Valentine BULLEN.
Born 14 Feb 1802 in Great Bircham (Bircham Magna), Norfolk, ENGLAND. Baptism 7 Mar 1802 in St Mary's, Great Bircham, Norfolk, ENGLAND. Died Apr 1876 in Kent St, Sydney, N.S.W. Buried 18 Apr 1876 in Camperdown Cemetery, N.S.W. Occupation: Labourer, Bricklayer, Brickmaker. Religion CofE. Valentine BULLEN arrived in Australia aged 20 yrs as a convict (Government Servant) on 9 Mar 1823, aboard the "Princess Royal" which left England on 5 Nov 1822. The Princess Royal a 402- ton ship was built at Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1794 and on this trip the master was Hy. Sherwood and the ship's surgeon was Jas. Hunter. The voyage took 124 days. Valentine was sentenced for seven years in c. Norfolk, Borough of King's Lynn, Quarter Sessions & Goal Delivery on 21st January 1822. His religion was given as Protestant and his occupation Labourer. He was first sent to the employ of Mr John Campbell at Windsor, N.S.W. Then in a letter from The Colonial Secretary's Office dated 11th April 1823 there is a request that he "may be forwarded at the earliest opportunity to this office under charge of a constable". A second letter this time from the Court of Magistrates at Parramatta dated 14th April 1823 confirms his delivery to the above. He next appears on the "Return of convicts Maintained and Mustered by John Oxley Esq. during the year 1824." In the 1828 Census for N.S.W. his employer was a Mr Coghill of Kirkham, Cooke. Valentine was given his Certificate of Freedom, No 29/113 on 23 Feb 1829. By this time his trade was Bricklayer. He was described as 5 feet 51/2 inches tall with a sallow complexion, dark brown hair , hazel eyes and with a scar on his left hand. He married Harriet BERRY, daughter of Francis William BERRY & Elizabeth FINEGAN, 27 Jan 1845 in St Andrews, Presbyterian Church Of Scotland, Sydney, N.S.W. Born 1824 in Sydney, N.S.W. Died 6 Aug 1867 in Newtown, Sydney, N.S.W. Buried 8 Aug 1867 in Camperdown Cemetery, N.S.W. Religion CofE.
1828 Census for N.S.W. gives : Harriet Berry, age 4 yrs, Born in the colony, religion Protestant, a lodger with Mr Geo. Lane of Phillip St Sydney.
A letter to the Honourable Colonial Secretary dated 5th May 1830, states: "Harriet aged 5 years, the child of "FB" (Francis BERRY) convict assigned to a baker at Newcastle, has been deserted by her mother who lives a most vicious life. And I am therefore insistence to commend her to His Excellency the Governor as an orphan object for admission into the Female Orphan school she being the child of a crown convict. I have the honour to be Sir, Your most obedient Reverend Richard HILL, Asst. Chaplain"
