Pat Braswell, a descendant of Henry Rice, states there were two Levi Rices; the son of Henry Rice married Jane Simmons; the other Levi Rice was married to Mary Catherine Mitchell, daughter of Isaac Mitchell.

James "was a stone mason and made many tombstones for the community.One is still standing in the cemetery at the Big Springs Primitive Baptist Church; Springdale, Tennessee. It is at the grave of his first wife -- ." Inscription reads, "Francis Rice, beloved wife of James S. Rice, Died June 14, 1841."
