We first find the name Nicholas Connett in a document in Mason Co., KY in September 1796, when his brother William Connett passed away. This document states that Nicholas Connett appointed William Bean, his father-in-law and trusted friend, as executor of his brother William Connett's estate.
The next we find of Nicholas Connett is when he is listed on a marriage application for 20-Mar-1823 in Bracken Co., KY to Amelia (Bonwell) Stites. We don't know if they actually married or not, or what became of his wife Ms. Bean and this Amelia.
We then find Nicholas marrying again:
Campbell Co.(KY) Marriages by Worrel
CONNETT, Nicholas & Susannah Baker, 6 Dec. 1824,
married by Richard Tarvin, Bond John Grant.
(note: a later return by Tarvin gives the marriage date as 21 Nov. 1824).
This Susannah Baker was actually Susannah Gatton, widow of John Baker. Susannah Gatton and John Baker were married on 28-Aug-1816 in Pendleton Co., KY.
The next time we find Nicholas Connett anywhere, he is listed in the Fayette Co., OH census in 1830 living in Concord Twp. and he is age 60-70. Then, he is in the tax list for 1834 and in the 1835 tax list, Nicholas is living in Concord Twp., Fayette Co., OH and has 3 horses and 1 cattle.
After this, we find nothing of Nicholas Connett. It is believe he died in Fayette Co., OH between 1835 and 1837, as his daughter Naomi stated that she was left an orphan at a tender age and was raised by her brother.
Naomi married the first time in April of 1837 when she was age 16. This is what leads us to believe her father Nicholas passed away between 1835 (when he is on the tax list) and 1837 (when young Naomi is marrying).
It is probable that Nicholas Connett moved from KY to OH between December 1824 (when he married Susannah Gatton Baker) and January 1826 (when his son Joseph seems to be the first of his children marrying in Fayette Co., OH).
In the 1840 census, we find his family in various places, and Nicholas, it appears, is nowhere to be found. His wife Susannah is living in Wayne Co., IN with 4 males and 3 females. It now seems that Susannah and Nicholas had more children together than we have been able to find. We are aware of a daughter Emily and son Benjamin Franklin for certain, and it is probable that they also had a daughter named Elizabeth, but there is no document found as yet to prove Elizabeth was their daughter. As for the others in this census with Susannah, we do not yet know who they are.
Most of the rest of Nicholas' family are found in Kosciusko Co., IN in the 1840 census, with exception of son Joseph who was for some reason living in Grant Co., IN and William who lived in Tippecanoe Co., IN. James, Abraham, Isaac and Naomi all lived in Kosciusko Co. Also, there was an alleged daughter named Sarah that we don't seem to be able to find anywhere after she married in Fayette Co., OH in 1833 to a Jared Marpole.
After 1840, the family seemed to drift in various directions. Some remained in Indiana for awhile, some went west to Iowa. Eventually they spread even further, and now we are looking for all of our lost cousins out there.
So now, let's check out the children of Nicholas Connett.
