In giving this record of the companies composing the 30th Tennessee Infantry, we have tried to avoid some needless repetition, such as the date of surrender at Fort Donelson and the date of exchange at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

After three days of bitter fighting to open an escape route to Nashville, Tennessee which route was opened on two successive days before the men were shamefully surrendered on February 16, 1862.

The Field Officers had been imprisoned at Fort Warren, Massachusetts the Line Officers at Johnson's Island, Ohio, the Non-Commissioned and privates where at Camp Butler, Illinois near Springfield.

The officers were a few days in advance of the men to be ready to receive and reorganize the regiment which was sadly depleted by death in prison, by men taking the Oath of Allegiance to get out of prison and so escape what seemed most certain death and by some that had left Fort Donelson during the battle and after the surrender and by another group that just disappeared upon arriving at Vicksburg.

Included in this narrative is a description of conditions at Camp Butler and a report made by U.S. Army Officers appointed to investigate the conditions causing the terrible death rate among the prisoners.

Conditions were improved somewhat before the regiment was exchanged but too late to save the lives of many brave Confederates. Belonging in Company E above, information obtained later. Woodall, James L. - Captured at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. He took the Oath at Camp Butler, Illinois in September 1862, just before the exchange.

All through regimental histories of Confederate soldiers we notice relatives enlisting in the same companies and regiments.

There is a very noticeable difference in different companies taking the Oath to get out of prison. There were no officers with them to exert an influence. Were some quarters more exposed than others?

Several died on the way to Camp Butler, or soon after arrival. They had lain in the trenches at Fort Donelson all night in a snow storm with no fires allowed on the night before they were surrendered. This exposure, coupled with exposure on the way to prison, and the way in which they were transported, some of them being wounded caused many unnecessary deaths.

The Confederate Government at Richmond, Virginia, passed a non-conscript law that exempted from military service those under eighteen and over fifty. Putting this law into effect caused the loss of thousands of men already trained and battle tried.

Later on in the war the morale of the Confederate army was badly hurt by a law passed exempting from military service those that owned twenty or more slaves. The majority of Confederate soldiers had volunteered because they considered States Rights infringed upon. This law was called by some a law making it a "Rich Man's War and a Poor Man's Fight." This law, with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves, put entirely different ideas into the minds of many.
