State of Tennessee, Sumner County - June 26, 1893

Be it remembered that at a Circuit Court began and held in the town of Gallatin at the Court House for the County of Sumner on the 4th Monday in June 1893, and of the American Independence the one hundred and seventeenth present and presiding the Honorable A. H. Munford, Judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit of the State of Tennessee when Court was opened according to law and the following proceeding were had: and entered of record, W. A. McGlothlin Sheriff of Sumner County, Tennessee returned into open Court the State's writ of Venire Facias issued to and directed to him by the County Court of said Sumner County and by him as such Sheriff duly executed upon the following named persons:

Woodford Dunn, J. N. Mitchener, W. C. Patterson, J. A. Mentloe, G. N. Guthrie, T. S. Vinson, W. A. Chapman, Geo. G. Bryson, John D. Cage, L. C. Armstead, C. W. McCoy, T. Combs, B. F. Perry, A. G. Dugger, Frank Brigance, L. Hoffman, R. B. Wright, A. J. Clark, J. F. Coley, W. J. Davidson, Monroe Perdue, G. O. Wilkerson, Martin Link, J. W. Goostree, J. M. Groves, all of whom answered to their names except W. J. Davidson, Geo. Bryson and J. A. Mentloe who were excused by the Court and Milton Carver & G. T. Yates and A. E. Frakes were chosen by the Court in their room and stead and thereupon from said venire as supplied there was selected the following named persons to serve as Grand Jury at the present term of Court being drawn by lot from a hat by a boy under ten years of age to wit: A. J. Clark, Millon Carver, W. C. Patterson, A. G. Dugger, Woodford Dunn, J. N. Mitchener, T. S. Vinson, L. Hoffman, R. B. Wright, C. W. McCoy, Monroe Perdue, Jno. Cage, and G. N. Guthrie, all good and lawful men of Sumner County, Tennessee from whom W. C. Patterson was selected and appointed as foreman

and said Grand Jury having in all things been elected, impaneled, sworn according to law and charged by the Court returned to their room to consider of Indictments and presentments and J. F. Cooley a Constable of Sumner County, Tenn. was sworn to according to law to attend them.

J. H. Wood vs. J. A. and Thos. Stratton

This cause was this day heard upon the motion of the plaintiff to dismiss the appeal in the cause for the reason that no appeal bond has been given and it appearing to the Court that no bond for the bond has been given, it is ordered by the Court that the appeal be dismissed and the judgment of the justice below affirmed and the plaintiff will recover of the defendants J. A. Stratton and Thos. Stratton the sum of $35.00 thirty five dollars as principal and one dollar and eighty five cents as interest and the costs of this cause for all of which execution will issue a lien is hereby declared for reasonable fees of Dismukes & Seay.

Dr. T. M. & L. M. Woodson vs. J. D. Taylor - J. B. Alexander, Trustee vs. J. D. Taylor - Peyton & Allen vs. J. D. Taylor - N. L. Fitchen & Co. vs. J. D. Taylor

In the above styled cases it appearing that the judgments & Costs in each has been paid since the last term of this Court, it is therefore ordered that these cases be dismissed.

Geo. W. Davis and Wife vs. Western U. Telegraph Co. - This case was this day continued by consent until the next term of this Court.

G. W. Womack vs. John Jones - This case was this day continued  as upon application of Defendant until the next term of this Court.

B. W. Johnson vs. Western Union Telegraph Co. - This case was this day continued by consent until the next term of this Court.

Florence Cummings vs. Wm. Edwards - This case was this day continued as on affidavit of Plaintiff until the next term of this Court.

John T. Carter, Administrator vs. E. B. Turpin - This case was this day continued by consent until the next term of this Court.

B. B. Frazier vs. L. & N. RR Co. - This case was this day continued by consent until the next term of this Court.

John Caruthers vs. Western Union Telegraph Co and Cumberland Telephone Co. - This case was this day continued by consent until the next term of this Court.

Reeves & Co. vs. Dugger and Stark - This case was this day continued by consent until the next term of this Court.

Pierce Stratton & Mitchener vs. Jas. O. Baber - Came the parties to this cause and also the following Jury of good and lawful men of Sumner County to wit: Martin Link, B. F. Perry, L. C. Armstead, G. T. Yates, J. F. Coley, T. Combs, Frank Brigance, G. O. Wilkerson, J. M. Groves, W. A. Chapman, A. E. Frakes, J. W. Goostree, who being duly elected empanelled and sworn to well and truly try the issues joined between the plaintiffs and the defendants and a true verdict render according to the law and evidence who upon their oaths do say they find the issues joined in favor of the plaintiffs and assess their damages at fifty seven dollars and sixty cents. It is therefore considered by the Court that the plaintiffs recover of the defendants the said sum of $57.60 as damages, and on motion it is further ordered by the Court that plaintiffs recover of the defendants Jas. Baber and R. K. Gillespie security and his appeal bond the cost of this case. Let execution will issue against defendant for said judgment and execution issue against defendant and R. K. Gillespie for cost.

Court thereupon adjourned until tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. A. H. Munford, Judge

June 27, 1893

Court met pursuant to adjournment present and presiding the Honorable A. H. Minford, Judge.

The Grand Jurors for the State returned here into open Court in a body the following Indictments and presentments to wit:

A presentment against T. M. Lanier for misdemeanor.
An Indictment against John Sanders (col.) for carrying weapons.
An Indictment against Alex Sanders (col.) for carrying weapons.
An Indictment against Taylor Buntin (col.) for carrying weapons.

An Indictment against John Sanders (col.) for felonious assault in the following words and figures to wit:
State of Tennessee, Circuit Court June Term 1893, Sumner County
The Grand Jurors for the State upon their oath present that John Sanders (col.) heretofore on the 10th day of June 1893, in said Sumner County and State of Tennessee unlawfully and feloniously made as assault in and upon the body of one Stephen Douglass (col.) with a pistol and shot at him the said Stephen Douglass (col.) with intent then and there unlawfully and feloniously to kill and commit the cause of manslaughter in and upon the body of the said Stephen Douglass (col.) against the peace and dignity of the State. H. C. Carter, Atty. Gen. - A true bill Bob Douglass (col.) prosecutor Mariah Douglass (col.), Stephen Douglass (col.), Jack Mathews sworn by the foreman of the Grand Jury to testify before the Grand Jury on this Indictment this the 26th day of June 1893, W. C. Patterson foreman of the Grand Jury. Summon for the State Mariah Douglass (col.), Stephen Douglass (col.) and Jack Mathews. H. C. Carter, Atty. Gen.

An Indictment against Alex Sanders for felonious assault in the following words and figures to wit:
State of Tennessee, Sumner County - The Grand Jurors for the State upon their oath present that Alex Sanders (col.) heretofore to wit on the 1oth day of June 1893 in said Sumner County and State of Tennessee unlawfully and feloniously made an assault in and upon the body of on Stephen Douglass (col.) with a pistol and shot at him the said Stephen Douglass (col.) with intent then and there unlawfully and feloniously to kill and commit the crime of man slaughter in and upon the body of the said Stephen Douglass (col.) against the peace and dignity of the State. H. C. Carter, Atty. Gen.
A true bill Bob Douglass (col.) prosecutor - Mariah Douglass (col.), Stephen Douglass (col.), Jack Mathews sworn by the foremen of the Grand Jury to testify before the Grand Jury on this Indictment, this the 26th day of June 1893. W. C. Patterson, foreman of the Grand Jury. Summon for the State Mariah Douglass (col.), Stephen Douglass (col.) and Jack Mathews. H. C. Carter, Atty. Gen.

An Indictment against James Minsey for Larceny in the following words and figures to wit:
State of Tennessee, Circuit Court, June Term 1893, Sumner County - The Grand Jurors for the State upon their oath present that James Minsey heretofore to wit on the 10th day of June in the State and County aforesaid unlawfully and feloniously did take, steal and carry away one pair of pants, two vests, two half gallon tin cups, three tin buckets, one molasses stand, and two fruit stands of the personal goods and chattels of one G. D. Duncan to the value of fifteen dollars with intent to deprive the true owner thereof and convert the same to his own

use against the peace and dignity of the State. H. C. Carter, Atty. Gen.

An indictment against Jas. Minsey for Larceny for the chattels from Charley Stamps to the value of eight dollars. And the Grand Jurors upon  their oaths further present

the said James found guilty.

Charles Hunt vs. W. E. Jernigan

Came the parties to this cause and also the following Jury of good and lawful men of Sumner County to wit: Martin Link, B. F. Perry, L. C. Armstead, G. T. Yates, J. F. Coley, T. Combs, Frank Brigance, G. O. Wilkerson, J. M. Groves, W. A. Chapman, A. E. Frakes, and J. W. Goostree who being duly elected empanelled and sworn to well and truly try the issues joined between the Plaintiff and the defendant and a true verdict render according to the law and evidence and not having time to consider of their verdict today were respeted until tomorrow morning.

Court therefore adjourned until tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. A. H. Munford, Judge.
