PoWI About the Authors

Jo-Anne Ferreira

Jo-Anne was born in and officially resides in T&T, but has been known to frequently jump on a plane for study and research trips abroad. Apart from her love of travelling and learning, her real loves are Jesus and linguistics (languages too). She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus, where she completed her doctoral thesis on the social history of the Portuguese language in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999.

On the genealogy front, Jo-Anne's first inspiration was one of her cousins. Genealogy simply and logically appealed to her collector's instincts! In 1984, on the occasion of their grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary, Jo-Anne compiled their immediate family tree with some help from cousin Jacinta, who was actually the first in the family to begin documenting their rather large Ferreira family forest. (Interestingly, Jacinta's daughter, Alicia has recently produced a short film called "Luso-Trinidad" (2008), whose title was inspired by Jo-Anne's research into the Luso-Trinidadian community - a circle of inspiration.) Since those early beginnings, slow but definite progress has been made for both sides of Jo-Anne's family, on both the vertical and horizontal planes.

One of her Madeiran great-grandparents was from Machico, in the eastern part of Madeira.

Click here for more on how Jo came to research the history of the Luso-Trinbagonian community (the Portuguese community of T&T), and here for information on her first book. (Please note that this book is currently out of print, but will be reprinted in a revised and updated edition in the near future. See Jo-Anne's e-mail below for keeping in touch about this and other publications.)

Dean de Freitas

Dean was born in Trinidad, and moved to the U.S at the age of 11. There were quite a few Trinis around while he was growing up in Miami, so the memories of "home" were never far behind.

Dean is a civil engineer by training, and works in the construction business. Computers are his hobby, and the little ones in the picture are the reason he became interested in genealogy.

Dean is the volunteer Country Coordinator for the Trinidad and Tobago Genealogy Project (TriniGenWeb), a part of WorldGenWeb, and has a personal site called Dean's Family History.
