoke so kindly and respectfully of his dear wife.

BIOGRAPHY: Edwin kept working very hard.  He loved to irrigate over the creek on a little piece of hay ground.   He loved to read.  His love for the Big League Baseball games made him so happy evevn if it were only to listen on the radio.

BIOGRAPHY: He suffered much with his eye sight because of the Cataracts that had formed there.  He was operated on but had to wear very thick lenses after that.  (It is very much different now as the doctors put in an implant lense and it has really become a simple operation.)

BIOGRAPHY: He went to a Bull sale in Octobver of 1957 and caught a cold.   He really was sick with it.  He suffered a few little mini strokes and went to stay with Aunt althea.

BIOGRAPHY: He passed away at her home in Ogden on November 14, 1957.  He had a very good funeral with beautiful tributes paid to him.

BIOGRAPHY: Grandpa was a very bright man with a brillant mind and memory.  He was a very good vet by taking a correspondence course.  He saved many an animal for people in Croydon and the surrounding areas.  He also assisted with medical advice and helped to deliver some babies in Croydon.

BIOGRAPHY: He had the most interesting stories to tell of the early days in Croydon.  Some were humorous and others were sad.  He was fun to be around and listen to.  We really missed him.

17. Nettie TOONE

Nettie Toone and George Herbert Wilde

The sixth child and fourth daughter was born to the Toone'son August 4, 1876 in Croydon, Morgan County, Utah.   She was namedNettie.

Nettie spent her growing up years and received her earlyeducation in Croydon.  She was baptized September 27, 1884 probably inLost Creek as others before her had done.

We assume that she too, like some of her older siblings wentto salt Lake City for visits with relatives and possible to find work andto further her education.

She had been acquainted with George Herbert Wilde as theyboth grew up in Croydon.  They were married April 19, 1907 in Croydon,Utah.  They later received their endowments and were sealed in the SaltLake Temple on December 21, 1932.

George wa a brother to edwin Albert Wilde.  The two marryingsisters made their children double cousins. (this situation can alsosimplify their lines of genealogy)

George was born in Hilltop, Nottinghamshire, England onSeptember 8, 1872 and came with his parents, Ediwn and Ann Bradley Wildeand family consisting of brother Edwin Albert and sister Annie Mariah(Fister).  Baby Mary died and was buried in England.

They first settled in Como, colorado and then on to Croydon. We give thanks to a good friend, John Hopkin who converted this family inEngland and encouraged them to come to America.  It is because of himthat Edwin brought his family to Croydon.  They fell in love with thisvalley and decided to stay.

George was baptized October 20, 1880 in Croydon and alsoreceived his early education in the schools here.

The Wilde father and his two sons were partners in a Ranchlocated in the mouth of Giuldersleeve Canyon in Lost Creek.  Later thepartnership of this ranch dissolved and Nettie and George moved to SaltLake City.

George had a very brilliant mind.  He could figure mathproblems in his head.

While he was employed at Kennecott Copper Company he wawsaccidentally struck on the head by a crane.  He never fully recoveredform this injury.  At times he would suffer with memory loss.

He came to visit Edwin on day and saw what a struggle hisbrother was having to cut rafters for a small cow barn.  He said, "Herelet me do it for you."  It was no hard task for him.  He knew the exactpitch for the rafters, thus saving Edwin much anxiety and frustration, and was very much appreciated.  Nettie was a beautiful woman, a very goodhomemaker, wife, and mother.  During the depression they would visittheir relatives in Croydon.  Lizzie and edwin Albert would give themeggs, butter, bacon, raspberries, apples, rubarb, vegetables and milk. The things that they could raise on their ranch.

We need to be reminded that during the depression people werevery poor.  Work and money were "hard to come by".

Sometimes the city folk thought the country folk were betteroff and maybe they were.  It was very "Hard Times" for all.

They had the following children:  Phillip Toone, JamesErnest, Grand Herbert and a daughter Melvia (Bettie) Toone Wilde (Bills).

Nettie passed away on March 18, 1941 in a Salt Lake Hospitalfrom a lingering illness.  She was in her 65th year.

At that time she was survived by two sisters, ElisabethWilde, of Croydon, Utah and Georgianna Condie of Ogden, Utah, twobrothers, James Melvin of Buhl, Idaho and Charles Jabez of Sunset, Utah.

She was also survived by her husband, George and the fourchildren, Grant Herbert and James Ernest of Salt Lake City, Phillip TooneWilde of Spokane, Washington and a daughter Bettie Bills of PhiladelphiaPennsylvania.  She was living there while her husband was attendingMedical school.

At the time of Nettie's death George and she were living at458 Marion Street in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Bettie died quite young of Cancer.

Once day a knock came at my door.  A fine looking man wantedto know the location of thei family.  He said he was a very good friendof the family and an old admirer of Bettie.  He said that she was a verybeautiful sweet person.  I couldn't be much help to him as I was the onlyone home and I didn't know the family.

George was a widower for about five years after Nettie passedaway.  He died May 2, 1946 and was buried May 6, 1946.  Reed Jr. tookGrandpa Edwin Albert to Salt Lake City to attend his brothers funeral. He was buried in the Salt Lake City, Utah Cemetery by his wife.

Ruth Nuttall Bradshaw

Ruth Nuttal Bradshaw was the fourth wife of Thomas Lorenzo Obray.  She was born to Charles Heald Bradshaw and Ann Nuttall, 14 June 1847 at Manchester, Lancaster, England.
In 1856 Charles Heald Bradshaw and Ann Nuttal who along with other members of the Bradshaw family were converted to the church by Wilford Woodruff and came to America.  They brought with them three children , Elizabeth, Ruth and Thomas.  Charles' two brothers, Thomas Bradshaw and his wife Sarah Edwards, and family;  also George Bradshaw and his wife Elizabeth Hampson and family came with them.  When they reached America their funds were exhausted so they went to work in the coal pits .   In pub. A 1953, we find a record of Thomas Bradshaw and his wife Sarah Ann Edwards and birth of a son, Fredrick Thomas Bradshaw at Genoa, Nebraska, 25 Nov. 1858, so I imagine brothers Charles, George and family were somewhere in same vicinity.
Ruth Nuttals father and mother contracted cholera, one dying in the morning and the other in the evening.  Charles' brother George, then took Ruth to live with him and his family.  What happened to Thomas and Elizabeth at this time I do not know, however in Journal History supp. 31Dec 1960 , page 22-23 Roster of James D. Ross Co.; we find the following Bradshaws crossed the plains to Utah.  They arrived in Salt Lake # Sept.1860.  There were: Bradshaw, Thomas (38) Husband and wife, Sarah A. (42);Bradshaw, George (27) and Eliza. (22).  Husband and wife.  Bradshaw ,Ruth (14) and Thomas (10) children of Charles Heald Bradshaw and Ann Nuttal: and families of Thomas Bradshaw and Sarah and George and Elizabeth Bradshaw: Sara A. (6), William H. (5), George (3), Fredrick (1)Anna H. (11 mo.) And Selina (11 wks).
On 30 April 1864 Ruth Nuttal Bradshaw became the fourth wife of Thomas Lorenzo Obray, and mother of 14 Children.   They seem to have all inherited a wonderful sense of humor and unselfishness.  In speaking of Ruth Nuttal Bradshaw, her daughter, Ada Long, states: (copy) Ruth Nuttal Bradshaw died 2 Nov 1916 at Burley, Idaho. She is buried in Paradise Cemetery.
She was strict  with her children but always gentle, kind and fair in her dealings with them.   She was a wonderful housekeeper, excellent cook, and her sewing was perfect.  She was immaculate in her person and demanded the same of her children.
I well remember the pretty dresses she made us of searsucker and delane, and our underclothing with the finest muslin, always possessed some little personal touch of mother's handiwork on the hem and edges.  I do not remember the time when I could not boast a white apron or a pin-a-fore as she called them with a little bit of crochet lace collar. She knitted all our stockings, teaching her girls to knit their own as soon as they were old enough.  She loved to read and would often read and knit at the same time for want of time to do each at a separate time.
She had a beautiful voice and together with several of her daughters sang in the Ward choir, and belonged to the local amateur association, frequently taking leading parts in the current performances.  She loved dancing, and no one could glide more gracefully through the minuet than she.  Always in all that she did she was reaching out and trying to realize the ideal, the beauty in her artistic nature that she had never had time and opportunity to cultivate and express in their fullness.  She had the disposition to measure all things by the standard of conscienceand had not inclination to judge the actions of others harshly.   Her faith in God's purpose and requirements and just judgment never wavered.

James Dobson, who lives within sight of the cabin not having noticed a smoke there for some time, decided to investigate with the results noted above.   One hundred and twenty five dollars were found in his clothes and a bank book showing a small deposit in the Hardwick Savings bank, was also found on his person.  Health officer Dr. G. G. Hall and selectmen Mark P. Goodell and J.B. Fair were notified.  The cause of death was given as heart failure and the remains were taken to South Woodbury fo rinternment.  The dead man was 76 years of age and leaves no relatives but two nieces and two nephews.  His eccentricity was said to have been caused by a disappointment in love when a young man.  Many exaggerated reports of his wealth have been circulated, but the Gazette is able to learn from Mark P. Goodell, who has been guardian of him for several year, that with the money found on him his possessions will not exceed $2000."

56. John EARLE

JOHN WAS 40 YEARS OLD IN 1851

John Earle was a presbyterian minister.  The 1851 Windham, Norfolk,Ontario census listed him as 40 years of age.  He resided in the same area in 1861 in the town of Middleton ( very close to Windham).

According to James Freeman Clark Earl in 1964, in about 1750 aPresbyterian minister by the name of Earl is mentioned in Boston church records.  About 1780, the name Earl is mentioned with the New York disputes over land in SW VT.
Mary Gaffield Bowen told James that the Earls were from Vt. and, beingTorries, moved to Quebec during the Revolutionary War.  Grandfather Earl (John) was a Presbyterian minister and a Professor of Divinity at a school in Canada.  He said that John later became a follower of JosephSmith and "resigned" to become a missionary of the LDS church (note from Mary Gayle Rogers -- this may have been the Reorganized LDS Church).

History of Iosco County, Michigan states John Earl, elected Sable Twp.(Iosco Co.) in 1867.  The first meeting was in home of B.M. Earl in range7 on April 6,  1868. The meeting was to make Plainfield Twp. and to detach it from Sable Twp, which was done April 6, 1868.

The history of Grand Rapids, Michigan (977.455 H2b, 1891) listed John E.Earle as an owner of Kent Woolen MIlls in 1873 (page 189).

At the top of the marriage records it says, "_______, do hereby certify that the following is a copy of the record of marriage of Barzilli Miles Ward and Aimee Abbott".  This may be just an error or perhaps another middle name.  The next line states his name as Barzillai Miles Earl.

At the time of his marriage in 1868, he resided in Plainfield Twp., IoscoCo., MI.

Birthdate and place are from a form Barzillai completed for the Department of the Interior.  He gave his post office at the time of his enlistment (1861) as Leonidas, St. Joseph Co., MI. On this document he stated Aimee was his one and only wife and they had no children (dated1915).

WELLINGTON EARLE
"Rev. Wellington Earle was born in the Province of Ontario in 1845, and died near White Cloud, Mich., September 4, 1913. Brother Earle was in the closing weeks of 'his third year as pastor in White Cloud, and it was fully expected that he would be returned for the fourth year; but suddenly . he was called from earth to heaven. The faithful itinerant has received ;his last appointment and made his last move.
Brother Earle's wife and children preceded him to the better land, and for several years he has been in loneliness.
He was admitted on trial in Michigan Conference in 1889, and has served faithfully ever since. On the 3rd of September he was called a few miles into the country to attend a funeral; after attending to this duty he was invited by the .people to remain and preach in the evening, which he consented to do. He went with a family living near to spend the night. He arose on the morning of the 4th saying that he was not feeling entirely well, but he walked to a neighbor's house about a mile distant. Reaching this place he asked to be allowed to lie down, saying that he. was feeling very badly indeed. He was assisted to a bed and died within two or three minutes. The funeral was held in the church at White Cloud under the direction of the district superintendent; the following brethren taking part: Rev. Russel H. Bready; Rev. C. VanCamp; Rev. F. A. Hatch, and Rev. Mr. McDaniel, as well as Dr. Cogshall.
The body 'was taken to Alma and laid beside his beloved wife who passed beyond about three years ago.
Brother Earle was a good man, a faithful pastor, a wise administrator of the affairs of his charges, and a brother beloved.
The church at White Cloud feels deeply bereaved and the entire village joins in expressions of deepest respect for, the pastor who has gone.
The business men of White Cloud closed their places of business during the hour of the funeral, and men who seldom attend church were present, and all spoke words of commendation of our brother.
"Servant of God, well done."
W. I. COGSHALL.

=============

Taken from "A Fish Tale" by David Fish ---
George Fish was born 24 Aug 1812 and following the deaths of both motherand father was taken by a family by the name of Ames and raised inVermont.  When older, George went "west" to Chicago looking for land.  Hewould not take any land there as it was so wet.  He became acquaintedwith the West family, recently from Grafton, Yorkshire, England andmarried their daughter Ann West 10 March 1840.  Following their marriage,George and Ann moved farther west to the Rockford Illinois area and tookland.  Here is where Daniel Elias, Laura Anna, Rebecca Jan, CeceliaRonda, and Ornan William Fish were born between 1842 and 1848.  Duringthese years, George studied and became a Wesleyan Methodist preacher anda doctor.  About 1849 the family sold out in Illinois and moved to theBloomingdale, Wisconsin area.

Here is where George worked his trades as a wagon maker and carpenter.Around this area is where Schuyler Georege, Ziba Guy, Melvin Joseph, Mary Roseana, and Lewellin Philotus Fish were born between 1850 and 1858.1862 records show Fish ownership of 40 acres of land in the Zion area,Southeast of Omro, Wisconsin.  Early in the Civil War, George went Southof Omro making wagons for the government.  Times were very hard as both Cecelia Ronda (1846 - 1862) and Mary Roseana (1856-1863) died at early ages.  Badly broken in health, George returned home before the Wisconsin belongings were sold.  Likely encouraged by Ann's brother, John West,George purchased land at Cerro Gordo County, Iowa in May 1865.  This land was Southeast of Mason City and Southwest of Nora Springs.  George became a Justice of the Peace when Portland Township was organized in 1869.Late in 1870, Ann, Ziba and Horation Wright died of typhoid.  While norecords can be found, it is likely that Ann and Ziba are buried in Fishowned lot #18 of Spring Grove Cemetery, North of Nora Springs, Iowa.  InJuly 1871, George married the widow, Elizabeth Merritt-Rickerson, grandmother of Schuyler's wife Mary Elizabeth Lyon.  Perhpas JacksonCounty Min.  George's August 5, 1881 letter written at Heron Lake provides much information, including the names and birth dates of all ten children.  About 1890 George and Elizabeth moved east to Watertown, NewYork living there with Elizabeth's daughter Martha A. (Rickerson) Lyon (Mrs. James Bela).  While at Watertown, George became ill and died sometime in 1894.

Notes from David Fish...."A fish Tale"

Ornan William Fish (1848-1924) moved to Iowa with his family about 1865and married Ethelina "Loina" Jane Kelly (1851-1917), of Cobourge,Ontario, Canada, 4 July 1868 at Clear Lake.  Of this marriage there werefive children.
Ornan was an energetic and resourceful entrepreneur of his time.  Movingfrom Iowa to Minnesota about 1871, then homesteading one mile east ofDundee.  Perhaps this homestead was the 145 acres located in Section 6 ofLa Crosse Township, Jackson County but the 1887 Platt is in the name ofGeorge Fish.  Ornan was grading and contracting on the territorialrailroads being built.  The Pipestone Branch of the Chicago, St Paul,Minneapolis & Omaha RR crossed the Northeast corner of this homestead.Legend has it that Ornan assisted James J. "Empire Builder" Hill plan andestablish railroads of the era.  Contracting during good weather, Ornanwould return to his homestead during the winter months.  By 1882 thefamily moved to Worthington MN with Ornan continuing in the contractingbusiness until 1893.  Then the family moved to a farm in Graham LakesTownship, Nobles County, 7 miles Southeast of Fulda, MN.  Here theyremained until moving into the Village of Fulda very early in 1903.  Hewas a man of means.  Ornan at one time or another, owned mining land inLake County, Northern Minnesota, the farm, and tree claims near Dundeeand Worthington.  Ornan purchased Fulda's Merchants Hotel in January 1903and operating this Hotel until about 1906 when he retired.  As fate hadit, most of these holdings were lost due to the grip of "Demon" liquor."O>W>" and Loina" were respected members of their Fulda community.Following a three and one half year illness, Loina died 26 July 1917,Ornan died 21 Dec 1924.  Both Loina and Ornan are buried in lot # 30  ofPrairie Hill Cemetery North of Fulda.  At the time of Ornan's death, hewas living with his son George Albert Fish.

MR FISH GOES TO WASHINGTON.  How does a Wisconsin born lad skilled as afarmer and blacksmith end up in the Capital of the United States ofAmerica?   The following family lore was told by Genevieve LeonaFish-Zanner to son, albet and niece, Beva M.Clarridge-Shellhase-Richares.
Melvin Joseph Fish ws a soft spoken man of staunch and vocalpolitical beliefs.  He was active in local, State and Ntional elecionsfrom his home at Fulda, in southwestern Minnesota.  The late 1890's andearly 1900's had been difficult times with several crop failures.  Withhis family growing, Melvin worked as a Fulda Blacksmith to support them. The Fulda Blacksmiths of this area were, Fish Brothers and Mel Fish.
Without any formal training, Melvin's love of beauty in naturesflowers had moved him to know many latin floral names, species andvarieties.  Melvin's political activities had not gone unnoticed byelected officials.  As a result, he was offered a modest position inWshington, D.C.  Before accepting, Melvin first made a visit to theDistrict.  He ws totally taken by the beauty of this City.  The parks, monuments, squares and massive floral plantings captured his heart. While at Washington, Melvin wrote to his wife Nellie at Fulda saying hewanted to move and hoped the family would join him.
Perhaps the year ws 1905.  the younget Fish daugher ws born May 1905and their son George P. graduated from Fulda High School that same year.
Thereby, it may have been February 1906 when - MR. Fish Went toWashington.

Nellie used to say whenever "Poppa" was late in coming home from work, itwas probably because he had stopped to admire Mrs. so and so's petunias.

1920 District of Columbia Census, Washinton, 1029 D St., 247/307 [65yr]Forman, Street Cleaning.

Melvin and Matilda were married at Worthington, Minnesota August of 1879.Matilda purchased lots 14/15, block 7 at Fulda, Minnesota in Feb 1892.In 1897 Melvin operated his Fulda, Minnesota blacksmith shop.  The M.J.Fish family lived in Fulda, Minnesota until about 1906/7 before removingto the Washington D.C. area.  Melvin died in July 1933 followed byMatilda in August 1955.  In 1958, George P. Fish wrote there were 43members of the M. J. Fish family living in the Washington, DC area butonly he and his wife, Peggy bore the name Fish.

Notes from David Fish..."A Fish Tale"

Lewellin (aka: Louis) Philotus Fish ( 1858-1930) was the youngest ofGeorge & Ann's ten children.  He was a lad of perhaps 7 or 8 when thefamily moved to Iowa.  He was about 11 when his mother, brother and uncledied of typhoid late in 1870.  In 1880, Lewellin was a member of hisbrother Oran's household at La Crosse Township, Jackson County, MN.  By1903, Lewellin was a member of his brother Daniel's in Burleene Township,Todd County, MN.  By 1903, Lewellin went west to Oregon, along withborther Daniel & his fmaily.  About 1905, Lewellin married the divorcee,Mary D. (Wood) Cooper ( 1852-1921) at Yamhill County.  Ruby A. Cooper, one of Mry's daughters remained with her father, I.M. Cooper, whileEstella Cooper joined the Fish household.  There were no children born ofthis union.  This family of three are recorded in the Amity, Oregon areaby the 1920 Census.  It is Lewellin's biography about his father thatgives us the invaluable "road map" to researchjing and compiling a majorsegment of the "Our Fish History".  One must wonder what happened toLewellin's life after Mary died, as we find he died nine years later atthe Yamhill County Poor Farm near McMinville.

LAND: Charles W. aldrich sold his homestead on September 11, 1883 to Addie Walbridge for a sum of $100.  At the time he had a $250 dollar mortgage with Watson S.
