He owned the Stuart Hotel in Riparia, Wash. (aka Texas Ferry). There were two hotels: a wood building that burned and a brick building built afterward, in 1908. The 1910 census lists him as the manager of the hotel.123
Mary Alice Brunner remembers that William Henry Stuart and his wife, Mary Jane Startin, lived in California before they moved north. They stopped in Portland, where their first daughter, Alice Blanche Stuart, was born. She was born downtown, near where the Meier & Frank store is today.
They were married in California.
