Subject: STEELE List New Arrival - About 1765, one of my Ancestors living in Delaware, Jacob MOORE married Hanna (STEELE) DONALD. Hanna was the widow of Alexander DONALD. Hanna was the daughter of William STEELE Sr., and was given the home farm in Delaware (Mill Creek Hundred) by the will of her brother Wiliam STEELE, Jr., of New London, Pennsylvania, in 1772. She had four children with Mr. DONALD. She had three or possibly four by Mr. MOORE. This is everything that I have on STEELE. I suspect William STEELE, Jr. and possibily his father may have died due to the Revolutionary War.

Subject: Harrison "Harry" Steele,9/4/1908-12/5/1990 - A few weeks before the above, my grandfather, passed he lamented that with his passing there would be few left who "could run back the generations." So many of his decendents had left their homeplace in Mingo County for jobs elsewhere that connections to places and the past were dimming.... Imagine my delight to stumble onto your Roundtable!
My Grandpa Harry was the son of Smith Eppison and Betty Chafin Steele. Smith Eppison was the son of Harrison and Nancy Hatfield Steele. Harrison was the son of John and Patsy Mounts Steele. Grandpa was married to Mary Belle Moore Steele. They had the folowing children: Thomas, Benny, Harry, Jr., Ermal, John, Robert, Crawford, Evelyn (my mother), Lola, Betty, and Mary.
Thank you for all your hard work; you've certainly created a treasure for many a wayfaring Steele... Would like to see some family "stories" as well, if anyone is so inclined.

Subject: William McClure Steele - Wm. McClure Steele, brn 11-10-1814 Lynnville, Giles County, TN. Father William Mother Mary Adline Jones. William McClure Steele married Sarah Hillary Langtry (nee) Deanes, brn 12-15-1829, Lynnville, Giles County, TN. I am seeking information re: parents of William McClure and beyond. Family tradition is that this branch of the Steel(e)s lived near Rock Bridge, PA. There is mention of a Steel(e)in Philadelphia (?) who owned a great span of horses which he used in the drayage business. Another Steel(e) was a blacksmith who was famous as a "fist fighter" and people from miles around came to fight with him. Sound familiar???

Stewart Steel married twice, had children:

2. m. Myrtilla Bishop nee Sterrett, had sons William A. (1836-1879, Joliet Ill), Stewart (St. Louis), James B. (Altoona Pa.), and daughter Sarah Myrtilla (possibly m. Levi B. Brown?)

Subject: George Steele of So. Carolina - I have another George Steele from whom I am descended. He is found in the 1800, 1810, and 1820 census in South Carolina. The 1800 census shows George Steele livng outside of Lexington Township near Lick Creek and Saluda Rocky Creek, the household being comprised of the following: 2 males under 10, 1 male between 26 and 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female between 16 and 26, and 1 female between 26 and 45. The 1810 census shows George in the same location but now he is Major in the state militia. By 1820 George and family are in Richland County, S.C. The household is as follows: 1 male between 16 and 18, 2 males between 16 and 26, 1 male over 45, 1 female between 16 and 26, and 1 female over 45. What is known about George is that he married Mary Wingard, the daughter of Christian Wingard, the boat builder. They had 10 children. George apparently became fairly wealthy using some of his father-in-law's boats to haul freight between Columbia and Charleston, S.C. A son named Honorius from whom I descend was born in 1798. Geoge died in 1821 in Columbia, S.C. I have never been able to link George to any other Steel(e)s in S.C. or to anyone who comes before him. Before George there are lots of tantalizing possibilities in central S.C. but nothing definitive.

Subject: Family of Ransom H. Steele - My Grandfather Started out in Virginia and possible went north at the start of the civil war. After the war He settled in Western Indiana (Putnam county). About 1899 He passed away. Shortly after that (9-13-1900) The remaining children went to an orphanage in Knighttown Indiana (eastern part Mariam county). Mary Whited married Roy "Buck" Steele--Russell Co.--she is still living and is now approx. 89 or 90 years old. Subject: Steel in Wisconsin - I'm looking for any information about the following people - Help!! The 1850 census of Wisconsin, Sugar Creek, in Walworth County lists Martin Bower, 25 (1825), with Mary Bower, 19, a seven month old daughter, Doratha, and a man, William Steel, 48, (possibly Mary's father). Martin was born in Pennsylvania, and Mary and William in New York. Doratha was born in Wisconsin.
The 1860 census of Wisconsin, Bear Creek, Sauk County, lists Martin Bower, 35, as a farm laborer, living with the Lorenz Smith family. This census also shows him born in Pennsylvania. His age is difficult to read, could be 25, 28, 35. But he is alone, no information on Mary and Doratha.

Subject: Edith Steele, McDowell County WV - I stumbled across your homepage and steele information and find it very exciting. My mother, Edith, was a Steele from McDowell County WV. Her father was James Burton Steele (b. 7-21-80) and grandfather Samuel (b. 1-18-66). I have a bit of info my mother gave me, including a story from her father that there was a Steele-Justice feud in Buchanan County, Va.
