2nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment (Bates)
Organized May 6, 1861. Mustered into Confederate Service at Lynchburg, Virginia. May 12, 1861.

Immediately after being mustered into Confederate service the regiment was under fire at Aquia Creek, Virginia on June 1, 1861 in less than 30 days after organization. Then it was sent down the Rappahonnuck River, this expedition resulting in the capture of two Federal ships loaded with supplies.
Was present at Manasas but not heavily engaged, then to what is now Quantico, Virginia where they re-enlisted for three years or the duration of the war. Proceeded to Knoxville, Tennessee onto Huntsville, Alabama then Corinth, Mississippi and finally the bloody battle at Shiloh.
The 2nd entered Shiloh with 385 effectives. Colonel Bate was wounded during the first days fighting and Lieutenant Colonel Goodall assumed the command.
During the two days fighting of April 6th and 7th, 1862, the regiment lost 235 men killed, wounded or missing. This was almost 65% of the regiment.
In the second days fighting the regiment was combined with troops of General Stewart's Brigade.
Colonel Bate was promoted to brigadier general and later to major general and never did resume command of the regiment. Lieutenant Colonel Goodall resigned and Captain John A. Butler was elected Lieutenant Colonel. He commanded until the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky where he was killed.
The regiment remained in Cleburne's Brigade until just before the battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. During this time the regiment took part in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi then retreated to Tupelo, Mississippi and then to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
When Bragg started his invasion of Kentucky the 2nd was detached to operate with General E. Kirby Smith in the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky. At Richmond, Colonel Benjamin J. Hill was in command of the regiment. They entered the battle with 300 men and lost 112 including Lieutenant Colonel John A. Butler.
The brigade then rejoined Bragg's Army to take part in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky on October 8, 1862 under the command of its Senior Captain C. P. Moore. They then retreated to Knoxville, Tennessee where Captain W. D. Robinson was elected Colonel and W. J. Hale, Lieutenant Colonel Robinson remained in command until he was wounded at Jonesboro, Georgia. He was its last Colonel.
The regiment was then moved to Shelbyville and College Grove, Tennessee prior to the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 31, 1862, where it lost sixty-three killed, wounded and or missing.
The 2nd wintered at Tullahoma, Tennessee then guarded the Railroad south of Tullahoma then retreated with the rest of Bragg's army to Chattanooga, Tennessee when they were flanked out of Middle Tennessee.
The regiment then took part in the battles of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Ringgold Gap. It entered the Battle of Chickamauga with 264 men and lost 159 in causalities. At Ringgold Gap it had 133 men and lost nine. Lieutenant Colonel William J. Hale was commanding.
Early in 1864 the regiment was ordered to Mississippi to re-enforce General Polk but on getting as far as Montgomery, Alabama the unit was ordered to return to Dalton, Georgia. From April until August the 2nd was almost constantly engaged in battle and skirmishes all the way down to Atlanta, Georgia. At Peachtree Creek, Lieutenant Colonel Hale and two companies of forty men were captured. In July 1864 the regiment was transferred from Polk's Brigade of Cleburne's Division to Tyler's Brigade of Bate's Division. Thus returning to the command of its first Colonel. The Brigade now consisted of the 2nd, 10th, 15th, 20th, 30th, and 37th Tennessee Regiments, 37th Georgia, and 4th Georgia Battalion of Sharpshooters, Brigadier General Thomas Benton Smith commanding. At the Battle of Jonesboro, Colonel W. D. Robinson was wounded and Major William Driver killed.
The regiment was with General Hood on his desperate invasion of Tennessee suffering greatly at Franklin, Tennessee on November 30th and being virtually annihilated at Nashville, Tennessee on December 15 and 16 having only sixty-five men left. It retreated with the remnants of Hood's Army to Mississippi and was transferred to North Carolina fighting at Bentonville, North Carolina and losing its last Regimental Commander, Major W. H. Wilkinson.
In the final reorganization the 2nd was consolidated with the 3rd, 1Oth, 15th, 18th, 20th, 26th, 30th, 32nd, 37th, 45th Tennessee Infantry Regiments and the 23rd Tennessee Battalion to form the 4th Consolidated Regiment of Tennessee Infantry, Palmer's Brigade Colonel Anderson Searcy commanding.
Lieutenant Edward L. Drake of Company K, 2nd Regiment was elected Lieutenant Colonel. They were surrendered May 1, 1865 after exactly four years service all active.
It would not be fitting to omit mentioning the part William Brimmage Bate of Castalian Springs, Sumner County had in being the main figure in raising the Second Tennessee Infantry There were two Second Tennessee Infantry Regiments raised but owing to the fact that the regiment raised by Colonel Bate was the second recognized by the Confederate Government it became officially the Second Tennessee. The other was raised in Memphis, Tennessee by J. Knox Walker.
Colonel Bate bestowed upon the regiment the name "Walker Legion" in honor of L. P. Walker, Confederate Secretary of War.
General Bate served in the Mexican War, then studied law at Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tennessee. When the Civil War began, General Bates enlisted as a private in a company being raised at Gallatin, Tennessee and became its Captain and later was elected Colonel of the regiment. When the one year's term of enlistment was about to expire, so great was the influence of Colonel Bate that the entire regiment re-enlisted for three years or the duration. Not one man refused. After serving in Virginia for a time, Colonel Bate was given a choice of the army in which to continue service. Naturally he selected the Army of Tennessee. When the transfer was made Colonel Bate gave the entire regiment a sixty days furlough. Before this expired, the battle of Shiloh being imminent the regiment voluntarily hastened to report. At Shiloh, Colonel Bate was severely wounded but continued to lead and cheer on his men until loss of blood caused him to drop his bridle reins then his horse was shot from under him.
The surgeons decided that his only chance for recovery was amputation of his badly shattered leg. He over ruled the decision of his surgeons knowing that with only one leg he would not be able to continue his service to his country. He returned to the army on crutches as a Brigadier General.
At Shiloh, he had a brother, brother-in-law and a cousin killed and another cousin wounded. Five members of one family in one battle. I wonder how many families can equal that record.
General Bate was afterwards twice wounded while still so crippled from his first wound that he had to be helped to mount his horse. He had three horses killed beneath him at Chickamauga, Tennessee. At Bentonville, North Carolina when the surrender came he dismounted from his horse, hobbled on his crutches to the remnant of his old 2nd Tennessee to surrender with them.
What else could have been expected for he was born in sight of the location of Old Bledsoe's Station, the scene of so many encounters between our early settlers and the Indians. In sight of the sycamore tree in which lived one summer Thomas Sharp Spencer, who cultivated the first corn ever grown by a white man in Sumner County. With this background it was but a natural course of events.
While this is not a history of "the greats" of the Civil War but rather given to mention of the private soldier and in as many cases as possible, a brief statement of what happened to him, I would like to include two true stories concerning Colonel Bate.
Colonel Bate had a younger brother, Captain Humphrey Bate to whom he was very much attached. During a lull in the fighting at Shiloh the two brothers met and while they were conversing the Colonel asked for a light for his cigar from the cigar which his brother was smoking, and as he was in the act of lighting the cigar, Captain Humphrey Bate received a mortal wound from the enemy and died in a few hours. Colonel Bate was often seen with cigars in his mouth afterwards, but never lighted one as long as he lived.
At the battle of Chickamauga, Tennessee General Bate's command was waiting orders while under a heavy artillery fire from the enemy. Major John C. Thompson of General Stewart's staff brought the order and as he reached the General he raised his hand in salute and began delivering the order, when a cannon ball passed through General Bate's horse and he and the horse went to the ground together. General Bate struggled to his feet with the aid of his crutch which he was still using as a result of the wound received at Shiloh and found the cool and daring Thompson still standing at salute, he then finished delivering the order, completing the partly finished sentence that was so rudely interrupted by the cannon ball, which had, or took, the right of way regardless of courtesy.

Golman D. Brevard - 3rd Lieutenant, 2nd Lieutenant on May 14, 1862. Resigned and enlisted in Company B, 7th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion, later 2nd or 22nd Cavalry, which see.
Charles P. Moore - 1st Sergeant, Captain on April 3, 1862, replacing Captain Henry. Killed at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 31, 1862.
William H. Saunders - 2nd Sergeant, 2nd Lieutenant on April 3, 1862. Captain on January 8, 1863 replacing Captain Moore. Wounded at Ringgold Gap, Georgia on November 27, 1863, during retreat from Missionary Ridge. Detailed to care for the baggage of General Johnson.
Allen W. Lipscomb - 3rd Sergeant. Transferred to Company G, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry where he became 2nd Lieutenant on June 13, 1862. Was captured at Corinth, Mississippi, on August 19, 1862.
Pleasant G. C. Henry - 4th Sergeant. Transferred to Day's unlettered company of the 44th Tennessee Infantry and was killed at Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862.
Gilbert L. Siddons - 1st Corporal. Transferred to Company G, 2nd or 22nd Tennessee Cavalry on June 15, 1862.
John W. Hoffman - Listed present thru March 1, 1864.
Alexander C. Hogan - 3rd Corporal. Transferred to Company I, 9th Tennessee Cavalry and was captured at Salineville, Ohio on July 26, 1863, and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio and forwarded to Camp Douglas, Illinois.

Adams, James B. - Discharged on disability on November 21, 1862. Captured as a deserter by U.S. forces in Macon County, Tennessee on November 30, 1863. Sent to Camp Chase, Ohio.

Humphrey Bate - Captain. Killed at Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862. During a lull in the fighting he met his brother, Colonel William B. Bate, and while talking over the battle, was in the act of giving Colonel Bate a light from his cigar when he was mortally wounded.
Scott Davis - 1st Lieutenant. Enlisted May 6, 1861. Then enlisted on June 18, 1861 in Captain David W. Alexander's company of independent cavalry. This forced his resignation from Company K which he did on November 22, 1861. Was sent to Virginia, participated in the Cheat Mountain Campaign. Spent the winter of 1861-62 at Warm Springs and Alum Springs, Virginia. Transferred to McLemore's 4th Tennessee Cavalry and was in all its battles from Readyville, Tennessee to Bentonville, North Carolina.

James W. Roberson - 2nd Corporal. Bvt. 2nd Lieutenant on April 10, 1862. Wounded at Shiloh April 6, 1862 by bayonet in right eye. Lost eye. Wounded at Murfreesboro, Tennessee by shell fragments in top of head and in right arm on December 31, 1862.
Joseph M. Crenshaw - 3rd Corporal. Captured at Hartsville, Tennessee on November 10, 1862. Exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on November 22, 1862. On detached service getting mules for the army. Detailed as Wagon Master, January 15, 1863 getting forage while in winter quarters at Dalton, Georgia in winter of 1863-64.

Unable to feed himself. Furloughed indefinitely. Returned to regiment on July 19, 1864 and was discharged on disability.
Bate, William B. - Elected Colonel of the regiment. Made Brigadier General. Then Major General. Wounded severely at Shiloh on April 6,1862. Both bones in left leg broken and arteries severed. Doctors said his leg must be amputated. He refused and kept his pistol under his pillow to prevent its being done. Did not see his old command until much later in the war, then not as Colonel but Brigadier General.

Hamilton, John L. - Wounded slightly eight times. Seriously wounded in right thigh at Richmond, Kentucky on August 30, 1862. Knocked down at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863 by shell striking gun, breaking right shoulder and shattering shoulder joint and upper right arm. In hospital at Atlanta, Georgia for six months. On way home with broken shoulder was captured on November 7, 1864. He escaped on November 10, 1864. Captured again at Columbia, Tennessee and kept in prison three days. Given choice of a northern prison or taking the oath. He chose to take the Oath. He was from Fountain Head.

Stone, Moses B. H. - 1st Sergeant on April 10, 1862. Wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. Listed as deserted.
Stone, James M. - Detailed as Forage Master on February 10, 1863 by order of General Polk. Then detailed as ambulance driver. Detailed to Supply Train on February 19, 1864, in the Quartermaster Department by order of General Johnston.
Stone, John W. - 2nd Corporal on April 10, 1862. Regimental Color Guard. Wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. He was given a forty day furlough on October 21, 1863. He was paroled in North Carolina on May 6, 1865.
Suddarth, James N. - Recorded as absent behind enemy lines.
Sutherland, Alexander R. - Bvt. 2nd Lieutenant on April 3, 1862. Wounded in right leg at Richmond, Kentucky on August 30, 1862. Leg amputated. Died from the wound.
Terry, John H. W. - Detailed as sharpshooter to use the imported Whitworth rifle from England by orders of General Cleburne. In battles at Shiloh, Richmond, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Ringgold Gap, Rocky Faced Ridge, Dalton and Kennesaw Mountain. Wounded in right leg on skirmish line at Richmond, Kentucky then severely in breast. Wounded slightly at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 19, 1863. Wounded severely in left leg at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on September 20, 1864. In hospital at Cuthbert, Georgia til the end of the war. On crutches some time after the war. Leg ulcerated and never did heal properly.

Webb, William D. - Wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. Captured at Gallatin, Tennessee on December 15, 1864. This poor fellow was one of many trying to visit home during Hood's invasion of Tennessee. Sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois.
Wilks, John Talbas - In battles at Shiloh, Richmond Perryville, Murfreesboro, and Chickamauga. Wounded five times. Wounded at Richmond, Kentucky on August 30, 1862 in arm below elbow. Wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863 through shoulder and through thigh, shattering bone. Sent to hospital at Atlanta, Georgia. Given sick furlough from hospital on April 4, 1864. Never able for field service again but remained to the end. Paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 11, 1865. Made 3rd Corporal on May 10, 1862.

Wright, Robert Barr - Wounded at Shiloh on April 6, 1862 through right ankle joint causing permanent disability. Offered a discharge on disability. Refused it. On detached service as Teamster and Wagon Master through 1863-65. Then Acting Quartermaster pressing stock for army use. Paroled in Alabama on May 12, 1865. See note end of company history.

In addition to being seriously wounded at Shiloh, Robert Barr Wright had his life saved by a Minnie ball striking a double cased silver watch in his pocket. This watch, still showing the dent, is proudly owned now by a descendent, Jule Simpson, now living in the Rock Bridge Community of Sumner County.
In all these Civil War records a lot of so-called desertions will be noticed. True, there were desertions, but due consideration must be given to the fact that records were lost or captured, men scattered, or left on the battlefield killed wounded or captured, and because they were not present to answer at roll call, were marked deserted. Neither did they have men or paper for such work.
