          Stories 'n Stuff

A collection of stories 'n stuff about family, friends and things of the Kanawha County and elsewhere.

Memories of Joyland These are some of my memories of Rand, W.Va., where my sisters and I grew up although some would doubt that I ever did, and my days at Joyland Park where I worked as a teenager. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Hatfield-Steele Connections I guess I'm just as guilty as the next guy for playing up my family's connections with the Hatfields, but I'll probably add even more. This piece includes an account of a business partnership, reportedly between my great great granddaddy Ralph Steele, but probably between one of our younger Ralphs, and Devil Anse Hatfield.
Miracles Happen With Help of 911... A true life story by first cousin George Steele of the Honolulu Star Bulletin about how some quick thinking by Aunt Ernestine helped save her husband's life. Congratulations to Ernie and Charleston's 911 service.
Murder in Mingo County An account by Willard Mounts of how Jim and Ralph Steel killed Jim's brother-in-law in a dispute over a still. There's a possibility we're all related, as Great Granddad George Steele's brother John, the one who never came home from the Civil War, was married to Martha "Patsy" Mounts and the family had lived in that area of Logan County that became Mingo.
William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield Excerpts from Anse on Island Creek and Other Poems by Paul Curry Steele. Devil Anse is buried at the Hatfield Cemetery at Sarah Ann, about two or three miles from the Steele Cemetery at Switzer. The author is probably related, but I'm not certain.
