This is a list of 169 slaves from General Francis Hopkins 1827 Estate. The Randal Hopkins family received a copy from The National Archives Atlanta Regional Archives Branch.

This is a lawsuit regarding (General Francis Hopkins) who died in 1821. The case was resolved in 1827. Case summary: All of the slaves were given back to the heirs of Gen. Francis Hopkins including Dr. Thomas Spalding Hopkins

Our ancestor Randal Hopkins was born about 1829. This list would include his father, mother, brothers and sisters.

Lands included in this inventory were Bellville, Johnsons, Swamp, Mullberry, Pine [illegible],
Island Lands, Demoscas Tract, and Point or Montallet.

1867 Voting Registration and Loyalty Oaths

The 1867 Voter Registration qualified voters: Georgia Microfilm # 296-22, Vol. 36-p326. Record # 613 was for � Randall , dated Aug 6, 1867 for Thomas County.� The microfilm did have both white and black voters but the index book only lists white voters.

History:

The� 1867 voter registration records were created as a direct result of a Reconstruction Act passed by the United States Congress on March 23, 1867 for the rebel States of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas; �The act required the commanding officer in each military district to hold, before September 1, 1867, a registration of all male citizens, 21 years and older, in each county who were also qualified to vote and who had taken the loyalty oath.

Each registrant visited the local registration office, took the oath, and was listed in the Voter Registration record.

The companion volumes to the voter registration records are the Loyalty Oaths. Individuals ineligible to register included Confederate veterans with a rank of major or above; any person who had previously taken an oath as a member of Congress, as an officer of the United States, as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, and who later engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or gave aid or comfort to the enemies thereof, and whose "disability" had not been removed by a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress.

The act �" provided for a more efficient government of the rebel States," and particularly to extend suffrage to the millions of freedmen across the south. All adult black and white males who had sworn an oath of loyalty to the United States were eligible to register to vote. Included is the person's name, race, length of residence in the state, county and precinct, the book and page where his oath is recorded, naturalization information, and reasons for rejecting some registrants. Arranged alphabetically by county, thereunder chronologically by date of registration.

�Georgia registered eligible white and black voters, 95,214 and 93,457 respectively.

Randal's 1867 Loyalty Oath

In order to regain their voting rights under the Reconstruction Acts of 1867, men who had borne arms against the United States or otherwise actively supported the Confederacy were required to swear an oath of loyalty to the government of the United States. The oaths contain the voter's name, county of residence, his oath swearing loyalty to the United States government, his voting precinct, and the voter registrar's name. Arranged alphabetically by county.

"I, __________, do solemnly swear, (or affirm), in the presence of Almighty God, that I am a citizen of the State of __________; that I have resided in said State for __________ months next preceding this day, and now reside in the county of __________, or the parish of __________, in said State, (as the case may be); that I am twenty-one years old; that I have not been disfranchised for participation in any rebellion or civil war against the United States, nor for felony committed against the laws of any State or of the United States; that I have never been a member of any State legislature, nor held any executive or judicial office in any State engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof; that I have never taken an oath as a member of Congress of the United States, or as any officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, and afterwards engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof; that I will faithfully support the Constitution and obey the laws of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, encourage others so to do: So help me God";

What is the ancestry of our lineage? DNA testing has allowed us to unlock the gateway to our African past.
The Maternal and Paternal DNA Test are based on cells swabbed from the inside of your cheek.
One test examines markers of DNA on the Y chromosome, which passes virtually unchanged from fathers to sons. We have the same markers of Y chromosomes as our father, his father, his father, etc. for hundreds of generations.
Another test uses mitochondrial DNA, which children of both sexes get from their mothers.
These tests cannot necessarily tell us the particular tribe with which we share genetic ancestry. However, they can tell us the present-day country of Africa with which our lineage shares genetic ancestry.

Dear Mr. Hopkins,
It is with pleasure that I report that our PatriClanTM analysis successfully identified your paternal genetic ancestry. The Y chromosome DNA that we determined from your sample shares ancestry with two groups: the Bubi people in Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) and the Kimbundu people in Angola. While these groups may differ socially and culturally, there are people within them who share a common genetic ancestry.
We studied polymorphisms (different forms of DNA) on the non-recombining portion of your Y chromosome (NRY). This segment of DNA is transmitted identically from father to son. A panel of nine genetic markers (also called polymorphisms) on the NRY was analyzed using standard Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methodology. The polymorphisms we examined consisted of the slowly evolving ALU insertion/deletion polymorphism; and 8 highly mutable microsatellites or short tandem repeats (STRs). Differences in chromosome markers correlate highly with the ethnic and geographic origin of the individual. When compared to Y chromosome markers in large databases such as our African Lineage Database (ALD), Y chromosomes collected from individuals like you could be interpreted as genealogies reflecting the paternal lineage history of the human species. Although the informative stretches of genetic information along the Y chromosome represents less than one percent of your entire genetic make-up, it has proven to be a powerful tool for identifying and defining paternal lineages.
This result means that you have inherited through your father a segment of DNA that was passed on consistently from father to son to you. This segment of DNA is presently found in Africa in Bioko Island and Angola. We have enclosed several materials that reflect the results of your analysis and that may help you to research your historical and cultural ancestry. There is a copy of your Y chromosome polymorphisms. We have also included a Certificate of Ancestry authenticating that your polymorphisms matched with the Bubi in Bioko Island and the Kimbundu in Angola. You can display it with pride among other important family documents. In addition, we have included a full color map that geographically depicts your ancestral region. Finally, we have included the African Ancestry Guide to West and Central Africa to help you learn more about the peoples and cultures in these countries.

The Mbundu people of Angola
(a.k.a. the Kimbundu people)
� The Mbundu (Kimbundu) people have lived in northern Angola since the 1400's. The area was home to some of the continent�s richest kingdoms, which welcomed European merchants and missionaries in the 15th century, only to be corrupted and badly damaged by the transatlantic slave trade (Maafa).
� Africans from Angola were among the first Africans brought to America in 1619 to Jamestown, Virginia. Many of those Africans were Mbundu¹. Many Africans from Angola were started to be shipped to South Carolina in the later years, around the early 1700's. Researchers have estimated that over 30% of enslaved Africans imported into Charleston, South Carolina in the 18th century were brought from Angola.²
� The European conquest of Angola began when Portugal attacked the Mbundu kingdom of Ndongo in a military campaign lasting from 1618 to 1620. Although Mbundu rulers such as Queen Nzinga resisted, the Portuguese traders continued to ravage the area well into the late 1700's to acquire Africans for the transatlantic slave trade.
� Many Africans of the Mbundu kingdom were not only taken to South Carolina, but many were taken to Brazil. Many people of African descent in Brazil are descendants of the Mbundu people.
� Today, many Mbundu people in Angola earn their livelihoods in commercial farming in the capital city of Luanda, Angola.
� Mbundu society is strongly matrilineal - men consider themselves bound to their mothers' families, particularly their mothers' brothers, and inherit land along the maternal line. While many Mbundu are Catholic, most also practice their traditional spirituality, which places strong emphasis on ancestors.³

The Bubi People
Bioko Island, the Bubi people and the country of Equatorial Guinea was a former Spanish colony and gained their independence in 1968.
Formerly known as Fernando Po, the Island of Bioko was settled by the Bubi people in the 13th century. They came from the mainland. In 1472, the Portuguese �discovered� the island and claimed it for Portugal. In 1778, the Portuguese surrendered the island to the Spanish, who ruled the island until Independence in 1968.
From 1827 to 1843 the British leased bases at Malabo (then called Port Clarence) and San Carlos from Spain for use by their antislavery patrols, and freed slaves were settled on Bioko (then called Fernando Po). Britain used the island as a base for the Navy�s anti-slavery patrols, in an effort to suppress the slave trade. Many enslaved Africans rescued from slaving ships were resettled on Bioko Island,these freed slaves became known as "Fernandinos"; their descendants still populate the island today .
Between 1451 and 1870, 12 million Africans were shipped into slavery. This process obliterated their ancestry, most of the slaves and their descendants lost knowledge of who they were, and from where they originally came.

�Your DNA tests are very interesting to us, and we believe that the most likely ancestry would be Kimbundu.� The reasons that hits come up on places like Bioko that were hardly involved in the slave trade is because they were settled, probably around 1000 BC by people who formed a part of the Bantu migration, a movement of people from west Africa (Cameroon) following the coast and major rivers to central Africa.� Some of those people settled on Bioko.� So you are almost certainly related to the person on Bioko, but your common ancestor with him, probably lived 10,000 years ago or more.�
This is why we think the Kimbundu hit is the most likely, since the Kimbundu are a part of the same stream that settled Bioko, only later (c. 800 BC).� IN any case, many thousands of people were enslaved in that area, and many were taken to North America.� We might add one more twist.� While most people who have central African ancestry in the Carolinas came in the large group of imports brought in the second through fourth decades of the eighteenth century or the last few years of the eighteenth and the opening years of the nineteenth century, your ancestor may well have come to Virginia or the Chesapeake among the very first Africans to arrive in the Americas.� In our interview with the Washington Post we mentioned this group who came between 1619 and about 1650.� We say this because you have the African link in your paternal line.� If your genealogy were to show that you have links to the Chesapeake and if your family had been free for a long time, this would be more certain.�
Many of the first Africans to come to America became free and many married European women, thus ensuring that their descendents were free.� Some have become Melungeons in Tennessee, and other are Lumbees in North Carolina, others don�t have such an identity�.�

The first public slave auction of 23 individuals was held in Jamestown in 1638. The unit of the slave trade was the "peca", one male slave in peak condition (the equivalent of two women and a baby!).

2 T. Hopkins was born <1869> in Thomasville,Georgia

3 Lula Hopkins was born <1871> in Thomasville,Georgia�she married Alex Cromatie on�Dec. 12, 1889. After his death�she married Solomon Junior on Dec. 3, 1904. Lula died on July 12, 1924. She is buried in Springhill M.B. Church Cementary

4 Gilbert Hopkins was born <12/25/1874> in Thomasville, Georgia� he married Mary Jane James on Jan. 7,� 1900
