The Saul Family Photo Album

A photo album dating from between the 1860s - 1880s was found recently in an attic in Prospect. The photo album is believed to have belonged to Jessie Saul who was the housekeeper of Jim Coolen and Susan (McGuire) Benning Coolen around 1900. The photo album contains pictures of members of the Saul family as well as the McGrath, Power, Purcell, Duggan, Barber, Norris, Calahan and Riley families of Prospect and Lower Prospect. Some of these people have been identified by the names written above the photo in the album. Unfortunately some of the photos fell out and so identification of these photos has been done by comparing the people in the photos to the names written above blank slots in the album, as well as by comparing them with the other pictures in the album.

Margaret McGrath
The name Margaret McGrath was written above this photo containing a woman and a man in uniform. The photo was taken in Valletta, Malta where the man in uniform was obviously stationed. We are assuming that the woman is Margaret McGrath. If that's the case we believe that she is Margaret McGrath d/o Michael McGrath and Elizabeth Dadden (Duggan?). Her sister was Elizabeth McGrath she married into the Riley family of Prospect. Margaret was born on 31 October 1858 in Prospect. We don't have anymore information on her after her birth.
Mary McGrath
Mary McGrath was labeled above this picture. She was the daughter of Michael McGrath and Elizabeth Dadden (Duggan) and sister to the above Margaret McGrath and Elizabeth (McGrath) Riley. She was born in 1846 in Prospect and baptized at OLMC Roman Catholic Church on 13 July 1846 . We have no more information about her after her baptism.
Frank Saul
This was one of the empty slots! It was labeled Frank Saul who we believe was Francis Saul s/o Francis (1793 to 1867) and Mary (1806 to 1898) Saul. He was born in about 1841 in Prospect. He married Ellen Kavanagh d/o John and Alice (Shea) Kavanagh in Prospect on 3 August 1869 .
Charity Saul
This was labeled above the tin type that was in the slot below. The only Charity Saul that we have record of is Charity d/o James and Mary (Ryan) Saul, she was born in 1833 and baptized at OLMC on 14 July 1833 . We have no information about her after her baptismal.
Mrs. Calahan
This was another empty slot. The only Mrs. Calahan we have that is connected with the Saul family is Catherine (Barber) Calahan, sister to Mary Ann (Barber) Saul wife of Lawrence Saul. Catherine was the daughter of Edward Barber and Elizabeth Wallace. She was born in 1834 and baptized at OLMC on 1 September 1834 . She married Joseph Calahan s/o William Calahan and Isabel Marshall on 10 May 1858 in Prospect. They had two children.
Bessie Calahan and her brother Jim
These names were labeled above the photo in the slot below. Bessie or Eliza Calahan was the d/o Joseph Calahan and Catherine Barber. She was born in about 1865 in Prospect. Her brother James was born in about 1861. We have no information on either of these people after their birth.
Bessie Calahan
This is a photo of the above mentioned Eliza Calahan d/o Joseph Calahan and Catherine Barber only a little bit older.
Lorey Saul
This is a tin type picture of Edward Lawrence Saul s/o Lawrence Saul and Mary Anne Barber. He was born in about 1851 in Prospect. He married Mary Elizabeth Norris d/o Richard Norris and Elizabeth Martin of Lower Prospect on 10 March 1885 .
Minnie Norris
Mary Elizabeth Norris d/o Richard Norris and Elizabeth Martin was born in Lower Prospect on 15 June 1857 . She married the above mentioned Lawrence Saul s/o Lawrence Saul and Mary Anne Barber.
Tomis Purcell
The only Thomas Purcell that we have documentation on with connection to anyone in this photo album is Thomas Purcell s/o Patrick Purcell and Mary Martin. Thomas was born in about 1812 on Purcell's Island in Prospect Bay. He married Johanna Power d/o John Power and Mary Mullins on 1 March 1832 at St. Peter's RC Church in Dartmouth. They had 12 children one of which Michael married Elizabeth McGrath d/o Michael McGrath and Elizabeth Dadden (Duggan). She married Michael after her first husband Thomas Riley died.
Loury Saul and William Horne
Lawrence Saul has already been written about above. William Horne s/o Jeremiah Horne and Lucy Duggan was born in 1846 in Prospect. He was baptized at OLMC on 7 August 1846 . He a lady by the name of Ellen Cox in 1867, but she died sometime between then and 1874 when he married Catherine McGrath d/o Michael McGrath and Elizabeth Dadden (Duggan).
Mrs. Calahan and Her son Jim
Both people have been explained above.
Mary Anne Saul
Mary Ann Barber d/o Edward Barber and Elizabeth Wallace was born in Prospect in about 1828. She married Lawrence Saul s/o Edward Saul and Catherine Mullins on 25 November 1852 at OLMC . They had nine children. Mary Anne died on 31 August 1910 in Halifax.
Michael Duggan
Now the following is just a theory but hear me out! We believe that this Michael Duggan was the half brother of Mary Anne and Catherine Barber. Their mother Elizabeth Dadden (Duggan) was married to a Michael Dadden (Duggan) who died in bef 1828. in 1822 they had a son Michael Dadden (Duggan) who died on 19 November 1969 in Prospect. I believe that Elizabeth Wallace married a man by the name of Michael Duggan not Dadden. When he died the widowed Elizabeth Duggan married Edward Barber making this Michael Duggan the half brother of Mary Anne and Catherine. Does that make sense?
Lawrence Riley
Lawrence Riley s/o Thomas Riley and Elizabeth McGrath was born in about 1862 in Prospect. I have no more information on him after that date.
Mr. Dulenty
We don't know who this man is or what connection he had with anyone in this photo album.
Michael Power
Don't know anything about this person other than their name.
Kate Crease
Don't know anything about this person.

Unknown Photos

The following photos are ones that have fallen out of the photo album and who we weren't able to identify. I have my theories that the two older men shown below are either Mr.Dulenty or Thomas Purcell. One of the women could be Mrs.Calahan. We don't know and can only speculate.

Unknown Woman 01
This photo was actually done on glass. It appears that the picture was projected on glass and then a black film was painted on the back and the picture appeared. This Woman is unknown to us. We know nothing about her.
Unknown Woman 02
This photo was taken in the early 1860s circa 1861ish. We know nothing about this woman.
Unknown Woman 03
We know nothing about this woman.
Unknown Woman 04
We know nothing about this woman.
Unknown Man 01
This photo was also done on glass. The black film on the back of the glass had been scrapped off so the image which was on the glass itself was only visible when put against something dark.
Unknown Man 02
This is one of the men I believe to be either Thomas Purcell or Mr. Dulenty.
Unknown Man 03
This is the other man I believe to be either Thomas Purcell or Mr. Dulenty.
Unknown Soldier
This person we know nothing about.
