 Austin Surratt
of Rockville, Parke Co., IN. was killed under a train on the Big Four track here early this morning after he had started home from to this city. He worked for Charles Pfeffenberger here for several months, summer before last and came over Sunday morning to visit friends. He attempted to leave Sunday night on the Big Four's westbound train but at two o'clock this morning his body, horribly mangled, was found lying on the track opposite the point where the steam shovel is located, a couple of hundred yards, west of the Big Four Depot. It is presumed he fell from the train under the wheels.
The body was taken to Ledbetter and Dentman (?) undertaking rooms and prepared for burial. Coroner King notified Surratt's family at Terre Haute, who are said to be excellent people.
The Next day: "From the Greencastle Banner" 22 Oct. 1902
The body of Austin Surratt was buried here Wednesday afternoon, instead of being taken to Terre Haute, which was his nominal home. The family have (sic) no dead interred in this part of the country and preferred that Austin's body remain here rather than move him.
"His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Surratt,
his sisters,
Mrs. D.V. Brittin, of Terre Haute, IN.

 Possible Record Problem!
[Note: 1.]  I don't think the JAHRIES moved to California for several years because Leah managed Valeska's "Hat Boutique" in the Hotel Deming here in Terre Haute for the 1914-1915 timeframe. [REF: Mike #2]
[Note: 2.]  John M. Jahries died in Los Angeles on Sept. 21, 1953. Though I am presuming for the time being this is the same man who married Leah, the obit asserts that he leaves a widow, Zita Caughlin also formerly of Terre Haute. Zita (Caughlin) Jahries died on October 1961 but I have not yet examined her obituary. Mike McCormick (Occupation: Scenic Designer) [REF: Mike #2] and [REF: Mike #3]

Many of the newsreels seen in movie theaters on Alaska were his work. DOD: 07/22/1950 Age 59 years. Died under mysterious circumstance. Coroner's jury determined it was an accident. He was U.S. Commisioner since 1934. He was also a photographer, filming various happenings around Alaska for news bureaus: Pathe Film Corp., Lathrop Corp., Paramount. He produced a film on the Stikine River which he showed at Wrangell. He filmed the arrival of the U.S. Army planes, Black Wolf Squadron, in 1920.
Spouse: Mildred Sylvester Suratt, daughter of Rufus and Rose Sylvester.
Son: Richard, Jr.
Sister: Valeska SURRAT, a movie actress (known by George Burns and Gracie Allen I have discovered!!).
Interestingly, Austin "Cap" Lathrop, of Lathrop Corporation died about the same time in Fairbanks.
