FreeBMD Home Page FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records. It is a part of the FreeUKGEN family, which also includes FreeCEN (Census data) and FreeREG (Parish Registers). To search the records that have so far been transcribed by FreeBMD click on the Search button below.

The recording of births, marriages and deaths was started in 1837 and is one of the most significant resources for genealogical research. The transcribing of the records is carried out by teams of dedicated volunteers and contains index information for the period 1837-1983.

Makowarsko Parish Birth Index The index is based on a microfilmed copy of Roman Catholic parish records made by the Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City, Utah, film 493393.

This index is intended as a finding aid and is not to be used as a primary source of genealogical data. Rather than having to read the microfilm line by line, the index helps locate persons more rapidly. The index was prepared as a finding aid for my own research but other researchers may find it useful. Approximations of illegible surnames were made.

Lubaczow
Lubaczow (in Podkarpackie province) was one of only a few locations in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lwow to remain within Poland when the national boundaries were redrawn in 1945. The church archive which was established there became a depository for many of the parish records from the archdiocese. In 1984 an inventory of these was drawn up. This inventory has been microfilmed by the LDS (film no. 2041194). The following is a list of the parishes in that inventory.

Canadian newspapers on microform : held by the National Library of Canada The National Library of Canada receives, through legal deposit, all newspapers filmed after January 1, 1988 for which more than three copies are produced. The National Library also participates in the Decentralized Program for Canadian Newspapers by acquiring and listing all newspapers filmed by the provincial/territorial institutions responsible for filming them (where funds permit and when other no institution makes the title available on interlibrary loan). Also, the National Library will attempt to acquire all newspapers filmed commercially before 1988, starting with daily newspapers. In addition, all ethnic, native and student newspapers filmed are also purchased when they do not meet the legal deposit requirements.

This list, organized by province/territory and city, contains over 2300 Canadian titles including ethnic, native and student newspapers. This version of the list has been produced from an in-house finding aid which allows onsite users to easily locate all of the National Library holdings for a particular title that are available on microfilm. Please note that this list is not connected to a bibliographic system that provides access to interlibrary loan services. Users should consult AMICUS before requesting material through the services of their local library.

Maps of Slovakia & Environs The territories of present-day Slovakia were a part of Hungary for nearly 1,000 years, until the conclusion of World War I, which resulted in the demise of the Austria-Hungary Monarchy. The Hungarians used their own language of Magyar to denote the names of settlements. Researchers quickly learn that their village had multiple names over time. The largest emigration occurred during the Hungarian rule, This is why so many Hungarian maps are included in this reference. In 1910 the Magyar language was "modernized". After World War I (1918) only the territory remaining in Hungary retained Magyar names. As a general guideline, before 1910, villages used Magyar names and after 1918, villages reverted to the local / indigenous place name. Keep this fact in mind as you compare maps created before and after these dates.

National Digital Newspaper Program NEH recently solicited proposals from institutions to participate in the development of a test bed for the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). Ultimately, over a period of approximately 20 years, NDNP will create a national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers from all the states and U.S. territories published between 1836 and 1922. This searchable database will be permanently maintained at the Library of Congress (LC) and be freely accessible via the Internet. An accompanying national newspaper directory of bibliographic and holdings information on the website will direct users to newspaper titles available in all types of formats. LC will also digitize and contribute to the NDNP database a significant number of newspaper pages drawn from its own collections during the course of this partnership between NEH and the Library.

Galicia (Central Europe) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Galicia is a historical region currently split between Poland and Ukraine. The Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, or simply Galicia, was the largest, most populous, and northernmost province of Austria from 1772 until 1918, with Lemberg (Lwów, L'viv) as its capital city. It was created from the territories taken from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the partitions of Poland and lasted until the dissolution of Austria-Hungary at the end of the First World War.
