BÖHM or BÖEHM is from the tribal name Baii + heim ‘homeland’ the Baii or Boii were a tribe, probably Celtic, who inhabited the region in the 1st century AD and were gradually displaced by Slavic settlers in the period up to the 5th century. German (Böhm), Dutch and Jewish (Ashkenazic) ethnic name for a native or inhabitant of Bohemia (part of the Czech Republic) from Böhmen, German name of Bohemia (Middle High German Böheim, Bēheim)

*my direct line - Earliest record of our BÖHM ancestors is beginning 1800's either born or residing in Mikulov (Nikolsburg), Moravia. ".. Around 1840, widowed (?) Böhm with her children moved to Vienna and opened a business trading in hares skins for the manufacture of felt hats. The premises were located on the Fischer Stiege, a still existing thoroughfare near the Danube Canal.." *See Stories for further details, 1819+ family tree drawn by great grandmother Leonie (Bohm) Friedmann or Brüder Böhm Hats -TextileEnglish/Český history

".. In the 1850's a shop for the cleaning and carrotting of the skins and for cutting the fur was established in Vienna's Gumpendorfer Strasse (now in the VIth district); the product represented the fully prepared raw material for the hatters. In 1862 a complete, new hat factory was established at Schottenfeldgasse, Vienna. In 1881 a considerably larger factory was added in Prag-Bubna.."

Note: Extract from his brothers story Joele - 1969 about my family: "..Amidst these rather turbulent times, 1918-1920, Victor completed the construction and equipment of the Novy Jicin(Neutitshein) factory, which he had begun in 1914. It was a wonderful, "brand new modern" building and would have been modern even by today’s standards. It employed 2,000 people and Vienna had 400. According to the original plan, the Prague factory was then moved to the new plant.." -comment- In 1941 the Factory became J. HÜCKEL and Sons (communist takeover under Benes decr., same as Heeg & Friedmann in Šternberk) and kept this name, until it was nationalized and TONAK, a state-owned enterprise, was established. *see Radio Prague article: Novy Jicin - the cradle of Hat production (google translation from original German version)

**Under review: Bob Lenk Mikulov (Nikolsburg) Bohm ancestors

Isak BOHM Born: unknown Died: 1808 in Nikolsburg + Gütl (?) Died: 1813 in Nikolsburg

From the familien-register of Nikolsburg, it seems that the couple you identify as BOHM were Herschl (sometimes spelled Hirschl or Hirsch) and Fradl Bohm. They had the following children's births recorded: (explanation of what records exist Nikolsburg/nikres.htm)

Name Birth Date Presumed name in Vienna
Josua Ber Bernat 1820 Bernhard
David 1822
Katti 1824 Katharine
Güetl (Gütl) 1826
Naftali 1828 Naphtali
Resl (perhaps Resi?) 1831 Josephine

Name Death Date Presumed name in birth records
David, son of Hersch 1826
Bella, dtr of Herschl 1826 Gutl
Herman 1837 Herschl

I did not find a birth of Herschl or marriage to Fradl, as earlier years are far from complete. Based on these records, I made the assumptions about name equivalences. I have found many variations and inconsistencies of similar magnitude in names and dates - especially in the Nikolsburg records. The death listings in the Familienten-Register include two entries for Fani Bohm, wife of Josua Ber, dated 1838 and 1839. Most likely one of these is the same as Fradl Bohm, mother of the 4 children. The equivalence of Herman (in the death record) and Herschl is likely. Furthermore, there is a grave recorded as Herschl in the Nikosburg Left to right, Lea, Hirsch and Woegele Boehm of Nikolsburgcemetery database

I photographed a grave (and according to the database) left to right are: Lea, Hirsch, and Woegele. I have not been able to read the name to verify if it is the correct grave, but the year of death seems to be correct, 5596 or 5597 (1836 or 1837)

I have a total of 15 digital photographs of these 3 graves, about 17 MB total in size. I could email them, or the better ones. If that's too much to download, I could mail you a CD. Someone with good Hebrew fluency (especially someone familiar with grave s) and a lot of patience could certainly read more than I have been able too, but not necessarily everything. One of the adjoining stones is broken and incomplete. I do not see any clear connection to my line. There were not that many Bohm households in Nikolsburg, so some connection is likely.

In summary, the State Central Archives in Prague have birth, marriage and death records back only as far as 1850. Earlier ones were destroyed. Luckily, in 1913 Rabbi Moritz Levin decided to compile a "Familien-Register", a complete index of the birth, marriage and death registers up until that year, and this massive tome has survived in the Nikolsburg collection of the Jewish Museum Archive. The index contains useful information in addition to the family names, according to which it is organized. The birth index starts in 1767 and gives first name, family name and year of birth as well as the names of father and mother. The marriage index starts in 1798 and gives first and family names of the marriage parties and the year in which the marriage took place. The death index starts in 1798 and gives year of death and age as well as often the name of father, mother or spouse, or else profession. When I was in Prague I transcribed all of the BOHM entries from the Familien-Register (abt. 72 births, 43 deaths, 13 marriages)
