Subject: Just Beginning - I am just beginning my research and most of the Steele's in my line, actually it's my husband's line, are from the St. Louis and Clinton County, Illinois area. I only go back as far as John Steele, Sr. who was born in 1764/1770 in Virginia. He married Catherine Jarvies born 1767 also in Virginia. The only child I know of is William Steele born Dec 8, 1788 in Virginia. He married Jane Sparks in about 1810 in Clinton County, Illinois. They had 10 children.
I am willing to do research for anyone who may need information from Missouri and as much of Illinois that I can. If my line might coinside with your fmaily lines I would love to hear from you.
I want to do my part to connect the Steele Family to our roots.
Also, Tom, if you need any help with the reunion I would love to help if I can. I'd love to hear from any of my "in-laws"!!! That would be all of you since I'm not truely blood related!!!!
Thanks!

I have posted this brief outline before, but the one to home in on is John Garner Steele born in 1839,died in 1909. John Garner was a farmer who got into a property line dispute with his neighbor Jacob Werner. Tensions mounted, the two families had a face off, shots were fired by one side or the other and Jacob Werner turned up dead. John Garner Steele and his two oldest boys, Haley Morris Steele and George Emery Steele, were arrested for murder.
The two boys were later freed, but John Garner Steele stood trial, was convicted in 1897 and sent to the Iowa State Penitentiary for life. He bacame desperatly sick and received a pardon from the Governor and went home to die a few weeks after the pardon. All of this took place in Monroe County, Albia, Iowa, where the full transcript of the proceedings are available for public review.
John Garner Steele also served in the Civil War as a Union Soldier in Company D of the 36th Iowa Infantry.
John Garner Steele's father, Scott Steele, hung himself in the Iowa Poor Farm on of Monroe County on August 7, 1884. John Garner Steele's grandson, Otto Dell Steele shot himself in Frederic, Iowa.
Now, surely with all these exceptional things going on in this family someone has heard these tales and can help me make a connection.
Scott Steele was born Pennsylvania, his son John Garner Steele was born in Shelly County, Indiana, but all ended up in Monroe County Iowa area.
Any help would be appreciated. Jack Childers in Oklahoma City.

Hi, These are some of my Steele ancestors.
Much of the information I have found I owe to David Steele, keeper of the Gloucestershire Surnames list. I really appreciate all the help he's given me. He has an amazing amount of information on the Steele lines.
Mary Grace Steel - born 1771 Newland England (married to Thomas Harrison)
daughter of
Elmes Steel - 1745-1824 Newland England & Mary Benfield
son of
Samuel Steel 1708-1779 Littledean England & Mary Hawker
son of
Samuel Steel 1658-1747 Littledean England & Francis ?
According to a family tree compiled by Peter Steele of England his father was one of three brothers, either Thomas, Arthure or Edward. Their father's name was Steeven.
Does anyone have any of these names in their history?
Lorraine Burnett

I've recently started genealogy research for my husband's side of the family when I learned that this is here I became very excited. Unfortunately his family didn't keep very good record of the "family tree". His mother's maiden name is Steele and when she heard that I was working to locate information on her family she was thrilled. Now I have the hard part ahead of me. I'm learing how much work it really does take to research family history. I just got back from a trip from Salt Lake City where I was overwhelmed and wish I lived. There is so much information there and I didn't have near enough time to look for more family. What you're doing here is WONDERFUL and I am glad you are willing to provide this for people like me. My Steele family came from Virginia but some have since settled here in Missouri. If I can research anything on this end for the Steele families I would be very happy to. I am so thankful for all the people wo want to help
others to discover their family histories!!! This is great!!!!! Any information I have I am happy to share with others. I have some dates and locations on my Steele's but have come to a dead end too!! Anything I can do to help let me know!!!!

Isaac Perry STEEL married Laura STONE. They had seven children. He was a miller and died on June 19, 1909, in Chillicothe, Ohio of a cerebral hemmorhage resulting from arterial sclerosis. His last known address was 637 N. High St., Chillicothe, Ohio.
Children of Isaac and Laura were:
Clarence Steel, b. est. 1894
Carl Steel, b. est. 1895
Florence Steel, b. est 1896
Mack Steel, b. est. 1897
Edith Laura Steel, b. est 1898
Rev. Wayne Steel, b. 1899, d. est. 1970-1979
Col. Clyde Eugene Steel, b. 1901
Rev. Wayne Steele never married. He wrote The Religion of Beauty which was published by the Hobbert Press, Chicago, Illinois, in 1940. I believe he died in Chicago in the 1970s.
Col. Clyde Eugene Steele married Suzanne Culbertson (nee Susannah Hopkins Snyder). They had three children. Clyde was better known by his middle name and was a West Pointe graduate and a decorated career military officer. He served in the Battle of France in WWII. His highest rank achieved was that of colonel sometime after the war. He died in 1956. His wife died in the mid 1990s.
Children of Clyde and Suzanne:
Nathan C. Steele, November 22, 1941, still living
Perry Erskine Steele, b. September 16, 1943, still living, my father
Laura Steele, December 13, 1945, still living
Hope to find someone with a connection to Nathan.

James ( g-grandfather) md. Lucinda Jane Walton 15 Nov 1891 Comanche Co,Tx. They had 9 children: James Ernest, Annie Ellen, Gertie Alice (my grandmother), Jesse William, Edward Lee, Nettie May, Eva, MinnieL, Hattie
It has been suggested that Ninian (1775) was son of Robert Steele and Jane Chambers. Any comment? I just found 2 land records in Cape Girardeau Co,MO. One shows Robert A Steele and the other says Robert G Steele. Both name the following Steele's: Sarah J, David C, Eloisa A, Ninian, and James. Dated 10 Dec 1841.
I goofed and hit "send" too soon. I wanted to ask if anyone had any info on the Mo. Steele's. Are the names in the land records my James C. and his siblings? I would love to share info with anyone working on this family

My grandfather's given name was Glenn Steele and was adopted in 1922 in East St. Louis, Illinois. His name was changed when he was adopted. The only name on the papers was that of his mothers - Ellen Steele. My grandfather died last month and I was trying to find out some history on his biological side of the family. I would still love to find out some information for myself. If anyone has anything that may fit with the little bit of information that I have, I would be very grateful.
Thanks for your time,

Subject: Jesse Mildred Steele - Hi! I got your e-mail to the Steele list and thought it was great. I always appreciate information regarding my family! I am the granddaughter of Jesse Mildred Steele. Sorry I forget what number she was on your list. Again I appreciate the information but hers is wrong. She was born June 2, 1921 in Caney, Morgan CO., Kentucky. That is per her birth certificate and herself. She died on Jan 30, 1986 in North College Hill, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. And that information is per her death certificate and personal knowledge. Thanks again for the rest of the information! :)
Sincerely,
Melanie Hammons Bishop
