Battle of Bucksnort

The Link Family of Newport, Virginia
The Battle of Bucksnort

The battle Bucksnort was fought Monday Eve July 13th 1885.  "Generals"
commanding "Big Ike", contending against the "old Blades" of Bucksnort after
a furious contest the battle resulted with a glorious victory for "Big Ike"

Big Ike walked away happy and gay.
Calling loudly for the Band to play.
And so "Big Ike" walked down the Lane.
Swinging his bridle by the Rein.
And so as he got over near the Gate,
The "old Blade" stared with furious rate.
Once more he thoought he would give "fight"
And so he came back Thursday night.
He came like the Devil down the hill-
and stopped awhile at Bland Paynes Mill.
When he got here it was almost night
and he saw the "old Blades" fixing to fight.
And as the Girl came to the head of the Lane.
The "old Blades were there for a "Devil" of a game.
Although the "old Blades" curse and moan
"Big Ike" he got the Girl once more.
"Big Ike" carried her away at last
And talked on furiously and fast.
The heaven came down their souls to greet
And "Big Ike" crowned the mercy seat.
But things like this cannot always last.
So the "old Blades" got the "gal" and held her fast
"Big Ike" was left all alone
Over the hills and valleys to roam
We do not wish this "piece" for sale

So we will wind up the tale.
        Bucksnort Virginia,
                     Thursday night
                       July 16th 1885

Author Unknown.  Bucksnort is now known as Maybrook, Virginia.  The "battle" is a jousting tournament.
