COASTGUARDS

Coastguards on Sheppey

The Isle of Sheppey is situated on the north Kent coast, and being surrounded by water, had several Coastguard Stations.  These manned the numerous places of entry around its coastline that were likely to be infiltrated by smugglers.

Coastguards and Customs men were sent to many different locations, often away from their birthplace, and so have become very difficult to trace.  In an effort to find these elusive families, I have scoured the Censuses from 1841 to 1901 for Sheppey, and my findings appear here together with some Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.  Remember that these are my interpretations and need to be checked.  I take no responsibilities for incorrect data.  If you find a relative and would like me to link a family history page to this, please let me know.  Also, I should be pleased to hear from anyone who had a relative serving on the Island but who isn't  to be found on any of the Censuses.
