His Excellency M�rio Lino da Silva On this date, on which we commemorate the 165th anniversary of the arrival of the first Madeirans to Trinidad & Tobago, I would like to send, in my capacity as ambassador designate of Portugal to Trinidad & Tobago, special greetings to all of the Portuguese community, and especially to the Madeiran community resident in our neighbouring country. On the 9th of May, it is incumbent on us to remember and honour all of the men and women originating from our Pearl of the Atlantic. Those men and women were embued with the same spirit of adventure as the ship captains, Jo�o Gon�alves Zarco, Trist�o Vaz Teixeira and Bartolomeu Perestrelo. In 1846, these Portuguese stopped at new places in search of a better life, and they found their shelter in these welcoming and hospitable countries of the Caribbean. Naturally, the spirit of adventure of the pioneers has been modified over the decades. This is a result of greater predictability of situations and accessibility of information. It therefore is not strange that contemporary Madeiran migration appears to be no longer rooted in the spirit of Vaz Teixeira, Zarco and Perestrelo, although the objectives of those first waves of migrants from the archipelago of Madeira remain the same: greater opportunities and higher standards of living. This objective, which has guided various groups of Madeirans scattered throughout the world, could only be realised thanks to the continuity of certain dimensions that allow cementing the esprit de corps, so characteristic of these Atlantic communities. I refer to the spiritual and religious dimensions, to determination, to entrepreneurship, to solidarity, to generosity, to togetherness, to gratitude, among others. These values, which are not at all foreign to Portuguese Atlantic islanders, will continue as part of the genetic code of Madeirans over the centuries. Here I would like particularly like to emphasise the value of gratitude, gratitude to those who welcomed them, as well as their propensity for hard work and entrepreneurship. All of these traits have contributed to the development and progress of the societies of which they have become a part. We hope that the 9th of May will continue to be permanent symbol of the relationship between the people of Portugal, in particular Madeirans, the people of Trinidad & Tobago, and may the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago continue to prosper - these are the sincere wishes of Ambassador M�rio Lino da Silva. Mensagem do Embaixador M�rio Lino da Silva (Original Version in Portuguese - Vers�o original em portugu�s) Nesta data em que se comemora o 165.� anivers�rio da chegada dos primeiros madeirenses a Trindade e Tobago queria enviar, na minha qualidade de embaixador designado para representar Portugal junto da Rep�blica de Trindade e Tobago, uma sauda��o muito especial a toda a comunidade portuguesa e, em especial, � comunidade madeirense residente neste pais irm�o. Neste 9 de Maio, imp�e-se-nos recordar e homenagear todos os homens e mulheres oriundos da nossa p�rola do Atl�ntico que, imbu�dos do mesmo esp�rito aventureiro dos Comandantes de barcas Jo�o Gon�alves Zarco, Trist�o Vaz Teixeira e Bartolomeu Perestrelo, demandaram em 1846 novas paragens em busca de uma vida melhor e encontraram o seu porto de abrigo nestas terras acolhedoras e hospital�rias do Caribe. Naturalmente que o esp�rito aventureiro prevalecente nos pioneiros foi-se matizando com o decorrer das d�cadas, fruto da maior previsibilidade das situa��es e da acessibilidade � informa��o, n�o sendo por isso de estranhar que a contemporaneidade da emigra��o madeirense j� n�o apare�a arraigada ao esp�rito dos Vaz Teixeira, Zarco e Perestrelo, embora se mantenha o objectivo de sempre que acompanhou as primeiras vagas oriundas do arquipelago: mais oportunidades e melhores n�veis de bem-estar. Este objectivo que tem norteado os v�rios colectivos madeirenses espalhados pelo mundo, s� tem sido poss�vel realizar merc� da perenidade de certas dimens�es que permitem cimentar o esp�rito de corpo caracterizador destas comunidades atl�nticas. Refiro-me � dimens�o espiritual e religiosa, ao empreendorismo, � combatividade, � solidariedade, � generosidade, � combatividade, ao esp�rito de cl�, � gratid�o, entre outros. Intuiu que estes valores, a que n�o s�o estranhos os insulares, continuar�o ao longo dos s�culos a fazer parte do c�digo gen�tico dos madeirenses, em particular a gratid�o, que aqui queria sublinhar. Gratid�o para com aqueles que os souberam acolher, acompanhada do trabalho e do empreendorismo como contributos para o desenvolvimento e progresso das sociedades onde se souberam inserir. Que o 9 de Maio continue a ser o s�mbolo fundacional das inter-rela��es civilizacionais entre portugueses, em particular madeirenses, e os trinit�rios e tobagenses e que o progresso de Trinidad e Tobago continue a ser uma realidade s�o os votos do Embaixador M�rio Lino da Silva. 9 de Maio de 2011
