Moses Porter⁽⁴⁴⁾ was born on 19 MAY 1787 in Eskdale, Cumberland, England. He died on 27 MAY 1864. Moses Porter, eighth son of Joseph and Sarah Porter of Low Holme. Brought up a shoemaker, lived at Egremont, where he became owner of the Tarn Bank Tan Yard. He befriended an old lady named Dinah Towerson, who left him at her death some three or four fields, which he offered to his brother George for 500 pounds. George declined them, and "never rued by once." for these fields carried their own royalty and contained the famous Parkside iron mine, which ultimately made Moses a wealthy man.

OBITUARY.
Moses Porter, a Union Township Pioneer.-Sketch of His Life.
Moses Porter was born in Hampshire County, Virginia, November 14th 1799. He
emigrated to Champaign County, Ohio, in 1809 where he lived with his uncle and learned the
saddlers' trade which he followed until he came to this county. In the year 1825 he married Allie
Watt with whom he lived over 57 years. He was the father of ten children, four of whom are still
living. About 1830 he came to Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio, where he worked at his trade until in
the spring of 1834, when he came to this county and entered a piece of land which he owned
until his death. After living in this county eighteen months he became discouraged and disgusted
with pioneer life, as he had always worked at his trade and was not inured to the privations and
hardships of the frontier. On this account he left the farm and returned to Sidney where he
remained about eighteen months, after which he returned to the farm again where he resided
continuously to the time of his death, May 16th 1884, aged 84 years, 6 months and 2 days.
