The magazine, “Klepy” (which means Gossip), was born on August 30, 1940, and over the next two years, twenty-two issues were created and circulated. The magazine included simple type-written stories, elaborate paintings, and editorials, all created in the midst of war. Note: "War loot Cranach in North Carolina - Two pictures looted by the Nazis have turned up in unlikely places in the US, indicating the breadth and depth of war loot's penetration into the
country...
The painting in question is “Madonna and child in a landscape", around 1518, by Lucas Cranach the Elder, and it now hangs in a place of prominence in the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, which values it at some $750,000-$1.2 mil. The Cranach is being claimed by Marianne and Cornelia HAINISCH in Vienna, who allege that the painting had been the property of the Viennese Austrian collector Philipp Gomperz, their great-uncle, who fled Austria and left it with a niece in 1938. *see Lucie (Gomperz) RIE The painting was seized by the Gestapo, placed in a private gallery and purchased by the Nazi Gauleiter Baldur von Schirach in 1942. After the war, Schirach was imprisoned for war crimes and the Cranach was sold to the New York dealer Siegfried Thalheimer, who sold it to Abraham Silberman, another dealer, who sold it to a collector in Beverly Hills, George Khuner. Mr Khuner, like Mr Silberman an Austrian Jew, had the picture authenticated by William R. Valentiner, who founded the North Carolina Museum of Art in 1955.
At the death of Khuner's wife Marianne, the picture was donated to the museum... painting stays in N.C."
