PLEASE READ
  1. To keep the file sizes small, each district is divided into single microfilm page numbers. If the family for whom you are searching is at the top or the bottom of the page, BE SURE to check the preceeding or following page. Sometimes families are split across pages.
  2. The census was transcribed as is. Sometimes the household numbers within a district are out of order.
  3. The "Comments" section may contain helpful notations, including the following:
    • 10 means "Married within the year"
    • 11 means "Attended school within the year"
    • 12 means "Persons over 20 years of age who cannot read or write"
    • 13 means "Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper, or convict"
    • Black
    • Mulatto

The 1850 census index allows you to look up your ancestor alphabetically. After you locate the person for whom you are searching, BE SURE and NOTE the microfilm page number. Return to this page using your back key or one of the return links. Then, find the microfilm page number in the "District/Page Number Order" list found below. Link to that page.
