Bio  *Harper J. Sarrett as a "*teenager in GA" fought in the last of the 5 Seminole Indian Wars, then struck off towards Texas alone to seek his fortune. He made it as far as Utica, [Hinds Co.] MS, known as "Cane Ridge" at the time, on his way West and meet his match in a young lady named Miss Frances Brown, daughter of William and Martha Lee Brown. They married and he stayed, and became Utica's Undertaker, Cabinetmaker, part-time Postmaster, farmer, and first Mayor when the town incorporated in 1880 (people had already lived here 100 years by then). Mrs Frances (Brown) SARRETT, was Utica's first public School Teacher in 1852, on land deeded her by Matthew BROOME, and that was the site of Utica's public school until 1994 when the county closed the school down and now busses all the kids to Raymond.
      The SARRETTS had a huge family and many descendants, but finding SARRETT ancestors has not been easy. The BROWNS and SARRETTS and a lot of their relatives are buried in an old cemetery on my farm behind my house, and the first burial with a gravestone was in 1813. Later generations are buried at Utica, and many connections moved on to Texas after the Civil War. It is "lost" connections like these that make genealogy so interesting.
This is a story about the first mayor of Utica who was "passing through" just to give you an idea of how these things happen.

      Error #1. H.J. name is "Harmon Jackson" not "*Harper J."
      Error #2. H.J. was never a "*Teenager" from GA. he was born in Rutherford Co., NC. and was raised in Eastern Cherokee Territory, present-day Cocke Co., TN. He did not go to Ellijay, Gilmar Co., Georgia until he was 20 years old. [Oct. 1837]

N.American Profile 1980 book  Based on his 22 Aug. 1892, Claim for Pension, the 75 year old Harmon "Jackson" SARRETT, while living in Mississippi, filed for an "Indian War Pension", which was granted Pension No. SC-1761,
 The following is abstracted from that:
     H. "Jackson SARRETT", age 20 enlisted in Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia, as a Private and served, 6 Months (06 Oct. 1837 to 07 May 1838) in the 1st. Regiment, of Captain James CODY Company, of the Georgia Mounted Volunteers, Commanded by General C. H. NELSON during the "SEMINOLES, Florida Indian War", when he was discharged at "Camp Bull, Georgia". The description, he gave at the time of his enlistment, was that he was 5 feet, 10 inches tall; Blue eyes, Auburn hair, with Fair complexion and that he was a Farmer."
     Since the close of the War of 1812 (1812-1814) to the Mexican War, (1846-1848) the Federal Government was engaged in a policy of moving the Indians to territories West of the Mississippi River. [The Indian Wars lasted from 1817 to 1858] The U.S. Congress Act of 28 May, 1830. The removal of the Northern Indian tribes presented no particular difficulty, but with the tribes in the South it was a different story, and removal could not be accomplished by legislation alone. Here lived the Cherokees, Creeks, Chickasaws, Choctaws, and the Seminoles, collectively known as the "Five Civilized Tribes".
     The Seminoles of Florida were assembled and removed only after bitter intermittent Warfare, which lasted from 1835 to 1842 and caused much dissension in Army circles.
     First Seminole War, 1817-1818.
     Second Seminole War, 1835-1842.
     After the "Indian War" Service in May of 1838 H. "Jackson" SARRETT age 21 went back to Florida and lived there until 1841, then went to Florence, [Lauderdale Co.] Alabama, thence to Texas in the Spring of 1842, thence to this place (Utica, Hinds Co., Mississippi) in March 1844. Thence to Memphis, Tenn. in July 1844, thence to this place (Utica, MS) again in 1845 and had lived here ever since.
     In 1847, he married in Lauderdale Co., MS.

Old Soldier  To Pension Board, letter of 30 Jan. 1893,
 On 30 Jan. 1893, H. "Jackson" SARRETT, responded with a letter to the Pension Board, for more proof of his Service record, with the following:

      "I see that you require me to furnish the testimony of two Comrades who served in the Company with me. I must say that is Un-acceptable as I have not seen any person who served in said (J. CODY'S) for more than 50 years and there were not more than three in said Company that was younger than I.
We mustered out of said service in May 1838 at "Camp Call, Georgia" by General CHURCHILL. I then went back to Florida and lived there until 1841, then went to Florence, [Lauderdale Co.] Alabama, thence to Texas in the Spring of 1842, thence to this place [Utica, Hinds Co., Mississippi] in March 1844. Thence to Memphis, [Shelby Co.] Tenn. in July 1844, thence to this place [Utica, MS.] again in 1845 and have lived here ever since.
I will now give the names of some of the men who composed of Codys Company, 1st. Brigade of Georgia Mounted Volunteers was the name of the Command and Commanded by
     General CHARLES H. NELSON.
     My Company belonged the 1st. Regiment Commanded by
     Col. E. W. CHIRSTAIN.
     JAMES CODY was the Captain;
     R. H. or R. N. CANNON was the First Sergeant;
     JEPTHA B. STEVENS or STEPHENS was Second Lieut;
     N.C. BERRY was Orderly Sergeant.
 I can recollect, but a few of the other members of the Company. The names of those I can recollect are
     JAMES BLACK, JOHN CLAMNTS, BETHEL SUILLIAN (or SUILLEN) and his brother,
     do not recollect his Christian name.
     ELIAL BARNER, W. S.T. SAUSON, one name TURNER and one named
     MADDUX (or MATTUX), and TIMOTHY BRADFORD,
 I believe that is all the names I can recollect. I know no other evidence that can be obtained. About 1850 to 1852, I obtained a Land Warrant for the said Service, through the Agency of JOHN M. JEWELL an Attorney. This is all I can say.

 Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
     In the Civil War, veterans with psychological combat disorders were diagnosed with "Soldier's Heart." In World War I, the term was "Shell Shock" and in World War II "Combat Fatigue." The term "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" was added to official Veterans Affairs' diagnostic codes in the early 1980s.

Source REF:#004 Click on Thumbnail for Source Reference  Carol Brentlinger, Writes on 30 Dec 2007 :
 Dear Paul,
     Harman Jackson Sarrett's daughter Susan Teresa who married Aaron Newman WHITAKER had another daughter we didn't know about. Her name is Carrie WHITAKER and she was born 22 Feb. 1887 in Port Gibson, MS. The only record I can find of a Carrie Whitaker in the 1900 census that might work shows Carrie C. Whitaker born abt 1887 in MS is living as a boarder with William W. Buetow in Police Jury Ward 4 East Baton Rouge, LA. I have not checked for 1910 or 1920 yet. She was married to William Hill and I did find her in the 1930 census for Mill Spring, Wayne, Missouri.
     I met with her daughter Katherine HILL (who has never married) and she gave me the information I have. She had a booklet printed called: "THIS IS MY STORY AND I'M STICKIN' TO IT" published in 2002, and it tells mainly memories but a little genealogy. She wrote this to mark her 91st birthday. The genealogy states that Carrie WHITAKER was born in Port Gibson, Mississippi, on February 22, 1887 to Susan Surrett Whitaker and Aaron Newman Whitaker. She died on December 19, 1964.
     Katherine McKenzie Hill was born in Augusta, [Richmond or Columbia Co.'s] Georgia, on October 5, 1911, to Carrie Charlotte Whitaker HILL and William HILL. William was born in Glasgow, Scotland, around 1872, to Katherine McKenzie HILL and David HILL, and came to the United States as a young man. He worked for the railroad in Augusta, Georgia, for a number of years before moving to Otter Creek. [Wayne Co., MO.] He died in 1936. He mentions a older sister Susie HILL also born in Augusta. Younger brother David HILL, born in Turpin Hill, [Not in Place Name Index?] Georgia. She states that she didn't know this until she read his obituary so I'm not sure if this is correct. She also mentions an older brother Bill HILL who was her half-brother. She doesn't know where he was born and doesn't mention which parent was his full parent. She also mention a boy named Lamar HILL. I haven't found my notes yet, so I can't tell you for sure, but I believe she said this was her sister Susan's boy.
     Have a nice day. Carol Brentlinger, E-Mail: [email protected] (New Address)

 Mrs. LEE DIES AT SON'S HOME
<---Click on Thumbnail for Larger Newspape Clipping!
 Heart Attack Is Fatal To Utica Woman
     Funeral services for Mrs. Maria Elizabeth LEE, 73, who died suddenly at 3:30 this morning, [December 23, 1931] following a hear attack, will be held at the Methodist Church in Utica, her former home at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon, with the Rev. Mr. CASTLE, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Owen WILLIAMS of the Utica Baptist Church.
      Mrs. LEE's death came as a distinct shock to relatives, as she seemed to be in her usual good health yesterday afternoon. A heart attack early in the evening, however, resulted in her death a few hours later.
      The deceased was born and reared in Utica, and made her home there until a year ago, when, with her husband Daniel Thomas LEE, she came to Jackson to live with her son, Fred W. LEE, of 332 Baker Street, where she was when the end came. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Utica.
      Besides her husband, she is survived by one son Fred W. LEE; a sister Mrs. J.E. FORD, of Natchitoches, LA.; and one brother, Dan SARRETT, of Oklahoma.
      Pall bearers are Shelby HUBBARD, Dr. BUTLER, Calhoun HART, Joe FLEWELLYN, C. WILLARD, Reuben PRICE, C.K. LEIGHTTON and a Mr. ROBERTS, all of Utica.
      Interment will be in the Utica Cemetery, with arrangements in charg of Wright and Ferguson.
