Joshua Pilcher Fur Trader and Indian Agent by John E. Sunder

Robert Pilcher (1 of the 4 brothers to immigrate to US from Wales to Maryland early in the 18th century) his son: James Pilcher, his son: Joshua Pilcher (b. 1749 Culpepper Co, VA died: summer of 1810) married Nancy. After Joshua's death Nancy moved in with one of the older children. Their issue:

From page 21& 22 "Joshua and a fellow Mason, young Stephen F Austin, then a member of the Missouri Teritorial Assembly and later founder of the first American settlement in Texas, quarreled over a young lady. The two men may have known each other in Lexington before 1810 when Austin was a student at Transylvania. Suffice to say, in mid-May 1817, when the Masonic lottery was under way in St. Louis, Austin called upon Joshua to learn why his "once esteemed" friend was treating him coldly. Joshua answered by letter and received an immediate lengthy letter in reply from Austin who vowed that he was "unconscious of ever haveing [sic] at any time, in any place or under any circumstances injured you or wounded your feelings or even harboured the Most distant the least Shadow of an intention to do so in my life." Joshua charged, however, that Austin had repeated to others a story he had told him, in strict "Masonic confidence", about his broken engagement with a girl in Nashville. Austin swore that he had heard the story from acquaintances first, but that after Joshua had told him the story he held it to be confidential. According to Austin, Joshua believed Austin intended to compete for the affections of acertain "Miss F." of St Louis. Austin denied that he planned to court the young lady, although he had recently walked her home from a play to which Joshua had escorted her and bought her ticket. Suspicious of Austin's conduct, although he said he "never [permitted] suspicions to govern [him]...I am always govern'd by existing fact," Joshua gave in to his hot temper and assaulted Austin on the street, badly injuring one of his eyes. For at least ten days Austin was incapacitated by his eye injury, and unable to demand immediate satisfaction of Joshua."
