Anne B Hopkins; This Is My Song "Not for fame or name that the world might see but the glory be Lord to thee"

ETERNAL LIFE

The battle is over, but I know I've won the war.
I'm on my way to heaven where I won't suffer anymore
The road has been long and hard,
the fight grueling to the end.
My earthly time is up, but I'll see you again.
Don't be sad, be happy, because I'm in a better place,
without any of the hardships that all of you must face.
So don't you fret or worry, because I'm really not alone, .
I have a friend that's with me who sits upon a throne.
He promised if I believe in Him, I'd have eternal life.
Now I tell you all He keeps His promise.
Just belive in Jesus Christ

Finding Our African American Ancestors

The Randal Hopkins family reunion is an established tradition in the Thomasville, Georgia area for the last 46 years, with family coming from as far away as Seattle. For the last three years we have been researching records where 180 years ago our great-grandfather may have been a slave.

For many African Americans, tracking down ancestors can present a unique set of challengesfew cultural groups face as many obstacles when it comes to family history research. Often, a lack of credible documentation can make the journey both difficult and time-consuming.

Usually for pre-1870 history, African-Americans don't have much to go on because the census records list slaves only by age and sex, not by name. Therefore we are researching estate records that may confirm the oral history of our family and documentary evidence to verify it.

Because slaves were considered to be property, they were prohibited from reading, writing, attending school, legally marrying, owning land, owning a business, voting, and participating in many other activities that generate records on which much genealogical research is based. So it is necessary to do the genealogy of the plantation owner as well as the genealogy of the slave.

A major step to get past this problem was to find the last slave owner and to follow his records to learn what he did with his property. We are looking for wills, probate records, plantation records, bills of sale, land deeds etc. We are also studying slave history to learn more about the practices and laws which governed slavery and what life was like for slaves and plantation owners in the antebellum South.

The following note was written by Judge Henry William Hopkins of Thomasville, Thomas County, GA.

[No date is recorded on the note, but it was probably written in the 1930's]. It is a record of people remembered by Judge Hopkins who were

owned by his father, Dr. Thomas Spalding Hopkins (1818-1904) C.S.A. Laurel Hill Cemetery, Thomasville, Ga. .

Dr. Hopkins owned a plantation, "Sherwood", in that part of Wayne County, GA that is now Brantley County. [Notes from will of slave owner Dr. Thomas Spalding Hopkins, made on April 14, 1863,"before leaving Wayne County, for Thomas County, Ga, where he went on a furlough from the army during the U.S.Civil War to buy lands & a home and remove his family as refugees from the coast of Georgia to the interior.

{The arrival of Union gunboats along the Georgia coast marked the beginning of the end of white ownership of black slaves. As hundreds of Georgia Lowcountry slaves fled across enemy lines to seek sanctuary with Union troops, Georgia slaveholders attempted to move their slaves to more secure locations[Slavery in Antebellum Ga. Bought home in Thomasville & lands to move slaves & stock in Brooks County, near Morven,"Pike tract" "Perkins Place" land recently purchased from the "Pikes" in Brooks County Ga.The family were removed to Morven and lived there several months until they could get possession of the residence know as the Braswell Place, corner Crawford & present Remington Ave. on Jan. 1, 1864 about seven acres , now in the residential section of the town . He bought the entire block to Jackson & thence down present Dawson for $5,000, July, 1863.

"This was the last piece of property paid for in Confederate money in Thomasville."

Tamany, old native African -[The following note had no date but was filed with Hopkins family data from 1923.] It is probably from an interview with Judge Hopkins. "Old Tammany, the African, was brought over on the 'Wanderer', the last vessel that ran the blockade of slave trade into U.S. [In 1858] "Capt. Sam Brockington, was making for Brunswick, pursued by Revenue Cutter off St. Simon's, & landed slaves on Jekyll Is. The natives from the mainland & Island wd. come in canoes & row boats, jerk up a negro; throw him in, & off with his prize.

Wanderer

{The importation of slaves to America was outlawed in 1808, but from time to time vessels attempted to bring slaves illegally from Africa. The yacht Wanderer sailed for Charleston where she arrived on 25 June 1858; there her fitting out as a slave ship was completed before she got underway for Port of Spain, Trinidad, on 3 July; she was not only graceful in design but also amazingly fast--with speeds up to twenty knots. Indeed, she may have been built with the illegal slave trade secretly in mind, for the ship was quickly purchased by Southerners. She left that port on the 27th, crossed the Atlantic, and entered the Congo River on 16 September. She took on board some 500 Africas and sailed for North America on 18 October. She was briefly chased by USS Vincennes as she left the mouth of the river but quickly outdistanced her American pursuer. At the end of a six-week voyage in which many of the captives died, Wanderer arrived at Jekyll Island on 28 November and delivered her human cargo of four hundred slaves on Jekyll Island, Georgia.}

...Tammany was bought by [space in document is blank but possibly refers to Dr. Thomas Spalding Hopkins, though it my refer to a prior owner] and built himself a hut in which he lived apart from other negroes - children afraid of him."

Tamar - The sex of Tamar is not given in any document. In Black Names in America: Origins and Usage, (collected by Newbell Niles Puckett and edited by Murray Heller, Boston, G.K. Hall & Co. p.451), the name Tamar is identified as being a woman's name of African origin (Arabic). Tamar is listed in the 1847 marriage settlement of T.S. Hopkins and Jane Elizabeth Gignilliat as "aged about seventy /70/ years". This suggests that she was born around 1771. Tamar was owned by Miss Gignilliat prior to the marriage. Tamar was bequeathed to Jane Elizabeth Gignilliat by her brother, Scott Gignilliat of Glynn County, GA with the stipulation that she was not allowed to sell Tamar, but "shall only use and possess the right to dispose of the same by will." Tamar is one of three people bequeathed to Jane Elizabeth Gignilliat by her brother Scott with the stipulation that they never be sold. The other two were Asia, b. @ 1787 and Dan, probably b. @.1823. There is possibly some family relationship between these three people. Dan is certainly young enough to have been Tamar's son. She is probably the Tamah, valued at $350, listed in the 1823 division of the estate of James Gignilliat, cousin of Scott Gignilliat. She was listed in Lot #4 of people who were bequeathed to the children of John Gignilliat, Sr. The other two names that appear in Lot #4 are Primus ($300) and Joe ($350).

Dr.Thomas Spalding Hopkins served as Mayor of Thomasville, Georgia 1874-1876."

During the Indian War 1838-39 he was surgeon to the State Militia. During the Mexican War he was assistant surgeon to the 9th U.S.Infantry. During the Civil War he was Captain of the "Wayne Rangers" and Co. "G", 24 Georgia Cavalry Regiment. He was assigned by the Confederate Goverment as

Assistant Surgeon at the infamous Andersonville Prison in Sumter County until the close of the war.

Dr. Hopkins attained eminence, not only locally, but statewide and national as a physician and as a writer of medical and scientific treatises.

The Plantation known asSherwood, the home of Dr. Thomas Spalding Hopkins; from which he removed his family to Thomasville, Georgia, was rebuilt from three stories and nine fireplaces to two stories and five fireplaces in 1928.(Now called "Gibson Farm").The house is located about one and half miles from Waynesville, Georgia on the Browntown road. The home in Waynesville still stands underneath one of the renowned Council Oaks. It was underneath these oaks that the Indians held council meetings. There are only a few of these trees in Georgia. John Gignialliant is believed to be the original settler of Sherwood Homes,

The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, also known as the Freedmens Bureau

was established in the War Department by an act of Congress on March 3, 1865. The Bureau was responsible for the supervision and management of all matters relating to refugees and freedmen, during the Civil War. Its mission was to provide relief and help freedmen become self-sufficient. Bureau officials issued rations and clothing, operated hospitals and refugee camps, and supervised labor contracts. In addition, the Bureau managed apprenticeship disputes and complaints, assisted benevolent societies in the establishment of schools, helped freedmen in legalizing marriages entered into during slavery, and provided transportation to refugees and freedmen who were attempting to reunite with their families or relocate to other parts of the country. The Bureau also helped black soldiers, sailors, and their heirs collect bounty claims, pensions, and back pay.

General Davis Tillson took over as Assistant Commissioner for the Freedmens Bureau in Georgia. September 1865, Tillson found the labor system in Georgia in disarray. Able-bodied freedmen were being paid from $2 to $7 per month. On December 22, 1865, Tillson issued wage guidelines, that under the new rules, along the coast and southwestern Georgia, where good crops could be raised, men were to be paid $15 per month, including board and lodging, and women $10 per month.

Many were of the notion that the Federal Government was planning to distribute land to them at Christmas or New Years (40 ACRES AND A MULE??) and thus large numbers of freedmen were refusing to sign labor contracts.

General Tillson issued an order on October 3, 1865, prohibiting the distribution of rations to freedmen and refugees who were able-bodied but refused work. Tillson further ordered that only those persons who were able to provide for themselves would be allowed to remain in the towns and cities.

Sherman's Field Order # 15

On January 16, 1865, Union general William T. Sherman issued his Special Field Order No. 15, which confiscated as Federal property a strip of coastline stretching from Charleston, South Carolina, to the St. John's River in Florida, including Georgia's Sea Islands and the mainland thirty miles in from the coast.

The order redistributed the roughly 400,000 acres of land to newly freed black families in forty-acre segments.

On January 12 Sherman and Stanton met with twenty black leaders of the Savannah community, mostly Baptist and Methodist ministers, to discuss the question of emancipation. Lincoln approved Field Order No. 15 before Sherman issued it just four days after meeting with the black leaders.

In a later order, Sherman also authorized the army to loan mules to the newly settled farmers.

The order explicitly called for the settlement of black families on confiscated land, encouraged freedmen to join the Union army to help sustain their newly won liberty, and designated a general officer to act as inspector of settlements. Inspector General Rufus Saxton would police the land and work to ensure legal title of the property for the black settlers.

Despite the objections of General Oliver O. Howard, the Freedmen's Bureau chief, U.S. president Andrew Johnson overturned Sherman's directive in the fall of 1865, after the war had ended, and returned the land along the South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida coasts to the planters who had originally owned it.

The order is also the likely origin of the phrase "forty acres and a mule," which spread throughout the South in the weeks and months following Sherman's march.

1867 Voting Registration and Loyalty Oaths

The 1867 Voter Registration qualified voters: Georgia Microfilm # 296-22, Vol. 36-p326. Record # 613 was for   Randall , dated Aug 6, 1867 for Thomas County.  The microfilm did have both white and black voters but the index book only lists white voters.

History:

The  1867 voter registration records were created as a direct result of a Reconstruction Act passed by the United States Congress on March 23, 1867 for the rebel States of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas;  The act required the commanding officer in each military district to hold, before September 1, 1867, a registration of all male citizens, 21 years and older, in each county who were also qualified to vote and who had taken the loyalty oath.

Each registrant visited the local registration office, took the oath, and was listed in the Voter Registration record.

The companion volumes to the voter registration records are the Loyalty Oaths. Individuals ineligible to register included Confederate veterans with a rank of major or above; any person who had previously taken an oath as a member of Congress, as an officer of the United States, as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, and who later engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or gave aid or comfort to the enemies thereof, and whose "disability" had not been removed by a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress.

The 1867 Voting Registration

Randal's Hopkins Aug 16, 1867 Voter Registration Record

The act  " provided for a more efficient government of the rebel States," and particularly to extend suffrage to the millions of freedmen across the south. All adult black and white males who had sworn an oath of loyalty to the United States were eligible to register to vote. Included is the person's name, race, length of residence in the state, county and precinct, the book and page where his oath is recorded, naturalization information, and reasons for rejecting some registrants. Arranged alphabetically by county, thereunder chronologically by date of registration.

Georgia registered eligible white and black voters, 95,214 and 93,457 respectively.

Randal's 1867 Loyalty Oath

Randal's 1867 Loyalty Oath

In order to regain their voting rights under the Reconstruction Acts of 1867, men who had borne arms against the United States or otherwise actively supported the Confederacy were required to swear an oath of loyalty to the government of the United States. The oaths contain the voter's name, county of residence, his oath swearing loyalty to the United States government, his voting precinct, and the voter registrar's name. Arranged alphabetically by county.

"I, __________, do solemnly swear, (or affirm), in the presence of Almighty God, that I am a citizen of the State of __________; that I have resided in said State for __________ months next preceding this day, and now reside in the county of __________, or the parish of __________, in said State, (as the case may be); that I am twenty-one years old; that I have not been disfranchised for participation in any rebellion or civil war against the United States, nor for felony committed against the laws of any State or of the United States; that I have never been a member of any State legislature, nor held any executive or judicial office in any State engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof; that I have never taken an oath as a member of Congress of the United States, or as any officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, and afterwards engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof; that I will faithfully support the Constitution and obey the laws of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, encourage others so to do: So help me God";

The Voter Registrations  list race, the Loyalty Oaths  doesn’t.

OUR AFRICAN HERITAGES

OUR AFRICAN HERITAGES

What is the ancestry of our lineage? DNA testing has allowed us to unlock the gateway to our African past.

The Maternal and Paternal DNA Test are based on cells swabbed from the inside of your cheek.

One test examines markers of DNA on the Y chromosome, which passes virtually unchanged from fathers to sons. We have the same markers of Y chromosomes as our father, his father, his father, etc. for hundreds of generations.

Another test uses mitochondrial DNA, which children of both sexes get from their mothers.

These tests cannot necessarily tell us the particular tribe with which we share genetic ancestry. However, they can tell us the present-day country of Africa with which our lineage shares genetic ancestry.

Certificate of Ancestry DNA sequence was 99.3% the same as sequences from Bubi people in Bioko Island and Kimbundu people of Angola

Dear Mr. Hopkins,

It is with pleasure that I report that our PatriClanTM analysis successfully identified your paternal genetic ancestry. The Y chromosome DNA that we determined from your sample shares ancestry with two groups: the Bubi people in Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) and the Kimbundu people in Angola. While these groups may differ socially and culturally, there are people within them who share a common genetic ancestry.

We studied polymorphisms (different forms of DNA) on the non-recombining portion of your Y chromosome (NRY). This segment of DNA is transmitted identically from father to son. A panel of nine genetic markers (also called polymorphisms) on the NRY was analyzed using standard Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methodology. The polymorphisms we examined consisted of the slowly evolving ALU insertion/deletion polymorphism; and 8 highly mutable microsatellites or short tandem repeats (STRs). Differences in chromosome markers correlate highly with the ethnic and geographic origin of the individual. When compared to Y chromosome markers in large databases such as our African Lineage Database (ALD), Y chromosomes collected from individuals like you could be interpreted as genealogies reflecting the paternal lineage history of the human species. Although the informative stretches of genetic information along the Y chromosome represents less than one percent of your entire genetic make-up, it has proven to be a powerful tool for identifying and defining paternal lineages.

This result means that you have inherited through your father a segment of DNA that was passed on consistently from father to son to you. This segment of DNA is presently found in Africa in Bioko Island and Angola. We have enclosed several materials that reflect the results of your analysis and that may help you to research your historical and cultural ancestry. There is a copy of your Y chromosome polymorphisms. We have also included a Certificate of Ancestry authenticating that your polymorphisms matched with the Bubi in Bioko Island and the Kimbundu in Angola. You can display it with pride among other important family documents. In addition, we have included a full color map that geographically depicts your ancestral region. Finally, we have included the African Ancestry Guide to West and Central Africa to help you learn more about the peoples and cultures in these countries.

Thank you for your support and interest in African Ancestry.

Sincerely,

Gina Paige,President

African Ancestry Comments on its Feature on 60 Minutes

We felt it important that 60 Minutes' viewers receive a more complete perspective on the value of genetic ancestry tracing. African Ancestry has spent the past four years using genetic technology to transform the way people view themselves and the way they view Africa. (Click the link above to view the story & video).

First, no other company has a resource comparable to our African Lineage DatabaseTM. Dr. Kittles spent over 10 years working with anthropologists, geneticists, archaeologists and historians to construct the most comprehensive database of African lineages in the world. Our database has over 25,000 samples affording us the ability to deliver a level of specificity in our results unmatched by our competition. Specifically, and unlike most other companies in this arena, our analysis accounts for frequency and likelihood of matches - allowing us to determine a present day country of ancestry. African Ancestry does not just give people a result based on a single data point.

Secondly, It is important to note that in some cases, African Ancestry is unable to trace genetic lineage to one particular ethnic group in a community in Africa but instead the result may be found among to several ethnic groups within a particular region. This is often dependent upon both the commonality of some lineages as well as the migrational histories of certain groups. We do not promise or claim otherwise.

Thirdly, having a personal connection to the continent has motivated thousands of African American families to travel to, build school and hospitals in, invest in, lobby on behalf of, study about, and feel an extremely strong sense of being from Africa.

Finally, over 50,000 people -- including celebrities and leaders such as Oprah Winfrey, Isaiah Washington, and Spike Lee - have reclaimed their roots, thanks to the groundbreaking research that African Ancestry tests provide.

The Mbundu people of Angola
(a.k.a. the Kimbundu
people)

• The Mbundu (Kimbundu) people have lived in northern Angola since the 1400's. The area was home to some of the continent’s richest kingdoms, which welcomed European merchants and missionaries in the 15th century, only to be corrupted and badly damaged by the transatlantic slave trade (Maafa).
• Africans from
Angola were among the first Africans brought to America in 1619 to Jamestown, Virginia. Many of those Africans were Mbundu1. Many Africans from Angola were started to be shipped to South Carolina in the later years, around the early 1700's. Researchers have estimated that over 30% of enslaved Africans imported into Charleston, South Carolina in the 18th century were brought from Angola.2
• The European conquest of Angola began when Portugal attacked the Mbundu kingdom of Ndongo in a military campaign lasting from 1618 to 1620. Although Mbundu rulers such as Queen Nzinga resisted, the Portuguese traders continued to ravage the area well into the late 1700's to acquire Africans for the transatlantic slave trade.
• Many Africans of the Mbundu kingdom were not only taken to
South Carolina, but many were taken to Brazil. Many people of African descent in Brazil are descendants of the Mbundu people.
• Today, many Mbundu people in
Angola earn their livelihoods in commercial farming in the capital city of Luanda, Angola.
• Mbundu society is strongly matrilineal - men consider themselves bound to their mothers' families, particularly their mothers' brothers, and inherit land along the maternal line. While many Mbundu are Catholic, most also practice their traditional spirituality, which places strong emphasis on ancestors.3

The Bubi People

Bioko Island, the Bubi people and the country of Equatorial Guinea was a former Spanish colony and gained their independence in 1968.

Formerly known as Fernando Po, the Island of Bioko was settled by the Bubi people in the 13th century. They came from the mainland. In 1472, the Portuguese ‘discovered’ the island and claimed it for Portugal. In 1778, the Portuguese surrendered the island to the Spanish, who ruled the island until Independence in 1968.

From 1827 to 1843 the British leased bases at Malabo (then called Port Clarence) and San Carlos from Spain for use by their antislavery patrols, and freed slaves were settled on Bioko (then called Fernando Po). Britain used the island as a base for the Navy’s anti-slavery patrols, in an effort to suppress the slave trade. Many enslaved Africans rescued from slaving ships were resettled on Bioko Island, these freed slaves became known as "Fernandinos"; their descendants still populate the island today .

Between 1451 and 1870, 12 million Africans were shipped into slavery. This process obliterated their ancestry, most of the slaves and their descendants lost knowledge of who they were, and from where they originally came.

PBS Video: Tracing Roots Back To Africa with Dr. Kittles

African American Lives PBS Video with Dr. Rick Kittles with Henry Louis Gates Jr,and Chris Tucker with the Chief of the Angolan village that shares his DNA

Dear Mr. Hopkins,

“Your DNA tests are very interesting to us, and we believe that the most likely ancestry would be Kimbundu.… The reasons that hits come up on places like Bioko that were hardly involved in the slave trade is because they were settled, probably around 1000 BC by people who formed a part of the Bantu migration, a movement of people from west Africa (Cameroon) following the coast and major rivers to central Africa.  Some of those people settled on Bioko.  So you are almost certainly related to the person on Bioko, but your common ancestor with him, probably lived 10,000 years ago or more.

This is why we think the Kimbundu hit is the most likely, since the Kimbundu are a part of the same stream that settled Bioko, only later (c. 800 BC).  IN any case, many thousands of people were enslaved in that area, and many were taken to North America.  We might add one more twist.  While most people who have central African ancestry in the Carolinas came in the large group of imports brought in the second through fourth decades of the eighteenth century or the last few years of the eighteenth and the opening years of the nineteenth century, your ancestor may well have come to Virginia or the Chesapeake among the very first Africans to arrive in the Americas.  In our interview with the Washington Post we mentioned this group who came between 1619 and about 1650.  We say this because you have the African link in your paternal line.  If your genealogy were to show that you have links to the Chesapeake and if your family had been free for a long time, this would be more certain.

Many of the first Africans to come to America became free and many married European women, thus ensuring that their descendents were free.  Some have become Melungeons in Tennessee, and other are Lumbees in North Carolina, others don’t have such an identity….”
