This picture is of a class circa 1940. The women of the village took this class during the war to learn basic things like sewing, and so on. This picture was contributed by Kathleen (Doherty) Coolen.

After completing the course the women were rewarded with a cooking diploma and home decoration diploma . These were given to my great-grandmother Marian Doherty.

Atlantic Memorial Elementary School

In 1959 Our Lady of Mount Carmel school was combined with other small schools around the area. This school was called Atlantic Memorial Elementary School. It is located in Shad Bay and is named after the S.S. Atlantic which sunk off the shore of Lower Prospect (Terrence Bay) in 1877. This photo is a picture of the first board of Parent/Teachers in October 1960 . It was called Home and School Association then.
