Subject: Bath Co VA Steele family - Tom this page is great! I have had the good fortune to do on site research in Bath Co VA and have some good Armstrong/Mann/Steele data. Perhaps someone does not already have it. I am a descendant of James Steele and Edith Pyle. James is a proven Revolutionary War participant. The paper was admitted in 1961 so I know the research is good. I descend through Samuel Steele their son who went to Missouri after the death of James [ca. 1805/6]. I am glad that there is a repository [National] and am glad that Dodie Browning is back to researching and distributing data and also that Tammy is doing the Newsletter.
Thanks to all of you!

Subject: Steele/Millard Family - In researching the Millard family, I thought you may want to know that a "Hans Steele" married Eliza Ann (Lida) Millard. I found the information in our local LDS library and other periodicals many years ago. While I don't have the dates of the marriage, Lida Millard Steele's father was Mordecai Millard (b.in 1805 in Columbia County, Pennsylvania [his parents and other relatives had lived in Union Township, Berks County] and he died in June of 1869 in Buck Creek Township, (now close to Indianapolis) in Indiana. He was named for Mordecai Lincoln, gr-gr-grandfather to President Abraham Lincoln. His wife's name was Matilda (1810 - 1893.) Lida Millard Steel was born sometime after 1836. I do not know when she and Hans Steele married, but the information I have says that they traveled to California in an attempt to improve Hans' health--he was suffering from tuberculosis at the time. He died in California, however, and Lida Steele returned to Hancock County in Indiana!

At some point when they were in California, they met up with Lida's brother, Elisha, my direct ancestor, who was one of two witnesses to the "Last Will and Testiment of Hans Steele." Lida then returned to Indiana. She was the 7th of 11 children of Mordecai and Matilda Millard. Mordecai is listed as Justice of the peace of Buck Creek Township in 1852 and sheriff in 1857 and 1858 in the "History of Hancock County, Indiana," by George J. Richman. This may be of some help to you as I noticed someone posted a query concerning a Millard F. Steele. Perhaps the "Millard" came from Lida Millard Steele's side of the family.

Subject: Steeles, Washington., D.C.> Penn.> Minn. - Enjoyed your home page. Well done! I am trying to locate my father's family. My father was Millard F. Steele Jr., son of Millard F. Steele Sr. and grandson of George M. Steele Sr. My father was born in Washington D.C. in 1915 and brought back to Minnesota when he was just a baby. He never saw his father again and his father subsequently died a few years later. His grandfather, George M. Steele Sr. was last known to be in Philadelphia, PA and passed away in the early '30's. Besides his son, Millard F. Steele Jr., he also had another son, George M. Steele Jr., known to be in New York and two daughers, Elsie Steele Roche and Marie Steele Stauffer, also last known to be in Philadelphia. If any of these names mean anything to you, please contact me at rlarsen@wavefront.com.
