Chapter XVI/2 - Swallow |
These
merchants of the Haunce had their Guildhall in Thames Street in place
aforesaid by the said Cosin Lane. Their
hall is large, built of stone, with 3 arched gates towards the street, the
middlemost whereof is far bigger than the other, and is seldom opened; the
other two be mured up; the same is now called the old hall. In
the 6th of Richard II, they hired one house next adjoining to their old
hall, which sometimes belonged to Richard Lions, a famous lapidary, one of
the sheriffs of London. This
also was a great house with a large wharf on the Thames, and the the way
thereunto was called Windgoose or Wildgoose Lane which is how called
Windgoose Alley, for that the same alley is for the most part built on by
the Stilyard merchants. There
is one other great house which sometime pertained to John Rainwell,
stockfishmonger, mayor and it was by him given to the mayor and commanlty,
which house in the 15th of Edward IV was confirmed unto the said
merchants, in manner following namely "It
is ordayned by our soveraigne lord and his parliament, that the same
Marchants of Almaine, being of the companie called the Guildhall
Teutonicorum (or the Flemish gild) that now be or hereafter shall be,
shall have, hold, and enjoy to them and their successors fore ever, the
said place called the Steel House, yeelding to the said mayor and
communaltie an annual rent of £70.3s.4d". In
the year 1551 and the 5th of Edward IV through complaint of the English
merchants, the liberty of the Steelyard merchants was seized into the
king's hands and so it resteth".
["Survey of
London"
- John Stow]. There
is a record as early as 1461 of a charter mentioning one "John
Wynter of Almain [Germany],
merchant, to others of 18 rode of Reyneshwyne [Rhenish
wine],
2 barrels of other wine, 4 barrels of oil in a ship of pleight1
called the "Mary",
500 barrels of litmose2
[litmus]
and
7 rode of Reyneshwyne [Rhenish
wine]
in a ship called a cogship3, all goods, property and chattels
in London and elsewhere." 1ship
of pleight - one that was pledged or contracted. 2litmus
- a dye obtained from lichens which turns red with acids and blue with
alkalis. 3cogship
- originally a large ship of burden or warship; a cockboat or small boat. The Hansa merchants exported to ports such as Lubeck, Riga and Antwerp (where the English Merchant Venturers had a staple). The Netherlands was inherited by the Spanish kings by the marriage of Philp I "The Fair" (1478-1506) of Hapsburg and Austria, Duke of Burgundy (by right of his mother Marie) and Juana "La Loca" of Castile by whose right Philip became king of Spain. When Henry VIII ascended the throne, the main exports were wool and cloth, sent on a route from London to Antwerp. The loss of Calais during Mary Tudor's reign ruined the Merchants of the Staple. In 1550-1 sales of English cloth in Europe fell, there was a plague and the merchants at Antwerp were persecuted for their religion.
A
Winter family of Scotland descended from two brother who came there from
Holland. "It
is said that two brothers Winter, the black-haired and the red-haired
emigrated in 1611 from Holland to Scotland"
[Mrs Margaret Burns, Vancouver Canada who was told this by her mother
Margaret Winter, also told to Mrs Joan Bancroft, Clearbrook, Canada].
They possibly came at the invitation of
the king of Scotland who needed artisans. [Mrs
Annie Winter, Dundee]. One
ancestor is supposed to have painted a ceiling in Aberdeen Cathedral
[Mrs Donna
Jean Jeffrey, Oakville, Canada]. Fig.

Winter c. 1652. a farmer at Cossachs farm, Cortachy. Angus >: a.
James Winter (1660-31.1.1732), farmer of Peathaugh Farm, Glen Isla, fought
at battle of Saugh in 1700 and was buried at Cortachy church.
His tomb has the inscription: "Here lyes James Vinter who died at PeathaughWho
fought valiently at ye Water of Saugh Along
with Ledenhendry who did command ye day They
vanquis the enemy and made then run away." According to a newspaper article by Colin Gibson (obtained from Mrs Donna Jean Jeffrey from Oakville, Canada), the verse relates to a battle of local crofter against a band of Highland catarans (outlaws) who had descended on the pastures at Fern, a village east of Cortachy and made off with the local crofter's cattle. The men of Fern, led by young Ledenhendry, went in pursuit, following the tracks of men and cattle over the snow-patched hills. Eventually they came upon the thieves encamped by the banks of the Water of Saugh, north of Fern over the hills. In a short and fierce fight all the catarans including their leader Hawkit Stirk were slain. One of them, named Donald Young, made an effort to escape but died on a hill-slope still named after him "Shank of Donald Young". b.William

Winter 23.12.1781 Mrs Winter, sister of Rev. Lucy of Charlcote, Warwickshire, died at Bishop's Lydeard, Somerset on 19.4.1792 (Gentleman's Magazine 391). The Rev. Lucy was originally John Hammond, rector of Tolland who changed his surname as a condition of inheriting the Lucy properties at Charlcote. Mrs Winter was Susannah nee Hammond, wife of Galhampton Winter of Bishop's Lydeard. "On Sunday last, at Bishop's Lydeard, after a few days illness in the 85th year of her age, died Mrs Dorothy Winter, relict of Charles Winter Esq., of Court House in the same parish and daughter of the later Sir William Yea, baronet of Pyrland House, near Taunton". [Obituary, Taunton Courier 2.12.1813]. Mrs Dorothy Winter was buried at Wivesliscombe on 6.12.1813 and was a sister (not daughter) of Sir William Yea. The Yeas had tenure of Okehampton House, Wiveliscombe for a long time. In "Wifela's Combe" [parish history p.246] there is a brief reference to old Squire Yea and the "Hell Hounds" [Palmer's "Folklore of Somerset" 1976, p.79] and Gwynn ap Nudd's "Wild Hunt" with the "Yeth Hounds" or "Wish Hounds" the sight of which was considered very unlucky. Phillipa

Winter of Bishops Lydeard, husbandsman married Betty White, spinster at
West Bigborough on 5.5.1762. They
were Peter Winter of Enochdhu's great great great great grandparents.
[Phillimore's
Somerset Marriages"]. The cousins Fred and John were brought up together as boys in the same Wiveliscombe houshold. His birth certificate only shows his mother's name. George and Elizabeth Tyler living at Freshwater, Isle of Wight according to the 1881 census, together with Fred, nephew of George, a cabinet maker and upholsterer. John's 1936 burial at Milverton was paid for by Frederick (the obituary notice lists names of the family who were at the funeral including Mr Collard of Swindon, his cousin). Several of John's sons worked for short periods with Fred in Swindon. John's eldest son and both his own 2 sons had expensive public school education at Dauntsey's near Devises, Wiltshire, though the parents did not appear that affluent. From about the age of 40 Fred began to appear in the "gentry" columns of Swindon's directorties. Mrs Mary Collard's Will made in 1880 for £23 was a complicated docment for such a small sum (perhaps there were previous settlements) specifically indicated that her husband made a Will in April 1879 but there is no sign of this Will in the usual probate records and perhaps it was never proved). Mrs E. Tyler's 1917 Letters of Administration stated that she was a widow without surviving children yet Fred was alive and very well in Swindon. She died at Ryde, Isle of Wight. Frederick's 1952 Will concerned an estate valued in excess of £280,000. His 1952 obituary in the Swindon newspapers was very modest indicating very briefly that he was a local businessman and former president of Swindon football club. The last surviving of John's 10 sons Christopher at Williton aged 78, mentioned in a letter that Fred and John were half-brothers i..e. their father was Charles Winter. Charles Winter enjoyed several quite reasonable sized inheritances in his time yet his son John never had any spare money. Early in 1872 there was a small petty sessions report in the local newspaper [Somerset County Gazette] as he had assaulted a fellow citizen of Wiveliscombe and earned himself 21 days hard labour - perhaps the reason he and his wife were living apart when the census was taken a few weeks later. He died January 1870 of TB aged 29 during a particularly severe winter. His complicated Will for £200 was made a week before he died. The money was left to a solicitor's clerk. Census
