[NI110770] History of Cambria Co., PA 1907 By: Henry Wilson Storey; Cyrus L. Wissinger, a well known bldg contractor of Johnstown, Cambria Co., PA, who has been prominently identified with all matters of public importance for many yrs, is a desc of a family which took an active part in the war of the rev., & which came originally from Germany. Ludwig Wissinger, a ggfather of Cyrus I. Wissinger, & the pioneer anc of the Wissinger family in Amer, emigrated to US from Germany some time prior to the Amer Rev. settled into what is now (1907) kwn as Griffith Settlement, 1 1/2 mis SE of Johnstown. serv with distinction throughout the war of independence, & was honored by the government in recognition of his valuable servs, with a grant of land of 300 acs. The country at that time was practically a wilderness; & Mr. Wissinger cleared it of timber, commenced its cultivation, & soon had a productive & comfortable farm. He subsequently sold the entire tract for the very moderate sum of $300, which at that time was considered a very fair valuation of the land. At death, his remains were interred near what is now Moxham. m & raised a family, among whom were: John; Lewis, who lived to the remarkable age of 103 & d Conemaugh; George W., at one time constable Stony Creek Twp.; Daniel, a farmer m Ms Goughnour; Esther, m Jacob Snyder; Isaac, near Scalp Level; Samuel, Westmoreland Co.; David, near Plum Creek, Indiana Co. John Wissinger, oldest chld of Ludwig Wissinger, b Cambria Co., PA, abt. 1785. farmer by occup & owned considerable land in what was at that time Richland Twp., & now Adams Twp. won great renoun as a hunter & for his fine marksmanship in gen. m Eve Stineman & had chdn: Jacob, m Mary Shank; John S.; George, m Lydia Byers; Daniel, m Peggy Mohler; Sarah, m William Shank; Barbara, m Samuel Livingston; Catherine, m Samuel Noon; Elizabeth, m Joshua Shank; Esther, m John Hay; Eve, m Daniel Boyles. John S. Wissinger, 2nd son & chld of John & Eve (Stineman) Wissinger, b Richland Twp., Cambria Co., PA., Apr 1821. farmer by occup, & 1856 purchased a farm of 95 acs near Salix, Adams Twp., Cambria Co.. On this land passed the greater part of his life & is now residing with son, Isaiah J. Wissinger, Lovett. In politics, was always a staunch Democrat, & was a man of influence in his former Twp., holding the office of school director & supervisor. m Lydia Stull, d/o Jacob Stull, Jr., & they had chdn: Delilah, d chldhood; Cyrus L.; Lorenzo, m Mary Costlow & his chdn: Ella & Cora; Isaiah J., m Hannah Knepper & his chdn: John, Verson, & Stanley. Cyrus I. Wissinger, 2nd chld & oldest s/o John S. & Lydia (Stull) Wissinger, b on father's farm, near Salix, Cambria Co., PA, 1857. Until age of 20 yrs, he spent his life on the paternal farm, & attended the public schools of the district, in the meantime assisting his father in his spare time. He then came of Johnstown, Cambria Co., & was apprenticed to learn the carpenter's trade with McCreery & Long. Upon completion of apprenticeship he found employment with David Teeter in a planing mill in Rosedale. At the end of 2 yrs he returned to Johnstown, & engaged in the contracting business, associating himself in partnership with Samuel Strayer. The partnership was subsequently dissolved & Mr. Wissinger continued the business along on an extensive scale, contracting for & bldg 260 houses in Johnstown & the adjoining boros. He associated himself in partnership with Albert Heinze, in 1901, & since that time they have erected more than 70 bldgs, some of which are among the finest dwellings in the city, notably those of Daniel Cauffield, Moxham, & Professor J. M. Berkey, superintendent of city schools. Though a Democrat in a strong Republican community, Mr. Wissinger has repeatedly been elected to hold public office, & has invariably done so to the entire satisfaction of even his opponents. serv as school director, councilman, assessor, & judge of elections. The office of assessor for 6 yrs, & was elected councilman & judge of elections in 1904. a consistent memb. Un Evang Ch, Dale & an earnest worker in its interests. He has been a trustee of the institution 15 yrs, has held the office of superintendent of the Sun School, & is at present class leader of said congregation. In the fall of the present yr he was sent as a delegate to the annual conference held in Big Boss, PA; at this conference elected as a delegate to the gen conference held in Cedar Rapids, IA. Mr. Wissinger is a man whose integrity, reliability, & aggressiveness have often been cited as an example of what a good citizen should be, & is highly esteemed throughout the city. m May 20 1880, Barbara Gramling, d/o George & Sara Catherine (Paul) Gramling, Dale, & had 2 chdn: Elmer F., who is in the employ of his father in the contracting business, m Sadie Bose, d/o John D. & Effie J. Mr. Cramer lived in Somerset Co. until the yr 1862 then moved to IA, but returned after 1 yr. Abt 1866 he moved to Fayette Co. then resided 14 yrs & then removed to KS. He lived in that state 2 yrs & then returned to Fayette Co. After 2 yrs he again returned to Somerset Co. where he resided until his death. Bur. Wesley Chapel Cem. near Scullton.

[NI110973] LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF DANIEL FAIDLEY COURT RECORD To the honorable judges of Orphans Court, Somerset Co. Your auditor appointed as per the foregoing commission to distribute the fund in the hands of Susan Faidley administrator of Daniel Faidley, late, Lincoln Twp, deceased, after due notice by publication in the "Somerset Standard" & "Somerset Herald" 2 wkly newspapers published in boro of Somerset, of the time & place of meeting sat at his office in the said boro of Somerset on Sat 25 Feb 1899, attended by Susan Faidley administrator as aforesaid & by his councel F.J. Kooser Esquire., Sarah Faidley widow of Daniel Faidley deceased, now w/o John J. Casebeer, Lewis Trimpey husb. of Ellen Faidley & Samuel Faidley were also present. From the testimony there taken & hereto appended, & from the records your auditor finds as:
A. Daniel Faidley d on 12 Jul 1897, intestate, leaving to survive him a widow Sarah Faidley since intermarried with John J. Casebeer, & issue 10 chldn, towit:

The note of Samuel Faidley to Walter & Jones & assigned to Daniel Faidley, dated Aug 31 1874 calling for $13.50 at 1 dy is defeated by virtue of the agreement made between Samuel Faidley & Daniel Faidley in 1889 or 1890 when Sanuel purchased about 20 ac of land from his father Daniel Faidley, by which said agreement their note was to be regarded as having been pd.
D4. The administrator is entitled to credit for the additional items, as follows: for acknowledging deed 50 cents, Joseph Crise account $1.00 & Elias Griffith account $4.07.

[NI111007] Samuel Jacob Booker was adoped by Benjamin Sears after his mother d & was taken to IL. enlisted Co. G, 70th IL Volunteer Infantry at Camp Point, IL. He served during the Civil War until Dec 1862, when he became ill & was placed the Field Hosp. at New Haven, KY. He was later moved to Louisville, KY & Mar 1863, he was brought to Quincy, IL. He was discharged from service on April 16, 1863, & went home to Paloma, IL, where he d on Jul 14, 1863 as a result of his war service.

[NI111023] NATHANIEL WALKER4 He was perhaps b in 1730 in Prince George, dying in Frederick Co., MD in 1766. m Elizabeth ______, perhaps in 1747. He was a farmer. A Nathan Walker is on a Muster Roll of Foot in the MD Forces Commanded by Capt. John Dagworthy at Fort Frederick at the onset of the French & Indian War. The muster covered the 31 day period of 9 Jan thru 8 Feb 1758. He is also listed on a 12 Nov 1758 Roll at Loyal Hanning under Col. Dagworthy, for a muster that extended 92 days, from 9 Aug thru 8 Nov 1758. He is listed as having deserted on 12 Nov. Meyer, MD Muster Rolls 1757-1758, MD Historical Magazine, v. 70, p. 104-9, 1975. The "desertion" was probably not as bad as it seems. 1st, several of the men are listed as deserting on the same date, which was 4 days past the muster period. So, it would seem that several just decided that their tour was over & it was time to go home. The description of the places where some of the men were killed implies that Nathan was at the Battle of Ft. Duquesne. The Jul 1776 census shows an Elisabeth Walker as the head of household in the Wye Hundred of Queen Anne Co., with 1 male & 1 female over 21. Supra, p.150. Obviously, she would be the female, & Renelder was well over 21 by 1776, so it could be them. 1 of his chldn was Renelder.

[NI111024] CHARLES WALKER3, THE CARPENTER It is said that this Charles always styled himself a carpenter in buying or selling land. He was b on 9 May 1698 in Prince George Co., MD. He is identified in his father�s Will as the eldest son. It is said that he d after 1772 in Cumberland Co., NC. He was 1st m to Mary _____, perhaps in 1720, probably in MD, 2nd to Elizabeth ___. Charles & Mary had 3 chldn. He owned land called "The Virgins Delight", part of which was on the west side of Catoctin Mountain. It is said that Charles & Mary sold part of that land to Nathaniel Walker, their son. Charles & Nathaniel were both residents of Frederick Co., & the land was located there also. Frederick Co. is located in the northwest corner of MD, bounded on the North by PA & on the West by what is now WV. The remainder of this land was sold by Renelder Walker & his mother before they went to NC. At that time it was described as 2 parcels, 1 being "Virgins Delight" & the other being "Resurvey of Virgins Delight". A Charles Walker, Jr. is listed as taxable in Rock Creek Hundred of Prince George's Co. in 1719. Calendar of MD State Papers No. 1 The Black Books, p.22. A Charles Walker was also listed as taxable for the Eastern Branch Hundred in the same Co. for 1733, id., p.42. A George Walker was among the 450 or so inhabitants of Frederick Co. who signed a petition on 5 Mar 1766, requesting Gov. Horatio Sharpe to call an Assembly to issue bills of credit to pay public creditors, "as the scarcity of money is nowhere as fatal in its consequences." Charles & Van Swearingen were also signatories. A Charles Walker was in the Talbot Co. Militia in 1748, under the command of Capt Robert Goldsborough, but it is just as likely that Charles, Jr. was the militiaman. Colonial Militia, 1740, 1748, MD Historical Magazine, v. 6, p. 189, 1911.

[NI111025] The MD Calendar of Wills, Vol.6, supra, p.169. Magruder says it is in volume 20, p.87. The Will makes reference to lands known as "Bacon Hall" & "Cut Short" on Collington Branch. He was a planter. He patented the following acreage in Prince George�s Co.. Rich Thicket, 300 acs, on 7 Oct 1732; Bacon Hall Addition, 39 acs, on 13 Oct 1740; & Virgin�s Delight, 150 acs, on 15 May 1744. Coldham, Settlers of MD, 1731-1750, p.232. In 1694 or 1695, at Calvert Co., MD, m Rebecca Isaac. A bro-in- law was Richard Isaac. In 1698 he (as Cha. Wallker) served as a juror in connection with the resurvey of a tract of land on Collington Branch. Wilcox, Prince George�s Co. Land Records, Vol. A, 1696-1702, p.41. In 1707, 1 Charles Walker & his wife were witnesses in Her Majesty vs. Margaret Cane, wherein the Defendant was accused of giving birth secretly to 2 chldn & then killing them by putting them in a tub of ashes. Calendar of MD State Papers No. 1 The Black Books, p.7. At p. 23, the same source lists a Charles Walker as taxable in Collington Hundred of Prince George's Co. for 1719. At p. 42 Rebecca Walker is taxable in the Eastern Branch Hundred in Prince George's Co. for 1733. Leonard says that he apparently took over his father�s ferry business & was paid 5,000 pounds of tobacco for his 1704 servs, but William Walker took over in 1705. In 1708 William was admonished to get a new boat. At the Nov Court in 1717 1 James Lloyd told the Justices that he would run the ferry until William made up his mind as to whether or not he would keep it. Tavern in the Town, supra. 11 chldn were b to Charles & Rebecca Walker, according to his Will & the records at St. Barnabas Church, Queen Anne Parish, at Leeland. MacKenzie, supra, p.269; Brown, Prince George�s Co., MD Indexes of Church Registers 1686-1885, Vol. I, p.345-6.

[NI111026] 1670 a Daniel is listed in Liber 12, folio 497 as "Immigrated 1670. Of Somerset Co.." "Immigrated" meant that he had paid his own way to MD. DANIEL WALKER, SR. He is the progenitor of the Walkers in Amer. b abt. 1640, m before 1662. His birth place is stated to have been England. Early Settlers shows a Daniel Walker being "transported" in 1657, as a servant. Patent Liber 5, folio 514. The book explains that "transported" meant that passage was pd by someone else, & the reference to "servant" meant that the person had contracted to repay the cost of passage by working as a servant. An Alice Walker is listed in 1666 as w/o Daniel, with an indication of "service"; that meant that she had satisfactorily completed her terms of service, & was entitled to the free 50 acs of land the Colony was offering. Patent Liber 10, folio 407. Daniel & Alice came together in 1657. We have to assume that the record would not indicate her entitlement to land until she was in fact qualified. Why a similar entry does not appear for Daniel I cannot say. However, in 1670 a Daniel is listed in Liber 12, folio 497 as "Immigrated 1670. Of Somerset Co." "Immigrated" meant that he had pd his own way to MD, according to Early Settlers, so there is reason to think this is not our Daniel, especially since the same page lists a Benjamin as the s/o Daniel. On the other hand, it could be that several of the listed Walkers were related, & the entries are just not fully explanatory. The 1st official mention of him is probably in 1659, when a Will witnessed by him on 2 May 1659 was probated. The MD Calendar of Wills, Vol.1, supra, p.14. Alice d in MD before 1702 (but see infra). Daniel d after 20 Sep 1702 (the date he signed his Will) & before 12 Jan 1702-03, as his will was probated on that date in Talbot Co., MD. He was a Talbot resident. The MD Calendar of Wills, Vol. 3, p. 36. Magruder�s Index, supra, states that this Will is found in V. 3 at p.171. He was a farmer. Daniel Walker was s/o John & Elizabeth Walker, b in Pilkington, England; that in 1677 he was appointed to keep a ferry over the St. Michaels River; that he was Clerk & Registrar of St. Peter's Parish from 1707 to 1724. In 1722, Daniel Walker, School Master, bought 92 acs from Joseph Pond, called "Jamica". The Will of James Bishop, probated in Talbot Co. on 12 Oct 1708, bequeathed personalty to "Dan'll., s/o Daniel Walker, schoolmaster. The MD Calendar of Wills, Vol. 3, supra, p.125. However, since our Daniel d in 1702/3, much of what Alfred wrote cannot be accurate, or at least not applicable to Daniel, Sr. The book to which Alfred referred is History of Talbot Co. MD 1661-1861, by Oswald Tilghman. In Vol. 2, beginning at p. 443, there is a discussion of the early schools & schoolmasters of Talbot. At p.445 is found the following. In 1722, Daniel Walker, schoolmaster, purchased of Joseph Pond 92 acs of land called "Jamaica," at the head of 1 of the branches of 3rd Haven Creek, upon which Daniel Walker then lived. Of this teacher we know something more than of those before mentioned, from records written by his own hand, for he was the clerk & register of Saint Peter�s Parish from 1707 to Aug 28 1724. He was b at Pilkington, England, & was the s/o John & Elizabeth Walker. In 1677 he was appointed to keep a ferry over Saint Michael�s River, at the point where the bridge now stands, & in the levy record of the Co. it is quaintly stated: "To Daniel Walker, in consideration of his poverty, many chldn, loss, ferriage over river with a canowe, at least 2,500 Lbs [of tobacco]." He has not left the number of his chldn in doubt, for he has faithfully recorded in the parish registry their several names, the yr, dy of the mo, dy of the wk, & hr of the day, when each was b. I find it difficult to reconcile the known dates of Sr's death with several of Tilghman�s statements, & I believe it was Jr who is being described as the schoolmaster, clerk & registrar, with Sr being the ferryman. The reference to "where the bridge now stands" is made again at p.513 & could furnish a good reference point. More significantly, the names of the listed chldn might aid us here. The sources of Sr�s parents� names or his place of b are not given. I find no �Pilkington� on modern British maps. Another source states that he came into the Province in 1657 & that Alice completed her service in 1666. He kept the ferry until 1697, when he applied for a license to keep an Ordinary near the ferry landing. This source also says he d in 1702. Leonard, Tavern in the Town, p.247. Leonard says: No 1 who has researched the land on the west side of & adjoining the site of the Miles River Ferry can overlook the Walkers. Old Daniel acquired "Daniel�s Rest, 50 acs, 1676; "Daniel�s Addition," 100 acs, 1687; & "Walker�s Tooth," 147 acs, 1694. Charles (of Daniel) patented "Walker�s Corner," 18 acs in 1705, adjoining "Daniel�s Rest." He & William, his bro, inherited "Millington" & patented "Partnership," 100 acs in Miles River Neck, 1708. "Walker�s Tooth", in Talbot Co., was surveyed for him on 19 Jul 1694. Richardson, Side-Lights on MD History, p. 350. The earliest entry I find for him is where he was the witness on a deed dated 16 Jul 1667. Leonard, Talbot Co. MD Land Records Vol.II, p.9. On 12 June 1668 he & his wife conveyed 200 acres "in Chester River, north side Winchester Creek" to Nathaniel Evitts. Leonard, supra, p.11. On 15 Oct 1677 he & his wife, Alice, conveyed to John Lewis 200 acs on the south side of the Chester River, called "Cheshire." Leonard, Talbot Co. MD Land Records, Vol. III, p.5. In both deeds he was referred to as "Planter." On 14 Jun 1668, Alice Walker gave a power of atty to Thomas Bowker to acknowledge her consent to the sale of land on the south side of Chester River. Leonard, Talbot Co. MD Land Records Vol.II, p.12. In 1687 he bought land on the Ashby Branch of Miles River. Leonard, Talbot Co. MD Land Records Vol.V, p.91. On 21 Jun 1966 Alfred wrote another letter, repeating some of the above & telling Andy that he had found 1 Ronolde Walker marrying in 1559, in the ", Rotherham section of Yorkshire,", & that he believed this to be the original of our Renelder. He was the residuary legatee of the estate of Henry Parker, a Talbot resident who d 1686/7. Parker must have been a relative; he also devised land on the Wye River to William & Charles, which would indicate they were already of majority, but it might also provide a clue to Alice�s parentage. It is possible that Parker was her father, devising land to his grandchldn, or he could be an uncle to them. The MD Calendar of Wills, Vol.2, supra, p.16. According to Comsoft Roots & the Will, Daniel & Alice had 7 chldn.

He came from Liverpool, England 1699 on the "Brittania" when he was about 18 with William Penn & a large number of Quakers seeking religious freedom. 14 wks were required to make the trip. The ship was so overcrowded with passengers that the supply of food & water was entirely inadequate. The heat was intense, which added to the suffering. 56 of the passengers d at sea, 20 more after they reached the shore. Among the dead were George Haworth's sister, her hus. & their new-born baby. George was very ill, but survived. Upon landing America, he went to his sister, Mary, Harbills, MD, to recover. A wk later he went to Bucks Co., PA, to the home of his cousin, James, to continue his recovery. 1702, he bought 450 acres near Cottage Hill, near that of his cousin, the northern corner of Buckingham Twp., Bucks Co., PA. He was left PA by his father, John, who returned to London, England to fetch his wife, but she d & his father did not return to America. Young John is said to have run away from his foster-family & went to live with the Indians. He was fluent enough to serve as William Penn's interpreter. About 1690, John m Mary ?, possibly an Indian. They built several cabins on their land & gave shelter to poorer members of the family when they needed it. the records of the Buckingham Monthly Meeting (Quakers), John is memorialized as follows: "...in his youth somewhat airy...a man of remarkable self-denial & endured with much mildness... with loving & kind deportment...". He was one of the pioneers of this co., & settled near Wellersburg, Southampton Twp, where the house that he built is still standing. He carried on farming & distilling until 1830, when he d at the age of 83. His sons were John, Samuel & Jacob. John was b in Lehigh Co. in 1785 & came to his co. in 1812. He followed surveying & was co. register, sherrif & recorder. At the time of his death he owned 9000 acs in this co. He m Catherine Davis & was father of 4: Samuel, John L., Cornelius, & Catherine. John L. is a surveyor & resides in Somerset. Cornelius H. is a farmer, living in the northern part of the twp. He was a soldier in the rebellion for over 3 yrs.

Sarah w/o William Shank residing Richland Twp, Cambria Co.; 2. Jacob residing Indiana Co., Pa; 3. Elizabeth w/o Joshua Shank residing Indiana Co., Pa; 4. Esther w/o John Hay residing Stark Co., IN; 5. Barbara w/o Samuel Livingston residing Somerset Co., Pa; 6. George residing Somerset Co., Pa; 7. Catharine w/o Samuel Noon Jr. residing Richland twp, Cambria Co.; 8. John S. Wissinger (the Petitioner) residing Richland twnp, Cambria Co. 9. Daniel R. residing Richland twp, Cambria Co. & the following named gchdn being the issue of a deceased dau. Eve who intermarried James Boyles to wit: Samuel Boyles, Elizabeth Boyles, John Boyles & Daniel Boyles all of whom are in their minority & have no guardian, & that the said intestate d siezed in his demense of fee of & in a certain piece or parcel of land situtated in Richland Twp, Cambria Co., adjoining lands of the petitioners, land in possession of William Shank, lands of Lewis Donmeyer, Justice Varner, & others, containing 163 acres or thereabouts; abt 70 acres of which is cleared & thereon erected a 2 story hewed log house & a frame barn now in the occupancy of Daniel R. Wissinger. & praying the court to award an Inquest to make partition of the premises aforesaid to & among the chdn & representatives of the said intestate in such manner & in such preportions as by the laws of this Commonwealth is directed if such partition can be made without prejudice to or spoiling the whole. But if such partition cannot be made thereof as aforesaid then to value & appraise the same & make report of their preceeding herein according to law 6 Jun 1864 & an inquest awarded & Daniel R. Wissinger appointed guardian pro ___ vice of Sarah Boyles, Elizabeth Boyles, John Boyles & Daniel Boyles minor chdn of Eve Boyles deceased. Dec 17 1926 St Michael- Explosion of a carbide lighting plant caused by an open light which he was using while making some repairs, resulted in John Mock, aged 36, a miner & father of 6 small chldn, being instantly killed abt. 7:00 last eve at his Adams Twp. farm, near here. The victim's body was badly mutilated, 1 arm being torn off, the skull fractured & chest badly crushed. 2 of Mr Mock's sons were standing nearby watching their father working when the explosion occurred, but fortunately both boys escaped uninjured, though 1 has his hair singed by the flames. Pieces of the carbide generator were hurled through the air fo a distance of abt. 500 ft. Mr Mock was a miner for the Maryland Coal Co. survived by his widow, Mrs Lillie Mock, 4 mo.s pregnant,& these chldn: John, 13; George, 11; Beatrice, 9; Clarence "Penny", 7; Samuel, 5; & Hazel, 2. also leaves 2 bro.s & 2 sisters: Dorsey Mock, Dale, James Mock, Walnut Grove, Mrs Rachel Penrod, South Fork, & Miss Margaret Mock, who lives with the deceased. [NI111567] Thomas Holcombe was 1 of a co, of 140 Puritans & Dissenters who assembled the New Hosp. at Plymouth, England, with Bishops John Maverick & John Wareham Mar, 1630, when these bishops were chosen as officers of the ship, "Mary & John". The "Mary & John" had been chartered for the voyage to the Charles River MA After a 70 day voyage, the ship arrived on May 30, 1630. Town records of Dorchester, MA show Thomas Holcombe as a 1st settler there prior to Jan 1636. He was primarily a farmer. He moved 1635/6 to the junction of the Farmington & Connecticut Rivers, where Windsor was founded. Thomas Holcombe represented Windsor & Hartford Co., CT on the General Court; served for both courts at Hartford framing the Constitution of the Colony of CT; as a Deputy 1649.

[NI111583] Thomas Barber came to Windsor, CT, 1635, with the party fitted out by Sir Richard Saltonstall on the ship, "Christian". He was a soldier with the rank of Sergeant the Pequot War; he distinguished himself by his bravery a number of fights with the Pequots & particularly the taking of a fort which the Indians considered imprpegnable. From all that can be leard of the character of Thomas Barber, it is evident that he was a man of strong convictions, but liberal his views, especially so for the times which he lived. It was his contention that the Ch. had no right to interfere temporal matters. He was, to a marked degree, impulsive, energetic & possessed of great shrewdness business matters, but with an upprightness of character which won for him the confidence & respect of the Colonists. She m. 2nd Matthias Lambert in 1791 also in Madison Co KY. William Hopper's will was probated on 6 Jan 1806 & named his wife as Elanor.William Hopper's will was proved in Montgomery Co KY 6 Jan 1806. Named in will was dau. Elizabeth who m. 1st Capt. Edward Williams 2nd Matthias Lambert (1755-1839). [NI111738] Joseph Loomis was a woolen-draper Braintree, Essexshire, England. He sailed from London, Apr 11 1638, on the ship, "Susan & Ellen" & arrived Boston Jul 17 1638. It is mentioned the town records of Windsor, CT, that on Feb 2 1640 he was granted 21 acres adjoining the Farmington River on the west side of the Connecticut River from the Plantation. He was also granted several large tracts of land on the east side of the Connecticut River, partly from the town of Windsor & partly by purchase. He is generally supposed to have come the co. of Rev. Ephraim Huet, who arrived at Windsor on Aug 17 1639. He brought with him 5 sons & 3 dau.s. His house was situated near the mouth of the Farmington River on the "Island", so called because at every freshet it became temporarily an island by the overflowing of the Connecticut River.

[NI111755] 'Lieut.' Samuel Smith came from Ipswich, Suffolk Co., England on the ship, "Elizabeth" , 1634, with his wife & 4 chldn. From Wethersfield records he was designated as "fellmonger", probably a dealer hides, tanner & trader furs. He seems to have quickly assumed prominence the community & held the office of deputy to the General Court almost all of the sessions bet. 1641-1653. 1659/60, he removed to Hadley, MA, where he held similar important offices the church & state. The inventory of his estate was taken on Jan 17, 1681.

[NI112338] J-town Daily Tribune 5 Jan 1916 SOLOMON HORNER, NEAR BOSWELL, FOUND DEAD Boswell, Jan. 5 - Solomon Horner, an aged man living abt a mi from Boswell, was found dead in bed this morning. He had been sick only a few days & death was due to heart disease. Mr. Horner is survived by his widow & 2 chldn, Mrs. Edward Dinges, of Central City, & Samuel Horner, of J-town. A bro, George Horner, who will be 91 yrs old next mo, is critically ill at his home abt 1 mi from Boswell. The funeral of Solomon Horner, will be in charge of Undertaker L.G. Hoffman, of Boswell.

Mrs. Helsel was twice m 1st hus., H. H. Wonders, d 1879. 2 chldn were b to the 1st union, Flora m Wonders, who d 1890, & John H Wonders, with whom she resided. 2nd hus. also preceded her death. 2 chldn were b 2nd union : Earl J Helsel, Richland Twp & Anna Mary, w/o George Logue, Mineral Point. Surviving also are 6 gchldn & 1 ggchld. 9 bro.s & sis.s preceded her death. Funeral serv.s will be conducted at 4 pm Sun at the Wonders home by Rev. Sellers, Pastor of Elton Luth. Ch., & Rev. J. A. Robinson, pastor of Walnut Grove Ch. of the Breth. Bur. Dunmire Cem. The body was prepared for Bur. at Meek Funeral Home Windber.
