Have you ever gone hunting for a family cemetery whose location
description looked like:
"Three and a
quarter miles south of the intersection of SH35 and 1st Street
about 200 feet east of SH35 in a cotton field owned by Fred
Smith." |
You might as well head for the
county courthouse first because you can almost guarantee that the
description was written 40 years ago and that Fred has either died
or sold the farm. Landmarks are gone, untended overgrowth
obscures the most careful of inspections from 200 feet away, etc.
The purpose of these projects is to
find and document the location of all
extant burial sites within the indicated counties including, where available, physical
address, MapQuest links, KEY map page locations, links to cemetery catalog
pages, photos showing general cemetery conditions and, probably most
important, the exact Latitude/Longitude Coordinates (WGS84 datum)
for the site. I hope you find the information useful.
