Gladwins in and around Leeds

GLADWINS OF WEST RIDING, YORKSHIRE

The GLADWIN families of Leeds, Beeston, Bradford and Halifax are of particular interest. While there are several distinct families living in this area during the 1800's the number is not large and so it is likely the families moved here from another region. I would very much like to hear from anyone with additional information about GLADWINs from this area. See email address below.

William GLADWIN

1. William GLADWIN was married to Hannah KAY 3 Aug 1818 at St. Peter's, Leeds, West Riding, Yorkshire.
FHL film #918, 380 St. Peter's, Leeds, Yorkshire:
p. 421 - William Gladwin of this parish, husbandman, and Hannah Kay of this parish, spinster, were married in this Church by Banns this 3rd Aug 1818. [both made marks] Witnesses: George Smailes, Rob't Hargrave & Robert Humphries, clerk.

Question: Was this the first marriage of this William GLADWIN?

When the 1841 census became available this family was found living at Beeston, Beeston Royds.  William was listed as age 60 and Hannah as age 50.  Also it has been said that the ages of people over the age of 15 were rounded down so William may have been born between 1776 and 1781 and born in county.  The occupation was not readable.

The date of death of this William GLADWIN has not yet been determined.  When son William GLADWIN Jr. married in 1855, the father was not mentioned as "deceased."  There was a William  GLADWIN who died Dec. Q. 1851 Leeds, and another June Q. 1845 Leeds.

In the 1851 census Hannah (KAY) GLADWIN is a widow living with sons James GLADWIN, Henry GLADWIN and John GLADWIN in North Leeds, 3 Moxon's Yard; born Leeds.  In the 1861 census Hannah (KAY) GLADWIN is a widow age 70; born Beeston Royds. A search of the actual images of the register of deaths available on Ancestry has not found a Hannah GLADWIN of sufficient age who died between 1861 and 1880.

William and Hannah had the following children:

2 F i Elizabeth GLADWIN was baptised 15 Nov 1824 at Wortley, Leeds. No futher information has been found.
